Rest in peace Dr. Angelou. My heart is heavy but I feel so blessed to have lived in a world with your work to enjoy.
She lived about an hour away from us so the local news is really showing a lot about her life. The local police escorted the hearse when the funeral home came to get her body. It was very moving. A local news woman talked about an interview she did a year or so back. When it was over they were going to make a picture together. The news woman got on her knees beside Dr. Angelou's chair so they would be on the same level but Dr. Angelou said, "Stand up. Do not bow down before anyone but almighty God." I love that!
She was one of the precious few people in this world who was pure, authentic, and honest. She is revered by all types and demographics and truly managed to bring diverse beliefs and people types together with her timeless words.
I was very disappointed with the national press. I was traveling on business this week and happened to pick up a copy of the Wall Street Journal. The only mention of the death of Maya Angelou was a tiny one-sentence paragraph in the bottom-left corner of the first page. She wasn't even given exclusivity in that sentence, which was shared with a sports team owner who died the same day. Shame on the WSJ. Maya Angelou was a national treasure.
This was Thursday morning's WSJ. I actually looked at the front page of the other sections and saw no mention. Maybe they had something on an inside page somewhere that I didn't see. Frankly, though, she deserved more than a very small aside on the front page.
Compare her death with the drug overdose demise of some actor whose principal fame is being on entertainment news every week. The latter's death would be news for days, whereas Maya Angelou is the real treasure.
