Now that we are going deeper into geography, what would be better, a large detailed map or a big book atlas? Thanks. Patty
Personally, I would go with one cheap globe that you can put push pins or stickers on to mark where you have studied, one nicer globe with more detail and a book atlas. I think flat maps can be confusing to children because the land becomes distorted the closer it gets to the polls. AM
I LOVE my internet linked geography encyclopedia (usborne) and I use that in conjunction with a globe and Uncle Josh's big book of outline maps. ;-)
Maybe a few different maps vs one big one? Like we have a US map and after we finish with that we'll move on to add different maps - so maybe one of the eastern world and one of the western world. But a globe would work.... I can't stand maps in books because I always feel I am flipping page to get the complete idea.
We have a map, but there have been times when I want a book-type thing. I use one at the library (until I can find a nice one cheap at Half-Pricie Books!). One thing about a map or globe is that the kids can see where it is in relationship to the REST of the world.
Both! A wall map is good to look at at a glance, but an atlas is awesome! We have a teens atlas of the world, I forget where I got that, but also several others. Usborne books has really great atlases too!
we use a large wall map that I mounted on coroplast. The kids can put flag pins on all the areas we discover and discuss throughout the year. Honestly though, we also have a globe and very nice atlas. If I was only to have one and my kids were young, I'd start with the wall map and go from there. Michelle
here you go! http://store.foamboardsource.com/special-use---expendable-board--coroplast-4mm.html I'm guessing it's also called foamboard? But it looks just like corrugated cardboard, only plastic. I use the boards to mount maps on and for theme signs. Michelle
