Okay I have a 6th grader this year and we are using: LA - English from the Roots Up for vocabulary, Mavis Beacon for typing (we don't do handwriting anymore I just expect her to write neatly on everything she does), we do nothing for spelling because she can spell cirlces around most adults, Simply Grammar for grammar and for reading she reads lots of classic literature. She is begining this year with Animal Farm. Math - Math U See Science - Unit Studies on topics of her choice (next year for 7th grade we will get into Apologia) History - Mystery of History Bible - We read daily from the Bible together at breakfast and Mystery of History includes Biblicle History Electives - acting classes once a week Art/Music Appreciation - we choose artists and musicians we want to study. I have a list for the year but don't know it off the top of my head. We read about them and study their art or listen to their music We also do poetry and Shakespeare and I include geography in our history lesson because there is a lot of map work. I think that covers everything.
OK, this is for my 8th grader! History: All-American History Math: Teaching Textbooks Geometry Science: Apologia Physical Science Language: God's Gift of Language, Book C Total Language Plus: A Wrinkle in Time English from the Roots Up Bible: AWANAS TREK Program
Right now... for 2nd & 5th graders Math - LifePacs History - starting Story of the World Vol 1 Science - Apologia - Astronomy Bible - changing to just reading bible stories instead of a curriculum Latin - Latin Primer for both Language - LifePacs Handwriting - copybooks (the happy scribe from homeschooletore.com)

For my 6th grade dd: Language Arts: Rod & Staff English and English from the Roots Up Math: Teaching Textbooks Science: Christian Kids Explore Chemistry (next year, for 7th grade, we're going with Apologia General Science) History: All American History (We're adding in studies on music composers and artists as we are studying that time period) Bible: Our own things History and Bible: Mystery of History (which is some of both) Languages: She chose sign language for this year, so I got a video called "Getting Started in Signing" by Dr. Elaine Costello (we know some, cuz she used to sign when she was really little, but once she started talking she wouldn't sign anymore) Art: She does a lot of arts, crafts, sewing and knitting. We're checking into a drawing class she'd love to take! Music: Takes piano and voice lessons Geography: Oh brother, I ordered it, and it's on it's way, but I can't remember the name of it! But it looked good! Some of this she is doing with her 9th grade brother.
Oh you guys, thank you , thank you, thank you! I am so excited about looking into all of these suggestions! Several were already on my list! I already have math-She is in 7th grade but doing Horizons 6th grade math this year- thanks to PS! She couldn't pass the placement test last year for 6th grade math so she took 5th grade math through Horizons. Some people did say that Horizons is more advanced than PS, so maybe that is so. It would make me feel better!:? Lots of love to you all!
wow! Look at all these replies! If you need suggestions on where to look for what they look like go to Christian Book Distributors.com and they have samples on most of the currics mentioned above! and YEs it is advanced! We are taking 5th Horizons this year for my 5th grader because he is great in math.
Math... Saxon History... American History Lang. Art... Life Pac Science.. Life Pac Spanish... take it at co op Art... take private lesson music... take piano lesson
We may be taking private art lessons this year. Carl suggested I "look into it" for Faythe, which I've not been able to do. Well, last night, a mom I talk with regularly at baseball came up and said, "I don't know if you'd be interested or not, but...." I guess she's got a degree in art and does portraits, and is trying to get a class together. Faythe had showed her her sketch book once at baseball, so she thought I might be interested. Don't know if it's in the budget right now, but we'll see!
If I had a piano my children would both take lessons. Or if I lived closer than an hour and a half from my parents my mother would teach her and we could practice at her house. Samantha may take guitar lessons if I can find someone to teach her. I forgot she also takes an art class once a month at the library and Grace takes a craft class.
Advice on Curriculum PLEASE I am ordering the rest of my Curr. this morning and I am tired of trying to make it PERFECT! If we don't like it, Oh well! I'll start over! Please tell me which you would choose- OR ANY SUGGESTIONS! HISTORY- SOS MYSTERY OF HISTORY VOL. 1 HEALTH- SOS HEALTH QUEST SCIENCE- SOS EXPLORING CREATION W/ GEN. SC. Aaarrrrggghh! I wrote a message and sent it up---I thought! But it's not up anywhere---I have no ideas what happened! Well, I'll try again: HISTORY: Mystery of History SCIENCE: Exploring Creation with Gen. Science ART: Thomas Kinkade SPANISH: We got "Barron's Learn Spanish the Fast and Fun Way" (Third Edition) at Barnes & Noble. THey have a GREAT language section. If you look there or a store like it, you'll be able to look through things and see what looks good. LANGUAGE ARTS: For English, I LOVE Rod & Staff! Last year, my 12yo (almost 13) 8th grader was way behind. He hated English and writing! I had tried many different things, and finally came across R&S. I got the 5th grade book, since R&S is kind of advanced, and I wanted to start where the concepts were explained clearly. He really liked it! We did a lot of it verbally, and when he had problems, he'd write it out. We wrote stuff on our white board also---it's more fun that way! He loves English now, and told me that English was his favorite class! Another nice thing is that it's not very expensive! The books are hardback. Best wishes on your ordering! I'm sure things will go well. If you pick something that doesn't work, it's okay! Find something else!
