What do you make homemade from scratch?

I know I can google-but I'd rather ask people I trust for tried and true recipes.

    Bread recipes? Share your fav.

Do you make anything in your bread machine besides dough/bread? Mine has a cake setting and jam/jelly setting, etc. Wondering what you make in yours.

I'm going to try and make homemade chocolate syrup in the next few days. I'm excited about trying that.

Do a search on here for Singing Bread and Amish Country White Bread. They are both AWESOME recipes, but neither is for the bread machine.

I'm learning to can. OhioMom invited me to her house a few years back to teach me to can beans, and each year I add one more thing on the list! I can now can beans, peaches, and corn! Plus I can apple butter, and put applesauce and strawberry freezer jam in the freezer. Oh, and I make pies from scratch.

I would LOVE to come... too bad I'm all the way down in Texas. Too far to travel, Although.... My teen boys will be going on a mission trip to cincinatti (inner city missions) this summer. I've been teetering on the idea of going with them.. Don't know though. Youngers wouldn't be able to go and hubby would have to tend to them for the two weeks while working.

    Hmm... from scratch:

Bread, although I found the recipe online. It's called something like "Easy Bread" LOL. Tells you my bread talent ;)

I make chicken pot pie from scratch, although the crust is store bought.

    Stir fry, although that's really a no-brainer.

Apple pie- came from a recipe originally, but have done it so many times I know it by heart and have started tweaking. Again, crust from the store though. Don't quite have the courage to do that all on my own ;)

I have a strong desire to be a from scratch cooker/baker...but unless it's spelled out, i don't think I can do it on my own. I know it's healthier (?), but is it considerably more expensive? I need to do it asap...we have to limit our sons sugar & I'm tired of reading labels =(

I cook from scratch unless I am in a time pinch. I have a sugar free recipe for banana bread if you want it 1momO4. Just tried it from a magazine not too long ago. My BFF's DH is diabetic. I only got one (very thin) slice, and I had to demand that. He ate the rest, lol.

Almost everything. We have some food sensitivities/allergies in the family, and processed foods have become a minefield. So, I cook from scratch, or we do without (not without food, just without whatever-it-is-someone-might-want).

One thing I started for financial reasons, but have stuck with: ketchup. We really like homemade ketchup better.

I make pretty much everything from scratch. One of my favorite things to make are egg noodles. So easy, but people rave about them. I got the recipe from an old Fannie Farmer cookbook:

    3 egg yolks
    1 egg
    1 Tbs salt
    2 cups flour
    3 Tbs cold water

Beat yolks and egg until they are light. Beat in salt and water. Work in flour in by hand (I use a pastry cutter since my nails are long) unitl you make a stiff dough. Cut into three equal parts, wrap each in plastic wrap and let rest a few minutes. Roll out each section on a floured surface as thin as possible and let rest covered for 10 minutes. Heavily dust with flour and roll up like a jelly roll. I cut mine very thin, but you could cut up to 1/2 inch.

The recipe says to hang on a broomstick or chair back to dry. Love the old cookbooks! Anyway, I just toss my noodles in a pile of flour until they are loose and coated. I don't even let them dry before I toss them in with the chicken and broth. They are even better when you use farm fresh eggs.

We try to make just about everything from scratch. We grow veggies in our garden and can/freeze it (beans, corn, salsa, spaghetti sauce,pickles,jams,etc..). My family hunts so we have fresh meat. We make all our own deserts. I use my breadmachine for basically just breads, rolls and bread sticks. Mine also has the jam selections but I've never used them. We try to stick with all whole grains or all natural but we do also have the occasional store bought breads, pizzas, etc.. My dh and I both grew up with all homemade foods so store bought, pre-made foods just don't taste the same. ;)

We grind our own hamburger, make sausage, and jerky.
I'm learning to can now but have always made my own salsa (reg and verde), spaghetti sauce, salad dressing, marinades, sauces.
    I make my own Bisquick.
We dry fruit, you could do that with veggies also for soups/sauces.
I make my own chicken/turkey pot pies, fruit pies, quiches, tarts-but not the crust- I don't have the patience to make that so I buy like 20+ packages (Pilsbury 2 pack rolled dough) at Christmas and freeze them.

I also make my own bath salts, lip balm, sugar scrubs , bath fizz.
My cousins in law make and sell lotions and soaps (all natural) so I get them from her.

Biscuit and Pancake mix (also, waffles, etc)

6 cups all purpose flour (or 3 cups all purpose and 3 cups whole wheat flour)
    3 1/2 Tablespoons baking powder
1 cup instant nonfat dry milk
    1 tablespoons salt
    1 cup vegatable shortening

In a large bowl combine the flour, baking powder , powdered milk and salt, stir until well mixed.
Using a pastry blender ( or 2 knives) cut in the shortening until biscuit mix resembles course meal (small round balls, grains).

Put the mix in a resealable bag, refrigerate for up to 6 weeks.

    For pancakes:
    2 cups of the mix
    2 large eggs, lightly beaten
1 cup nonfat or 1% milk

Stir everything together until just blended, mix will be lumpy. Cook pancakes as you normally would.

    For Drop or Cutout Biscuits:

    2 cups of the mix
1/2 cup of nonfat or 1% milk

    Preheat oven to 450.
Combine the mix and milk stir until moistned.

Either cut biscuits with a cutter or drop heaping tablespoons on to lightly greased ( or cooking spray) baking sheet.
Cutout biscuits: bake for 10-12 minutes.
    Drop biscuits : 8-10 minutes

We started because it was cheaper, and we were strapped for every penny. Then we (DH & I) started getting picky about our food (you get used to true homemade, the store-bought version of "homemade" isn't as special as it used to seem). Then our kids started having food allergy issues, which has made processed foods (and even restaurants) a mine field.

I like to cook so I do a lot of meals from scratch. I used to have a big garden (for town at least) and canned all the tomato products, pickles, relish, and green beans we would need. I froze squash and pumpkin, kale and spinach. I can get corn and potatos from my parents if I want.

I have not had luck with homemade jams and jellies though. I think because I don't want to add sugar. And I don't make all the bread we need. Homemade bread is a treat here.

I cook from scratch partly to save money and partly because it tastes better. I grew up eating foods made with homegrown vegi's from scratch, and meat we raised or bought off of family who raised them without all the chemicals. It tastes so much better than what you can get in the store.

When I know I am going to be strapped for time or I'm not feeling well, I have been known to buy a "helper" in a box. I know... it's horrible right? LOL!
