Another woman in my homeschool group passed this video along from CBS: http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/i_video/main500251.shtml?id=3917028n
Great video! Thanks for sharing that positive reflection of home schooling with us. Has anyone heard of the Thomas Jefferson Method they mentioned?
how neat. I was wonder about that method. I have never heard of it. Also the whole 3rd grade in a month, wow, I am so behind then. LOL
I just googled that method and they say it is also called the "Leadership method". Never heard of that either.
I suspected it was just a way of saying 'classical' method, and that's apparently basically what it is: http://www.modelmommy.com/ThomasJeffersonMethod.htm It appears to be much, if not exactly, like the classical method--- uses classical works and emphasizes critical thinking/analysis.
It's funny that you mentioned that. While we can go through some things quickly and others take longer, did her DD REALLY grasp everything in less than a month? I find it hard to believe that she thoroughly covered all of third grade. I still thought the piece was overall positive.
Yeah, I wondered about that, too. The only thing I could think of was that possibly her daughter was already ahead in most areas. So, when compared to the requirements of a 3rd grade curriculum in a public school, she may only have needed a month to catch whatever she had been lacking. I'm thinking that statement might have been clarified if we knew what kinds of homeschooling requirements that woman must fill in her state. If she had to submit stuff that proves her daughter's on track for 3rd grade, her daughter may have been so far ahead that she only had a month's worth of work to do. So, I'm a bit curious as to what was going on with that particular claim as well.
The girl may have already been ahead. Even so, I have noticed that the first few grades of elementary school are so repetative that one can cover quite a bit in a short amount of time. I have toyed with the idea of getting my son who is in 2nd grade, up to 5th grade to match my dd for next year. He has aready completed 3rd grade...so if I work on him I can get 4th done also. LOL. I won't actually do that but I had thought about it. LOL. Thanks for the video! Always nice to see something positive.
Great video!! Thank You for posting that. There is a book called A Thomas Jefferson Education by Dr. Oliver Van DeMille. I began reading it a couple of months ago, but had to return it to the library before I was done. I am going to get it out again and finishing reading it. The book intrigued me because I have 3 boys and the whole leadership concept and boys totally mix IMO. We have been following a Classical Education, but the leadership aspect sounded really interesting. Thanks for sharing this video!
