Hmmm....reminds me of my jr. high algebra class. My teacher had 'God's laws' posted all over the room and then he tried to tell us the Holocaust didn't really happen.

Sometimes there is more to the story.

I say do these ( and other posters that were mentioned that didn't pertain to Christian faith) really NEED to be in the class room in the first place?
I think it was a personal statement by the teacher ,did it really need to be in big letters and a couple feet tall and wide?
But if you allow one type of poster to be up then you should allow others that differ from that. IMHO all posters should be gone from classrooms. I hated them, but again thats IMHO.

But, as to anything that pertains to historical writings or the pledge of allegiance...should be, is my thinking.

That is why I said NO to ALL posters, you are not going to able to please everyone and like I said it wasn't a small poster or all the words to the pleadge just the ones including God (again a statement made by the teacher).
Did the statements need to be made that these "people were made from the Creator" on the wall of famous people or could it have said something else and still get the point across ?
I don't have a problem with the pledge on the wall..it is the pledge after all, BUT to have only a few words from it , in capital boldfaced letters..thats a different story and that is a statement being made.

 

I understand what you are saying and I pretty much feel the same way every Christmas. Our town had a neon nativity scene created by a well-known artist that was thought to be on church property, but actually was on city property AND the city had paid for it. Well, people went crazy, it was national news, law suits were threaten, pagans and atheists found it offensive...on and on it went until Christmas was over. Every year people get more nick-picky about anything remotely Christian in Christmas; all the pagan stuff is okay though. It just got the point that I think no city should be putting up any decorations at Christmas time. Let the individual businesses decorate according to their conscious, but not the city itself. It would alleviate all the problems...but no, the people making the big fuss wanted the secular only decorations to remain...even though I (and other Christians) find that just as offensive, but who cares what the Christians think?

Yeah, the teacher was making a statement in quoting portions of historical government documents. I suppose the next thing is to remove them from the documents entirely so that people will never have to see them in any context. They practically don't teach government as it is, so most kids would not know the difference.

 

I have a theory on things like this..and basically it goes like this "when it comes to seperation of church and state it only applies if the church in question is Christianity, other religious groups can do as they please, as can other social groups, but Christians oh no they need to be held in check" Personally I think it's offensive, but at the same time I also choose to take it as a compliment. I mean obviously they feel more threatened by Me as a Christian than they do an atheist, or pagan, or even a gay or lesbian group. So as far as I'm concerned I must be doing something right that Government is so threatened by me, and I will by the Grace of God continue to do what I do.

Oh good grief..... Seriously....I think people need to do something else with their time. The state is now PAYING more money to fight this in a higher court.....

We have a similar fight in the county for the holiday display on the county court lawn..... every religion is actually respected that has a civilian so it during the holiday (large menorah, christmas tress, and whatever else there is).....it's been going on for 30+ years and yet someone just now complained.... <sigh> and the county/town isn't even paying for it!

 

I think it's funny that the McDonald's owners in town all put a VERY large nativity displace on their properties every year. They are cool, because they are themed for different countries/cultures. (I.e. there is one from Congo that has very dark-skinned characters wearing garb that is a cross between traditional Hebrew and afrikan). Since there is a McDonald's on just about every major corner, there is a nativity on just about every major corner. And no one can complain because they are private

There is a town close by, called Republic. Their city seal is an oval with four quadrants. They each have a symbol in them that is someone tied to the city. One of the quadrants used to have an icthus in it. A wiccan lady, who had already bought a home in another city, filed a lawsuit a few years ago to have it removed. They removed it, of course, but left the quadrant blank. One of the biggest issues with vandalism is kids who go around to city properties and spray paint the fish back in. lol. And there are bumper stickers all over the area that say "Republic, this fish is for you" with an icthus on it.

I think, if she wanted to shoot down Christianity, her plan backfired. There has been so much support for the fish since it's crazy. Even from non-Christians.

 

Here's a crazy thought... why don't we take education out of the hands of the government and allow people to educate their kids any way they want to? Wouldn't it be way, way, way, WAY cheaper to have something along the lines of medicaid or welfare to pay for the education of those who can't afford school? Wouldn't it be cheaper to give everyone a tiny tax break for books compared to the thousands that are wasted on school busses and janitorial supplies and security guards?

Oh, wait... I'm probably being anti-American or something, aren't I?

 

Well, the problem with that is that too many parents simply don't give a rats patoot about their child's education. And many more can't afford to stay home. And there are some parents who are not competent enough to do it (I'm talking parents with genuine disabilities that mean they lack basic knowledge.. think I Am Sam).

Though I'd love a tax break or two

 

Amie, we have a community near us that also had a four quadrant city seal. One of the quadrants had a book and a cross. The book did not specify a religion, but the cross is obviously Christian. It was supposed to represent churches in the community (mostly Christian) since the other quadrants represented other aspects of the community. The ACLU sued the city and they had to remove the seal.

 

Crystal and I don't agree on much...but I am tending to agree with her on this one. I am not 100% on that. I love the posters and hate that they were seen as offensive. However, there are plenty of posters that I would find offensive..even ones that have to do with history...that I don't think need to be up. So...trying to find the balance. Since I hate compromise..especially on my beliefs..this is a tough call for me. My instinct hates it was taken down...but the part of me that knows what will come next...thinks maybe it's best no posters at all. Yes, we have turned into a country of a bunch of 1st graders...lol.

 

Amie - I wasn't talking about HS being the only option. We could still employ hundreds of thousands of teachers/tutors through private programs (just like all the private daycares out there). I know there are people out there who don't care, but eh... I dunno.
