I don't often watch SNL, mostly because a) it's not funny and b) it's crass, but DH had it on last night. The part where the two actors do the news bit was actually kind of funny, until they started talking about the HS ruling in Cali. They recapped what happened by saying that HSing parents were upset by the idea that their children had to be taught by a credentialed teacher. Then they supposedly quoted one homeschooling parent as saying, and I quote, "This is just like what the Nazis did to the Pilgrims in 1876". *sigh* At what point will the general public accept the fact that on average (just averages, mind you) HSers score higher in every subject than those kids who are taught by credentialed teachers? And I'd be willing to bet that HSing parents, by default, would also score higher on average. If for no other reason than because we are relearning all this stuff again, too.
I love SNL but missed it last night. I don't take anything on that show seriously at all. I would have probably laughed myself off the couch. What really bothers me is when other types of shows that are meant to be serious come down hard on and say stupid things about hsing.
That statement is so typical of the stuff they put out. I normally don't watch because on top not being funny and being crass, they are filthy most weeks.
SNL is not my thing. I've never thought it was funny. My dh says the old ones were, but he doesn't like the new ones either.
Thank you! We used to watch Jay Leno but quit watching it when they had the writers strike. They said that he wasn't going to be on because the writers who wrote his jokes were on strike. We thought he was a comedian!
He does write some of his own jokes, but he was also not allowed to do so because he is also in the Writer's Union.
The old SNL stuff is priceless ... I don't watch the new SNL so I can't comment, there is always so much else to do ...
Another old-school SNL fan here. I haven't watched the show in ages. Heaven knows that HS'ers don't need any more jokes and jabs, but I actually thought that Nazi/Pilgrims line was pretty funny. What's even funnier (or sadder) to me is to imagine how many public-schooled people heard it and didn't get the joke because they never learned anything substantial about history.
I had to giggle out loud a little when I read this. Yes, it is sad because there are probably many of them.
I always thought the SNL of the 70's was the funniest, but that was probably due to the contact high I got from the "So-called" grown ups around me who were smokin everything but the sheets.... But as a grown up, I never liked it.
I have to agree with the old SNL comments. It hasn't really been funny since the days of Dan Akroid and all those guys. Although the happy fun ball commercial, and Adam Sandler's "Redhooded Sweatshirt" song were priceless. "Deep Thought's", with Jack handy, and some of the news lines were my fav. Things like..."and now a look back" (the anchor then takes a look behind him) Funny stuff! Almost as good as Calvin and Hobbes, or the farside!
Ok...I am a bit confused...I thought Ca's governor overturned the ruling? So, the ruling went through anyway??? That is scarey. Looks like I need to get a teaching certificate before this kind of stuff comes to Ohio.
This reminds me of some years back when a department store (Sears or Penney's maybe????) got some heat for selling a t-shirt that had a cartoon drawing of a camper on it with the caption "I'm home-skooled". Consider the number of homeschoolers who perform well, if not win, spelling bees!
