Teacher Arrested for Forcing Child to Unclog Toilet with Hands

    Posted: May 13, 2008 04:38 PM CDT

A teacher is facing charges tonight and a family is outraged, after a young boy says his teacher made him unclog a toilet with his bare hands.

It happened at an elementary school in Saint Gabriel, which is in Iberville Parish.

Seven year old Trevor Williams says he went to a restroom and clogged it up with too much tissue paper.

An affidavit says Trevors Teacher Julie Landry forced the child to use his hands to unclog the toilet containing human waste.

The child's mother says the student did it because he says his teacher made him.

Police have arrested the teacher, 46 year old Julie Landry and charged her with cruelty to a juvenile.

The Iberville school district says Landry will likely be suspended with pay until the investigation is completed.

And to make matters worse, the child's parents say the other students have been making fun of him, calling him nicknames because of the incident.

And this woman is an "expert" in teaching little children. I mean she has a degree and a credential and hours of extra training and this is the best she could do????? Thankfully, I was not the parent of this child or there may have been an even bigger headline.

I hear you, Cheryl!!! So much for credentials! They obviously do not take the place of common sense!

    That's nasty. Poor kid.

Though...did the child do it on purpose?
Did he put all that paper in their just to cause trouble? (not really go to the bathroom)
She then could have taken him to the office and let the principal decide what punishment should be delt.

It doesn't matter if he did it on purpose or not, if there was waste in the toilet he never should have been sticking his hands in there. You are correct in that the principal should have been the one to assign punishment.

I'm sure the teacher is flushed now while the authorities decide her fate. (sorry couldn't resist )

I agree! Even if it was deliberate, the teacher was still in the wrong.

I reiterate what's already been said on this: After 4+ years of college learning how to properly deal with children, that was the best she could come up with???!!! She's the "expert"????!!! And we're the crazy ones who are harming our children by not sending them off to such "experts"???!!!

    *sigh*

I know this is a case of "one bad apple" and all, but if there are going to be any bad apples in my child's educational life, they are going to be DH or myself. When I stand before the Lord, I don't want to have to answer to Him for what I allowed other people to do to my child, only what I personally did. Does that makes sense?

Yes, Amie, that makes absolute sense!

Poor unsocialized homeschoolers that don't have credentialed teacher's teaching them----how will our kids EVER survive in the "real" world?!

    How sick! That poor child.

I also agree that it makes no difference if the kid did it on purpose or not. However, I have an 8 year old son and I doubt it was on purpose...they just use a ton of toilet paper sometimes. lol.

The whole things makes me sick because I know my son would have obeyed the teacher. My dd would have also. We teach our kids to respect and obey teachers and then something like this happens. I am just glad the kid went home and told his parents. Wonder what things go on that never get reported. I knew of a little girl how had a potty accident in K, and the teacher made her clean it up herself. What is wrong with people?

I wonder what the whole story is though. Has the teacher told her side of the story? Too many parents take every single word their child says as gospel. If she did in deed "make" him, then yeah that is over the top. But, I wonder what the whole truth is in the story. I'm hesitant to believe everything until the teacher explains her side...not that I'm condoning her behavior, but I'm hesitant to believe every word out of a 7 year olds mouth...especially if he has a history of causing trouble.

Gotta say, I'm with you on that one!

I mean, if MY kid, in MY home put a ton of toilet paper in the toilet and flushed it and clogged it (for fun not if he/she did it with urine or feces in it) I would make them clean it out and clean it up.

Again NOT if there were excrement in the bowl - but if htey were just sitting there stuffing toilet paper in the toilet!!!

There are two sides to every story...and often only one is told.

My second grade son is in public school. I signed the "You May Spank My Child if Need Be" form. There are easily 3-4 boys in his classroom that would do such a deed. Each of us should realize that ps teachers have minimal control, many parents will not give consent to the spanking form..........and 9/10 of those kids need to be on that list! Those kids know that nothing will happen to them, they have 0 respect. I would venture to say that the teacher in question has seen and endured the antics/disbehavior/rudeness of this child for many months now. I believe that digging out the potty is just what he needed.....well, a spanking to go along with it also! Parents need to open their brains and stop being so STUPID AND LAZY AND DISIPLINE THEIR CHILDREN! They weren't given to us to ruin.

ps, for those of you read to eat my lunch.....there is a huge difference between discipline and punishment!

I'm in agreement that there is probably more to the story and that this kid has behavior issues BUT no matter what he had done in the past that does not mean he should clean out a crap filled toilet with his hands! Even if this kid is the worst, most trouble making kid in the school that teacher still should have known better than to have him clean out a toilet like that. Also I would never ever give a school permission to spank my child. Never.

I agree with you, Tiffany. I am also assuming that since she was arrested, there is probably some truth in this boys story. Yes, there are times when innocent victims are arrested, but not very often. Usually they are guilty or have enough evidence against them to warrant an arrest. Regardless, to have the boy unplug the toilet with his hands is wrong. Imagine how many people use that toilet and the diseases that spread through fecal matter. YIKES!
...and I wouldn't allow the school to spank my child. I do not trust them to educate my child, why would I allow them to physically punish them. Especially since they have to touch my child's rear in order to do it.
