I know we've been talking about SOTW and MOH and such...

On one of the threads someone mentioned a multi-leveled US History curriculum....(actual curric...not just Charlotte Mason or Classical, I think).

Could you please refresh my old brain?

Still considering doing US History and comboing with Around the World in 180 Days - just stretching the latter over 2 or 3 years...so it's all covered by some point in time.

    THANKS!

I'd like to know what that one is, too.

It's not only history - but what about KONOS? I'm planning on starting with their program in the fall. I'm definately not an expert, but I know that they have a unit study format for grades K-8.

We're doing "All American History Vol. 1" this year, and plan on doing vol. 2 next year. I'm doing all three kids at once. It's OK, but a bit more "textbooky" than I like, much more than I'm use to with MOH!

Thanks Jackie. I found one of them in the thread...now I can't remember what it was called!

All American History - isn't that the same publisher as MOH???

I was thinking for my 4th grader (she will be next year) I could do a "Child's Story of America" and let my 2nd grader do "History for Little Pilgrims" and find areas where they overlap. Thoughts/ Anyone heard of them?

Thanks for the KONOS recommendation. I've looked at it a bit. It's a lot like Sonlight, and I know that that approach would really squelch my kids natural desire to read. Anything that's made a "have to" becomes a "don't want to" so...I'd rather help them find library books that go along with what we're reading that they get to read for "fun" on their own time. Does that make sense. I'm sad, because both KONOS and Sonlight were how I thought I would teach when I first started homeschooling. I just know my kids and thier style, and that ain't it! (pardon the coloquialism BAD SPELLING TOO!!!)

I've found it difficult to use more than one and overlapping. I tried to do it with I think "Beautiful Feet" Primary and Intermediate together, and it REALLY didn't work for me! I also have a copy of "A Child's Story of America" (garage sale for $4!) and I am using it a little, in addition to All American History. I'm planning on reading the chapter on Jonathon Edwards and the Great Awakening on Monday. I also have another Abeka workbook (The American People and Nation...another $1 garage sale purchase!) that I've had Phillip do a little in.

Yes, All-American History is published by Bright Ideas Press, same as MOH.

Glad I'm not the only one. I got SL Core 3 for my girls and it just is NOT a good fit for the younger one. My oldest likes it but it's almost impossible for me to be consistent with her in using it. Yes, she can do it by herself but gleans so much more if we do more of it together than independently. She's done well and we've added a VA history worktext and that has stretched it out....but we're still not making it work as well as I thought it would.

She has read lots of other historical fiction this year so she's gotten plenty of history...just not early Am. Hist. as planned (not that it's a bad thing.....just not the plan, kwim?)

I knew we were not a KONOS family but really hoped we could Sonlight a bit better. My middle daughter is just a textbook sort of kid when it comes to history. She wants just the basic facts (she doesn't like history at this point).

That's why I can't decide what we'll do after Core 3...move onto Core 4 for the oldest or try something different. I think I'll check out what you're using Jackie. I've heard of MOH but not All American History.

Do you have Vol 2 yet? I can't find it available on their website or anyone else's but the info sheet said it would be available about Nov 2007....guessing its been delayed?

SL Core 3 goes thru about 1850 so Vol 2 would be about right for my oldest (who will be in 5th next year).....might be able to use Vol 2 and add some of the SL readers from Core 4......hmmm.....gonna have to ponder and wait and see

Oh, no!!! I want All-American Vol 2 next year (Freshman), Notgrass World (Sophmore), Notgrass U.S. (Junior), and a half year of Notgrass Government (Senior). If All-American isn't out, that will really mess it up!!!

Don't stress yet....I'm sure they'll have it out by next year (if they originally posted avail. Nov 2007). Surely they aren't a full year behind.

Vol 1 says 5-8th grade.....do you think it's (VOl1 or 2)too hard for a 5th grader? My oldest would be using Vol 2 starting sometime during 5th grade....whenever we finish SL Core 3. She loves history and historical fiction and reads above grade level.

    Decisions, decisions......gotta love them!

I think it would be fine for a 5th grader, but the text reading is a bit dry. I usually read the text book out loud to all three kids, and we do the Activity Pages together. I REALLY supplement with a lot of literature. I usually have one historical fiction I'm reading aloud to them (if not two!), plus they all are given an "required reading" book to read on their own, usually having to do with history, too.

Good. I was bit nervous there for a minute. I think if we do go with Vol 2, I'd probably add some of the Sonlight readers, etc. She does fine with "dry" as long as we can then spice it up with other books, field trips, etc.

Ummmm, right off the bat that's all I saw. But don't you think Phillip would like those? I dunno. I'm thinking my dd might like it as we do those things in History. I haven't taken that plunge yet, though.

Yes, he would. But I'm thinking of NEXT year, and we'll be past that. We'll be starting the Revolution any time now.

Jackie - yeah, it looks like only those three...but if you investigate the site a little, they have a lot of timeline stuff, too.

COOL JACKIE!!! Thanks for the update!

ETA: Jackie, get off the phone with them!!! Every time I try to call it's busy! ;) No way to do it online? I looked but didn't see anything, so probably not yet.

That blog site has a supposed link to Bright Ideas Press, but it won't go through.

I'm not having much luck! :(

Another ETA: I GOT THROUGH! So I'll be receiving the first two pieces soon, and the TG when it comes out. She said in a month or so... YAY! :D
