you might want to head to spokeo.com. They are an information aggregate site and they have a LOT of personal information on there that anyone can search about you.

Go to their site, search for your name, and then scroll to the bottom of the page and click on 'privacy.' It's in very tiny light letters at the bottom right.

From there, you can opt out of being searched.

I had to clear myself, my husband, and my mom [who doesn't even OWN a computer!]. The information they'd collected and had for anyone anywhere to freely search was disturbing.

    Interesting!

Thankfully most of the information they have about us is wrong. LOL

    Thanks for the heads up!

Yes, mine was a half and half mix of accurate and just plain wrong. Unfortunately, they had just enough right that I had to remove me, my husband, and my mom.

I would recommend using a junk hotmail account to do it, though. I suspect that, since the info is spotty, they're just trying to get email addies to sell to spammers.

They said our house was worth over $1,000,000!!! LOL!!! It's a typical two-story, four bedroom house with a garage, 1.5 baths, unfinished basement. It also had Carl listed twice, once here and once at his mother's. All three are gone now!

The thing with this site, is it gets it's info (however inaccurate) from other sites. Your info is still out there, still findable if someone wants to look hard enough. There is NO such thing as privacy in this computer age.

And EVERYONE'S house is worth a million bucks according to that site, guess someone forgot to tell the about the real estate market situation right now! LOL What you paid for your house is public record though, so I think it's funny they never get that fact right.

I'm having trouble opting out too, it doesn't ask for a fee, but the same window keeps popping up, the one where you type in your URL, email address and the security code.

It wouldn't let me opt out either. Lots of my info was wrong, too. There are about 5 more sites like it, but all are full of inaccuracies. It's still scary though.

I got it to work, scrolled down it said to check email for a link. It still shows up on the search, but then when you check on your name it doesn't open.

I wonder if it isnt just a way to gather information like email addys from people. I typed in dh's name, my name and family members names and all the information was the same for all of us. Seems kinda hoakie to me!

Yes, this is most likely a way for them to gain e-mail addresses. That's why I recommended earlier in the thread to use a hotmail account or some other account you can just have junk go to.

Snopes.com recommended opting out of the search, though. And since they had about half the info on us correct, I felt like I needed to. If pretty much all the info were wrong, I'd probably not have bothered.

Some people have found the information virtually all correct. So, it's really just something people need to look at and then decide for themselves what they want to do about it.

The part that bothered me most about this site is that they post our address along with information about our children. My mom even lists all of her grandchildren (and my mom is SUPER private and even refuses to use her real name online... never has... nor does she use her grandkids' real names. she had nicknames for all of them).

The funny thing is they said my house was worth only $30,000. But DH's house is worth over a million. SAME dang house. lol.

That's because you haven't discovered the secret passage way that leads to the REST of the house underground. That's where he keeps his harem!

I just found out that my dh is African-American. Funny, he loks pretty white to me. LOL! I did get both of our names removed. Dh's gandmother's house is listed as $1M+. It is a two BR/1 BA, depression-era home with very few upgrades over the years.

My BIL has a name that can be girl or boy. He is listed as the female head of household!

What I couldn't figure out was how my house is worth over a million but we live in a below average neighborhood. :)
