Oh where's the smilie with my jaw on the floor?

I received a phone call on Thursday evening and was asked to teach Sunday school on Sunday morning to the primary group (grades 2-5) I knew that there was a problem finding people to fill in for the summer, so I said yes. While I have actively ministered with the AWANA ministry and youth groups, I really feel like a fish out of water right now - I have never taught a Sunday school class and truth be known, I'm scared to death.

Has anyone else taught Sunday school? Is it really this hard or am I making something out of nothing? This is definately a case of looking to the Lord for direction - without His guidance and wisdom, I'm doomed to fail...

Did they give you a curriculum to use or do you wing it? If you have to come up with stuff on your own, just look at it like the council time portion of Awana. Object lessons are wonderful for those situations where you need to drive the idea home AND it helps fill time for first time teachers that tend to run out of things to do before class is over  .....well, at least that is what I did my first time around  .

I was given curriculum to follow and looked thorugh it all over the past couple days, cut out the flanel board pieces last night and (finally) found the pattern downloads online this morning at 12:30.

I tried to liken it to home schooling last night - realizing that it was a couple more children than what I'm used to but God will get me through it...

I taught second graders when I was a Sunday School teacher before Jeanne was born.
They had a story to hear, a sheet to color, a paper to take home and we did special stuff here and there like at holidays.

Don't try to do so much that you overwhelm yourself, Brenda.

It was way out of my league, but I think we managed. I gave them the craft activity to cut out as I was reading the story to them and once the story was done we just made small talk (actually some of what two girls (sisters) were bickering about kind of fit into the lesson really well - BONUS!).

    Survived this week...

Brenda when I fill in for a teacher of the older kids I play a Jeopardy type of game with them. I use constr. paper to make the game board like on the show and each question is worth a certain amount of points. The Bible trivia thread shoulkd give lots of ideas.

What publisher is the curriculum from? I was a children's director for several years. (I quit last year.) I also taught children's church and Sunday school. I enjoyed it when I had a good curriculum. The best advice I can give you is to keep them busy. When they have a slow time is when they tend to get out of control.

Ask Eeyore... she's been teaching Sunday school a long time.

*Please don't hit the Heffalump, Eeyore!*

I think when I taught sunday school, I had the 4 year olds. I did the lessons they gave me, the story on tape, the hand out to color, a craft, and then it was song time. When all the kids got together to sing. It was a whole new thing for me. I was just out of high school. I was not a member at the church very long, and only did it until I went to college. And not having a very "rich" in religion background, I learned as the kids learned.
