Huck, that's awesome - I personally find it much easier to homeschool when you have someone that you can call and ask questions to - in my case it was someone to be accountable to.

I know they must be out there, but the ones around here must keep it a secret or something. There isn't a local support group. In fact, I only know one other hsing family & we were just too different to get along. That's one reason why I was so excited to find this forum. :)

Hi, Eeyore! I had that problem when I lived in IL. My theory is that states with fewer homeschooling laws have less of a need for support groups  I'm hoping that is the case with you--that KY is so easy to homeschool in people don't think support groups are a must :D .

We all need to pray for you and your family to have the Lord lead another family or two into your circle of friends. I did that for my son and the Lord blessed in a huge way!

I agree with Eeyore, I agree we haven't found a homeschool group in the area either. It would be nice but we are doing fine.

I imagine that homeschool groups might be a plus, but if you weren't an independent soul, I'd doubt that you'd ever venture to homeschool to begin with .

Unfortunately a lot of homeschooling groups are kept a secret. In our area it is very difficult to find out what is going on. The *homeschool group* wasn't doing anything and their website was extremely outdated. A yahoo group is set up and that is the one way means of communication posting. The smaller activity groups get started by a couple of peopel who know each other and tend to grow from there.

Keep searching. The group you might find might not be the one but....you just keep looking.

BTW....I'm drawing a blank here now (too many things going on) who was going to the homeschool meeting on a Monday night but, didn't really want to go???? Please let me know how it went.

That was me, She. I didn't get to go because Jeanne's dad couldn't watch her. They're having an outreach on Aug. 4th, maybe I can get to that.

I also wish there were more h.s.ers around here, because I'm seeing more and more of a rift between myself and the other moms in Jeanne's classes. They're all talking preschool and kindergarten, and they kind of get silent when I say I'm leaning toward h.s.ing. I wish I had a dollar for evertime one of them has said ' Oh, I couldn't do THAT!' Or 'My kids and I need a break from each other. They wouldn't listen to me.'

Sounds like a parenting issue to me.....

    Becky,
I know what you mean about the silence when you mention you are a hs mom. I think that people pre-judge what they don't have knowledge about. They misunderstand so in their mind it is bad!

This one lady actually started getting irate and mad at me and she took as a personal attack that I was homeschooling. I only said that I was homeschooling my kids and instead of her saying oh, thats fine. She went off on a tangent stating, "If you homeschool your kids you must be saying something about me, that I am a bad mom for not hs my kids". I calmed her down and explained for her not to personalize our educational choices we made for our kids and it had nothing to do with her, she never entered the equasion. Sounded like a guilty conscious to me.

I figure if someone doesnt like the fact that I hs, I really don't care. I am confy in my own skin the the decisions we have made and that is all that matters.

If I had a dollar for every time someone mentions socializing! :x

My boys have their own lawn mowing business. They do fed govt. property, bank, ambulance and fire dept, museum, private residences, etc. They certainly dont have a problem socializing. We get many compliments about how polite my boys are and how respectful they are.

They designed the coolest trailer to pull behind the "business bike" to carry their lawn mowers, weed eaters, safety glasses, ear muffs, etc. on. Then they helped their dad make it, weld it together and they primed and painted it to match the bike. They get a lot of compliments on it. It has a tall bike flag on it for visibility and is fire engine red to match the bike this year. They pull it with their lawn stuff and go around town to their customers houses and businesses weekly to do lawns. They have their customers set up on a regular basis- same time and same day so they know when to expect them and they have done well for themselves. They work 3-4 days per week. They manage their own money and business.

So, the moral to my very long story. The proof is in the puddin'.!

Keep plugging away Becky- Homeschoolers are AWESOME!

    Staci

Staci, my mom had the exact same reaction as that lady did when she finally blew up at me for homeschooling. She suppressed it for months and months and finally just blew and that was the first thing out of her mouth...."what? was the way I brought you up so bad? You must think that I did something wrong if you are choosing to homeschool!"...she is okay now...well, she might just be supressing it all again for a while...hopefully she's gotten over most of it :?

    Kris,
There is a Smoothing the Way group in Corpus - you could contact them and they might know of some other groups in the area.

Smoothing the Way is a great program and even though you've done it a year...you might get a lot out of it.

    www.smoothingtheway.com
    then click on locations

Ain't that the truth!!! Since you don't get along with them in the first place, maybe you could just smile and say, "Oh, Jeanie and i get along so well! She listens so well to me; after all, I've trained her up to do that......"

Staci, your boys sound like regular businessmen! Good for them! Much more practical than what they'd learn in the "real world of school"!

It's funny, Jackie. It's like they are comfortable with that situation. Something else they'll say is they can't h.s. because they're not gifted, they're not organized, they didn't do well in school, they don't have the patience. Like I do???

It's cool with me if h.s.ing isn't their bag, but I don't like the silence. LOL. You know the feeling you get when you have a coldsore and you know everybody notices it, even though they try not to?? That's the feeling I get when they get quiet!

to find a hone school group

When I was trying to find a home school group here, I put in home school, arizona in the search area of my msn home page. I am so lucky there is a good group here. Since the weather is nice here, we meet at a park each tuesday, the kids play, the moms and dads talk, some put together field trips, we have a clothing and curriculum exchange, there is mom coffee nights (at a sweet shop) and dad coffee nights (at a book store) and book groups, there is a girl scout group, mom/ daughter outings, father/son outings and music and talent shows. We can't do all of the stuff, but the kids love park days. We even have the option of joining the "PE" group called athlets in training. The fee for just being a member is only 10 dollars per year. I feel lucky to be a part of it. :D

I've been looking for a homeschool family near me for sometime now.
I Sometimes feel like my kids are feeling isolated by being homeschooled....I wouldnt change it for the world though. I prefer homeschooing, its a far better education for my kids, (In my opinion) and besides we've had nothing but bad experiences with our local public school.
Its tough finding friends for my kids to play with. Luckily we just moved to a new neighboorhood and there are 3 young families building houses around us. Hopefully my kids will have some kiddos to play with soon.
