I know there is a tread on this on here (probably more than one)...

Anyway I have been revisiting the issue of wearing more skirts/dresses, not skirts/dresses only mind you, just more often.

Anyway I found something online that gave a push to give it another go and I thought I'd share it with y'all.

Amy at Raising Arrows and The Modest Mom have paired up to do a series on skirt wearing. The Modest Mom is a skirt only gal and Amy is leaning toward skirts only again Anyway-thought some of you might enjoy reading the series. http://www.raisingarrows.net/she-wears-skirts-series

My dh was raised in a home and church that taught that it was a sin for a woman to wear pants. I was not. Because I was an active child my mom put me in pants a lot to prevent me from showing my underware to everyone around. Naturally pants have always been my favorite. I wear more skirts in the summertime when the temp is over 80. I just get too cold most of the time. However, I like to look feminine, even when I wear things like t-shirts. If I can't get a female cut, I alter my t-shirts. I cut off the neck band (I have a overlock sewing machine to hem it) and tailor the sides. Also, my dh helps me pick clothes that flatter my figure. Wearing skirts/dresses is great as long as one realizes that a guys t-shirt with an ill-sized blue jean skirt is not feminine. Not trying to rile anyone up. Just observing. :D

    LOL That's great, clumsymom!!! :D
I'd rather see little girls being modest during play by not showing their little undies. It's hard to climb a tree and keep your skirt cinched between your knees! :)
I am not sure that Godly modesty means a skirt, or that the only way to look feminine means a skirt, either.

If you want to wear a skirt go for it, but if we were really Biblical here we should be expecting men to wear skirts:lol:

Every so often, when we see a "skirts only" family (and there are A LOT around here!), DH will say something like, "Please don't ever dress like that." He thinks the women who do so look frumpy and don't care at all about their appearance. When my hair starts getting a little too long he sometimes jokes (after I mention needing to get it cut) that it's starting to look ratty like one of those religious women.

Overall, my DH does NOT find the t-shirt/skirt/uncut hair thing attractive.

But there is a woman at our church who is "skirts only" and, aside from the night we got together to play volleyball, she always has a stylish skirt and feminine fitting top. DH has commented that she looks so different than most "skirts only" women.

It's sad that she's the exception and not the norm.

I wear a lot of skirts. I am more comfortable in them and my husband loves them. I am not dresses/skirts-only, only because I don't have enough of them in my wardrobe that are matching to the rest of my tops. I don't own a denim skirt, although I can see why some wear them.. they match just about any top. I can't see myself wearing those, or a jumper type dress. When I decided to wear mainly skirts my wardrobe went from frumpy to nice. I shop at the local thrift store, as I find skirts in my size (plus size) I buy them.

My youngest daughter has always preferred a dress or a skirt. A lot of her skirts have built in shorts. If she is going out to play she will put a pair of bike shorts or leggings under her skirt. She has never had an issue playing because of wearing a skirt.

Jakk, that's a great idea when the girls play. :)
I actually love wearing skirts - esp the flowy, light weight cotton ones. I just don't own many. LOL
But a top, skirt and flip-flops in summer = perfect! :D

There are some days when I think I would like being a skirts only lady. Those days never happen in the winter. Summer would be a good time to try the skirts only idea. I like the thought process behind it, but I do feel like cute capris and summery top can be feminine and modest. My dd used to be a total princess and loved dresses and skirts, but then she hit puberty and decided she didn't like them as much. She will still wear them occasionally, but they have to be more "edgy" and are usually worn with her favorite red Converse sneakers! this thread has given me some ideas for looking for something different on my next shopping trip, though. Being short (5') and sort of apple-y shaped makes it harder.

I think it's funny that you ladies prefer to wear skirts in the Summer. That's the one time of year I absolutely won't wear a skirt! hahaha. I can. not. stand the feeling of my thighs touching. At all. Ever. So I always at least wear pantyhose. But those, of course, get hot in the Summer.

Last summer I began wearing skirts more often because, with the arrival of *ahem*hot flashes, I could no longer abide the Texas heat. Unfortunately, between the thigh issue and the problem of my skirt riding up and wrinkling grotesquely when I drove, I just went back to capris. Pantyhose seemed to make the heat even more unbearable so I'm probably stuck with capris again this summer.

Thanks for the link. I'm not an everyday skirt person, but would like to wear them more often. Besides this it's a great blog with tons of info. She even has an if/then chart that you can print out. I've been needing one of these.

I haven't read the article, but I grew up in a skirts/dresses only family. However, we were permitted to wear "culottes".

I was giggling with my dh the other night, that culottes showed more leg than a pair of pants would!!!

I am no longer of that opinion...I wear modest clothes, shorts, (mostly knee length or close to it) capris, slacks, blue jeans.....

There is a woman at Cub Scouts (a mom) who is struggling with her church right now because she's decided that skirts are too immodest for the level of activity in which her and her daughters participate. She's made dozens of pairs of culottes, but they nearly reach the floor. They aren't even split until nearly the knee. And at that point they are so flowy that I didn't realize they were a skirt until weeks into the year. Her church, which is strictly skirts-only has had more than one meeting with her about their apparel.

Here's my other question for skirts-only people that I never thought of until just now: How do you deal with safety? There are many activities in which skirts would be less-than-safe. Especially those that aren't fairly tightly fitted. Dumber question, maybe, but how does one ride a bike? If the skirt was flowy enough to allow for sitting on the seat correctly, it would also be flowy enough to get caught in the gears. Again... not safe at all.

There are some exercise machines at the gym that have large signs prohibiting clothing that is not fairly form-fitting. Again, for safety reasons. Would you just not use those machines?

And if your daughter wanted to play a sport or activity in which a uniform did not include a skirt how do you handle that?

I wear a split slip under my skirts. I cannot stand the feel of my thighs rubbing together and until I found the split slip I would wear bike shorts underneath. I found ones that are made of cotton, and they are very comfortable and cool under a skirt, especially in the Carolina heat.

I can't remember the last time I was on a bike so I cannot comment on the skirt issue. I have seen women in shorter skirts on a bike though not my thing. I don't wear shorts, never have because I have the ugliest legs I have ever seen. If I were to ride a bike, I think I would wear a pair of capri's.

Great idea! I'm not much of a shopper so I don't know if split slips are readily available? Otherwise I imagine I can sew up a culotte type cotton slip.

I am a "skirt only" lady. Riding a bike is safe... A line skirts dont get caught in the gears.

I know lots of ladies that wear split skirts to work out in at Curves, but most do work out in capris.

I have even gone to theme parks and rode all the rides, even the swing in a skirt. .... A line skirts that a flattering and not so flowy are great!
It is just like everything else, you teach your girls saftey...

I agree there are some that look tacky, but for the most part we still wear clothes in style... we may just layer our clothes
