Hi all. I have a few homeschooling questions that I'm hoping you all can help me with. My younger son will be moving into 2nd grade. I have serious doubts about what he will learn, if he learns. He is leaving a teacher who was so open to different learning styles, she worked with each child as an individual and he thrived. The teacher he is moving to, she's not very motivated, I know this because my sisters' children are in her class and they are just not doing to well when they had been doing great until they moved into her room. They have discussed this many times with the teacher, the principal, but nothing changes. I worry that my child, who came from a wonderful environment and teacher will be lost and ignored.
Questions: if we are not satisfied with whats happening in the classroom and chose to homeschool, can we start at anytime or does it have to be at the beginning of the year?
Can we still work with the school, like can he attend phys ed with the class, even join some of the afterschool clubs, etc.?
Any good curriculum sites you'd recommend? A parapro at his school mentioned that she understood the school would have to provide the curric and any books needed, but I haven't gotten that far in yet.
Thanks for any info you can share or any resources you can point me towards.

    Lucy...

It all really depends on the school system/state you are in to what they require and will do for you. We're in GA. You can start homeschooling at any time but you must send a letter of intent to the county office. Our county's schools do not allow students to do anything at school other than use the library (but you can't take anything home). They do NOT provide the curriculum for you. You need to find out your state's requirements and see exactly what help they provide.

You can do a web search for your state's homeschool laws. That should help you a bit.

In my state, Michigan, we do not have to send in any letter of intent to anyone! I bought this years curriculum through A-beka and other sources. Our kids can play sports with the school district but I am not sure of anything else.

    Good luck either way!

    Lucy...

Please tell us what state you are in? Laws vary...some like here in Texas are very PRO homeschooler. Others required some type of umbrella school, still others require portfolios or attendance records be kept..

We could answer all your questions if only you let us know WHERE you are?

A wonderful resource to look at is www.hslda.org. That stands for Homeschool Legal Defense Association. They are a group that specializes in homeschooling law and you can look up your state laws (in plain English) on their site. Wonderful site!

I took my son out midyear in IL. I don't believe it would constitutional for any state to forbid withdrawl from school at any point in time. There may be forms to fill out, but not always. IL didn't have any laws at all regarding homeschooling...well, none that weren't "duh" anyway  . But certainly no paperwork.

We are all here to help out so ask away!

    check this site

For laws on home schoolining in your state try A to Z Homeschool's cool. If you do a search on "homeschool" you will com accross it. It has links to tell you what your home school laws are, but I think that you can start at any time most places. You might have to send in a letter to your school district that you are home schooling, some states say that you have to home school for the same amount of time others are in school, some states have to test each year. But be brave, you know your childs needs best.
