I bought CAMP OUT! The Ultimate Kids' Guide from the Children's Museum and it has some nifty stuff in it. We are going to do some cooking over the fire this camping trip. My last try at cooking over the fire backfired. This book has some reciepes that are simple and if all else fails I have the kitchen in the camper. Will be taking some quick fixes as back ups. Oh one idea we are going to try is making our own oven out of a pizza box. Since we are at our hottest days right now this would be perfect. Now I just got to find out if any pizza place would be willing to give a few boxes away. I prefer the small ones if they have them.
I'm going to have to look into that one!!! We love camping but have a hard time keeping the kids entertained.. we haven't even gone the past 2 years because we didn't know what we would do to wear the 2 little ones out enough for them to fall asleep in a tent.
That makes me think of my niece's first camping trip when she was about 18 months old. She stayed up almost the entire night and my sister and bil got no sleep. So the next night they put her in my mom and dad's tent. Of course, she went right to sleep since she didn't sleep at all the night before! My parents have since bought a camper and ds finally thinks he would be willing to sleep in it--not just use it as a playhouse.
That pizza box thing reminds me of something I saw in Boy Scouts. Someone lined a cardboard box with foil and added hot coals, then in the middle there was a rack for food and a little chimney flap at the top. Overall it worked pretty well and wasn't damaged by the heat.
