    camping

What time of year are we talking? Summer months? How hot will it be for camping? I don't like to camp if I burn up all night long. We will probably stay in a motel. I don't know. I got to sleep well if I plan to enjoy my trip.

It's got to be summer for us! DH is a teacher, and can't get off at any other time, except maybe Spring Break. And it's usually too cold to camp then in Pennsylvania. (And no, we don't have air condition in our pop-up camper!)

Hi all. I did go to the Tut exhibit in LA. We went with our hs group. It was great. Don't know if it will be the same in Philly but......our tickets were for the morning. We did not have to wait in any lines, walked right in, but when we came out the lines to get in were long! So, I don't even know if you have a choice on the matter, but if you do, you might want to try to get tickets for earlier in the day (ours were for 10am). Also, our tickets did only cost $6. We did not have to go in as a group. Finally, I would suggest spending the money on headsets for those that are not yet good readers. Each display explaination was a good paragraph long, and got to be too much for some of the younger ones. I noticed that the kids with the headphones really stayed and listened.

We really enjoyed it and my kiddos are still talking about it.

Rosie, I am interested in the "we didn't have to go as a group". How exactly did that work? Did one person pay up-front in advance and recieve tickets for the group, then passed them out to individuals in advance? The tickets were assigned a time for you to go? I assume all the group had the same time? Do you walk through at your own pace, or are you pushed on from one place to the next?

    Thanks for all the information!!!

Yes, one mom payed. If you were interested in going, she emailed her address to you. All payments had to be received by a certain time, and if not, she didn't get you tickets. She had a large group and didn't want to get stuck paying for tickets. Since we are a homeschool group she passed them out at park days and outings. I believe she received the actual tickets 2-3 weeks in advance. So, once you had tickets in hand, you could arrive and enter on your own. They tell you to arrive 15 minutes early. We happened to arrive much earlier (still trying ot figure out this LA traffic!), and because there was no crowd they let us in early. But, I believe tickets are every half hour. There is a huge tent for people to line up under. It was empty when we went in. Coming out, it was filled. You are first ushered into a room where they show a short movie (you are not seated) and then you are allowed to go into the actual exhibit. There are several rooms that lead into one another. You can go at your own pace once you are in the exhibit. Our group did all have the same time and it was fun to see all of our friends there. They also had a very large gift shop at the end of the tour. Gee, you had to walk through it to get out! But, they had several little items that were very affordable that we bought for the kids.
    Hope this helps!

Rosie, that is a big help! I don't mind collecting money and buying, but am a little concerned about getting them passed out. It'd work best if I could send them individually to each family; that way if someone arrived late, we wouldn't be stuck waiting for them. But if someone is coming from far away, I'd be afraid the tickets wouldn't arrive before they left for Philly. Does anyone have an opinion on this?

Why don't you have them send you a self addressed stamped envelope with their payment. Then you can just pop them in the mail.

That's a good idea, Rosie. And that would work fine for Crystal or Heidi. It may even work well for tho others. But here's what I'm considering. Say someone is coming from further west than Ohio. They figure to make a real trip of it, so they allow maybe a week to travel to Philly, and then plan on spending a week in Philly. If the tickets arrived to me two weeks before our date, this hypothetical family could be on their way across country before the tickets arrive to their house.

Well, that is a tough one. For your sake (so that you are not standing outside the museum waiting for people to show up), I would arrange a meeting place the day before. Maybe a coffee shop. With all the work you are doing, I am sure no one would mind meeting you at a set time to pick up their tickets. My only other thought would be to see if the museum would be willing to hold them for you and to hand them out at the ticketbooth. But, if they are dealing with big crowds, they might not want the extra responsibility.

    tickets

I had wondered if one of the ladies in the area close would order them and that way maybe they would get them quicker by mail. If each family when they mailed the money would mail a self addressed stamped envelope that would help in getting them out to each family. They would have to be sent out the same day as they arrived. Pretty much! It is hard to decide and know what is best. Isn't it?

Guys, they are now accepting reservations for groups. How serious are we about going sometime next summer? A group is ten or more. I am interested in sometime next July or the beginning of August. We're talking 2007; am not sure the cost per ticket right now. Who is seriously interested?

That sounds great! We've got five here. I'm hoping to take our camper and spend maybe a week camping outside of Philadelphia, so we'll have time to see the city and Valley Forge, etc. Maybe stop at Gettysburg on the way home. We met a really nice family from Lancaster while we were camping in New Hampshire two summers ago, and Rachael has been sending her e-mails. They stopped by this past year on the way to Missouri and the girls had a wonderful time. I know Heidi was interested, too.

I would LOVE to do this, but I'm not sure whether we are going back east this coming summer or next summer (2007). If I find out next summer for sure, then we are definitely in!!! We have 5. Not hard for us homeschoolers to make up a group of 10! Especially since Crystal does that with her own family! :D

When will you know, Deena? I'll probably need to get the tickets pretty soon. I got on line to see, and couldn't find the price ANYWHERE, so I may call tomorrow. I know we're talking a year away, but my understanding is that you need to get them that far in advance. If you come, you know Chinook is expected to accompany you! My kids would love to see him again!

A few years back, Deena's family had a stuffed dog named Chinook. He has traveled all over the United States and Canada. Many of us hosted Chinook for about ten days, took him around and showed him the "sights" of where we lived before sending him to his next location. When we sent him on, we enclosed a pictures and pamphlets of what he saw. It was a wonderful project; I'm hoping to sponser one myself sometime, now that Phillip is getting older.

Kris, I understand what you're saying. It's hard making plans that far in advance. Unfortunately, what I hear is that the tickets go so fast that they need to be purchased this far in advance. I'll call, and let everyone know what they say. It may be that we only need to make reservations now to give them a rough idea, and then we can adjust it and send money later. That would be much better!

OK, I placed a phone call and here's what I found out. It's NOT good news, I'm frustrated and irritated right now!!!

First, I called the museum in Philadelphia. They don't know the cost yet; it will depend basically in what they think they can get away with charging. Second, as far as group rates, we are considered an Adult Group. I explained that no, we were a HOMESCHOOL group. I was then told that this meant only one adult per ten kids. If we go as an adult group, it would be a flat rate per person, regardless of age. And then I was told that for Philadelphia, a group would consist of 25 or more people. So I don't see how it would be possible to work it out.

I DID learn that the museum it will be at in Philly is a science museum, and it has reciprocity with the science museum here in Columbus. We have had membership there in the past, and they give discounts for teachers' families (including homeschooling families). While King Tut is special, we would get a discounted price that might make it worth our while to buy the membership to COSI. We'll see.

The bottom line is that I don't see that we can get the numbers to go as a group. I was going by what I had been told had happened in Los Angeles, where a group was only ten and they were fine with homeschooling groups. I assumed it would be consistent, that the exhibition set the prices rather than the museum itself. I am still hoping my family can go; perhaps even if we can't go as a formal group we might be able to meet up or something. Or maybe we can get 25...who knows? I'm open to y'all's thoughts.

We can get 25. Many of my family members hs and are all interested in going. My family alone is 10, that leaves only 15 more. Heidi and her family are 4, plus you Jackie and your family. That leaves less then 10 people for us to qualify for the group. Between my other family members and I can advertise at my hs co-op, we can get 25.
I say we keep on planning.
