We are planning on starting Aug. 1st here. With the new baby due on Labor Day I thought I would try to get a head start. That is a little early for us since we usually wait until the end of Aug. But I have a feeling come Sept. I am going to be pretty busy! LOL

We are planning on Aug 1 here too. That may be pushed back a week. We leave for a missions trip on the 24th and won't be back until the 30th. We may need some additional time to recoup before starting. We'll see how it goes. And that's why homeschooling is so great!

We're starting back August 1 as well. I always try to start the first Monday in August whenever it falls. Then I have plenty of time for periodic breaks. We sort of do school year round with a light schedule during the summer (June/July) and mostly just review. And I take breaks literally whenever I feel the need.... :)

It's funny, I was actually getting on here to ask this same question and then I saw the thread!

**I do use A Beka-whoever it was that asked.....

**And I decorate cakes also, Stacey, I think it was.......

    Cool!

    Trish,

Where are you going on your mission trip? My family got a once-in-a-life-time opportunity to go on a mission trip to Fiji! We are leaving next Tuesday---one week from tomorrow. We wanted to take a bunch of things for the mission school there, but they have major restrictions on weight limit for baggage, so we may not be able to. :(

Once we get re-acclimated to US time and day and recover from jet-lag, we will start school---probably mid-August. I'm trying to "get all my ducks in a row" now, before we leave, so I don't have so much to do when we get back. I've written out a daily schedule that we will adhere to fairly strictly for the first couple of weeks, then we'll tweak it and work with it, so it'll work well, and so they know what's expected of them each day. I have their books all ready, and have figured out what we'll start with, etc. Actually, we'll probably start math first, not long after we get back, and get some of that done before we hit the rest of the subjects.

Yes, FIJI! Isn't that awesome? I've wanted to go on a mission trip FOREVER, and this one just fell in our laps! Someone donated 2/3 of what we neededfor all 5 of us to go (which is no small amount!), and we got the rest in a very interesting way (see Christian Issues and my post about Fiji)! We leave NEXT WEEK! We'll be gone a couple of weeks.

There is a mission school there that needs help with upgrading, building a new building, tutoring, medical and dental clinic, etc., so we are volunteering to be "gophers"---we'll go fer this and go fer that, and do whatever needs to be done!

The stressful part is that there are so many expenses, and a bunch of little expenses keep adding up! We were told we had to pay a certain amount per person to stay where we're going to stay, now they just told us we're supposed to pay $50 more per person than what they said before. But, we just need to keep trusting that God will provide! :D

If you pm me your new address, we could send you a card(then you'd have the fijiian stamps also)! Anyone else want one? I'm sure we'd have time to do that, though where we're going to be most of the time is out in the boonies I've heard.

I'll report on how things go when we get back. We went camping for 10 days, then our dd went to summer camp for a week, then our 11-yo ds went to camp for a week. Now we have everybody home and can finalize laundry and actually start packing and getting ready to go! Phew, this is some summer! 8)

Deena - our mission trip is just to Chicago. Not nearly as exciting, but yet... But really, our middle school youth group goes to the hispanic district of Chicago (our ms pastor is from this neighborhood) and do major renovations to their church, another hispanic church, a chinese church/community center, and an african american church. None of these would be able to afford to do this without our help. Even though this will be my 1st year, dd2's 1st year, and dd1's 2nd the arrangement has been ongoing for 11 years now. And these churches have been using some of our facility renovations to serve their communities.

The primary objective is to expose our students to the world of missions and for them to get first hand knowledge of what serving the Lord's people (especially out of the comfort zone of our own community) is all about. I'm really excited to see God working in this way, this will be my first mission trip. We're still praying that all of our funding will come through.

Anyway, dd1 will have 2 days to prepare her luggage once she comes home from camp & it's off we go. DH will be on a business trip & ds will be with his Pappa. So I'm scurrying around getting lesson plans and supplies ready. Again, the plan is Aug 1, but that may have to be pushed back.

    Trish,

I think that's GREAT! I wish we could find something around here to do like that! Hey, it's a LOT cheaper to get there than ours is!!! This is a once in a lifetime shot for us, so we're just so happy and so thankful we got the opportunity! However, missions close to home are just as important and needed!!!

My son wanted to go to camp this week instead of next week because his good friend is going this week, and his friend's dad is going to be the camp pastor this week also. But then he would've gotten home filthy and tired (and he needs lots of sleep), so would've had a harder time adjusting and being ready to go two days later! So we had him go last week so we'd all have this week to prepare, and he can catch up on sleep, sop we can live with him!

I hope you have a great time! Please share with us how it goes! Like I said, wish I could find something like that around here somewhere, but though I have checked, I haven't heard of anything like that that my kids and I anad my husband too, if possible, could do! I'll keep checking once we're back!

I am getting anxious to begin.....something about placing all the new books on the shelf . I went through the school supply isle at the local Wal-Mart, and I actually felt downright giddy !

Rumpledoodles~ You sound just like me~ I love that school supply aisle! Oh what I wouldn't give for a free shopping spree just in that aisle alone! Have you always been like that? I have! Back-to-school shopping was my favorite!

When I was in grad school, my classmate thought I was crazy! I was absolutely delighted when the ups man dropped off my textbooks for the new semester. Things haven't changed much... the dc are just like

They have to drag me away from the school supply isles!

We have a weekend with no sales tax for school supplies. That is when I go wild. I try to think of everything major I will need. I love that weekend. :D
