I'll tell you why I'm so interested in this topic. We started attending a Bible-believing church. During one of the first sermons, the pastor made a passing comment about not believing in literal "days" in Genesis one. It really had nothing to do with his sermon, so at the time, I wished he'd just not said it, because it disturbed me. My husband suggested that we continue our church search, because he thought I'd hold that one comment against the man for eternity and be on "critic" mode from that moment on. (Just for the record:I am much more reasonable than my husbands give me credit for!) I'd wanted to talk directly to the pastor about his views, but his mother was ill at the time and soon passed away; I didn't think it was the right time to ask him about it. So, I had to decide whether or not a non-literal view of Genesis was a deal-breaking big issue or a minor, non-issue. At first thought, it seemed to me that a God who spoke the world into existence in six literal days was a lot bigger/more powerful than a God who just stirred a primordial pot and watched the evolutionary show for billions of years. My second thought was that a non-literal view of Genesis would potentially alter ones view of all that followed. So, thank you for your answers. My initial instincts were wrong; it an interesting discussion, but it's not a theological issue worth fretting over. I'll quit now.

And thank you (and Jackie) for your reasonableness in this discussion. It's a breath of fresh air. I'm so used to hackles being raised and to being labeled a heretic that I sometimes feel I need to wear a crash helmet! In contrast, you've demonstrated a very understanding spirit, for which I'm grateful.

How many do you have?

"Whoever believes that Jesus is Lord and that God raised him from the dead will be saved." Period.

Of course, God gave us minds to understand our world and an innate curiosity, so we'll never stop wondering about things, but they don't affect our salvation. The main reason I harp on about this subject is that we're giving large numbers of people a reason never to visit a church. God, in his grace, will reach them anyway, but that still doesn't give us license to erect barricades that, over time, will need to be torn down.

Jackie doesn't feel this discussion is "reasonable" at all, and isn't interested in continuing it.

That's OK. I was only meaning to be polite in that you are not into name-calling - which, sadly, is what these discussions often end up becoming.

No one building a 797 airplane will do it in a group. I have found that non-homeschoolers in the public school arena in the US do not have the math skills, and often the science skills, to do engineering. Those who do have to spend extra years in school just to get to the starting gate.

Once they graduate with the engineering degrees, they work individually. Collective group though will design nothing. Each person must individually do their own work. In the end, all the work will be put together-by one person, not a collective, to make 1 plane, which will individually be checked over by many people. ALL the engineers I know, except the ones with the DoD, work from home now..alone, often not even clothes! Yeah...think..all these engineers, at home, working to design the parts of the planes, without putting on clothes or shoes.

Bill Nye sounds like a real ass.

ROTFLMAO...only Bill Nye would list honorary degrees on his curriculum vitae!! Seriously...honorary degrees, IF earned...are earned in the same way a home school degree would be earned....through life experience and personal study. He has one legit degree. Then he lists 3 honorary degrees...on his curriculum vitae! Who does that? He feels entitled to those 3 degrees because of the work he did...<drum roll here> on his own, outside the classroom!!

For the record, Ken Ham lists on his curriculum vitae honorary degrees from Temple Baptist College and Liberty University. They are both showmen.
