Hi all, okay so a while back I went everywhere on the web looking for homeschooling sites so I'm not actually sure when I signed up here! lol But I looked and I hadn't made any posts. I thought I'd introduce myself first. I looked around and you all seem pretty friendly and I didn't want to just jump in when no one knows me. :)
I'm Beth, SAHM to DJ, 4, and Ally 2. We're homeschooling and plan to continue on. My husband is a Marine, and we're currently stationed in Okinawa, Japan. I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you and getting some valuable homeschooling info from here.

Hi, Beth! Just joined up a couple of months ago myself. I can assure you that the ladies here are, indeed, very friendly and most helpful as well. Glad you decided to post! I am rumpledoodles, mum to the Poppet. She is 9 and will be in the 3rd grade starting on the 8th. I would love to hear your homeschooling experiences. I am sure the others would as well! Welcome!

    Howdy Beth,
Welcome. I am homeschool mom to two boys, ages 16 and 14. The Sponge Bob photo to the left is a cake my 14 year old son made and the link below is the Scooby that he made also. He would like to be a chef and own his own restraunt. My oldest son would like to go into computers or work for the fed. govt, forest service, he loves the outdoors.

Welcome, kick back and enjoy! Homeschoolers are AWESOME!

Thanks for the welcome. Settlers have you always homeschooled? I'm in awe of moms who can do it for the long run. As of now we know we'll do it for a while, not so sure about junior high and highschool. I suppose some will depend on where we are stationed and whatnot. I would certainly want to make sure we had a homeschooling group to keep them active in when they were older especially. What made you decide to homeschool?
Rumpledoodles, I'm pretty new at the homeschooling, since ds is only 4, but I am absolutely loving it thus far! I can't even explain how much he is learning. Just a little one on one time and, well it's just amazing. And dd, is only 2, but surprises me everyday. Just today my son was supposed to fill in the blank on a test, he's reading it out loud and dd answered it for him! LOL

Hi, Beth! I hope you will feel very welcome here - this is a great place! You'll find lots of help and info. :-D

I'm Anne, and I hs my ds, who is seven years old. He's in second grade as of last month. We are planning to hs from start to finish. I love the flexibility and the fact that I get to spend so much time with him. Dh is super supportive and teaches him Bible, history and spelling.

    Blessings,

Welcome! This will be our third year of homeschooling (but not in a row). Ds is 9 and dd is 6. I hate to try to assign a grade level since we are on several different ones. We use Math-U-See for both kids. Dd is using the Explode the Code series for phonics. We also have Mystery of History and Considering God's Creation (science) waiting on us to get with the program. We are pretty relaxed. Hope you like it here!

Welcome, Beth! I haven't been on this board too long myself, but I can tell you that everyone here is very friendly and will make you feel right at home.

I hs two boys, ages 13 and 15. We are going into our 6th year. They went to public school until my oldest was through 5th grade. I wanted to hs sooner, but dh wasn't yet on board with the idea. I regret not hsing from the very beginning and I am so glad that you are getting that opportunity.

Hello and Welcome to Homeschool Spot!
The ladies here are all very wonderful, friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. If you have a question about anything, feel free to ask, as someone will surely be able to help you out. We're a very diverse group here, but I've found that we homeschoolers are like one big happy family!
My name is Heidi, I live in PA, and homeschool my 2 daughters- Ashley is 11 and in 6th grade, Gracie is 5 and in 1st grade. We are using a very varied curriculum this year- getting more and more eclectic and less uptight as we go along! I love homeschooling- this will be our 5th year (though not consecutive, as our older dd was in p.s. for a few years). I hope to be able to continue for the long-haul now. It has been a blessing!
Looking forward to hearing more from you! Tell us about Japan.......my younger dd is adopted from Vietnam.

We are using Alpha Omega's LIFEPAC curriculum. I really like it. Because it's all so new to me I am going really by the book. I'm hoping to be more at ease as time passes. :)
Did you go to Vietnam to adopt her, Heidi? As for life here, we're on Okinawa, a little island off of mainland Japan. I't pretty different from mainland as I understand it. Here there are many Americanized things. What would you like to know?

    Beth~
Yes, we went to Vietnam to adopt Gracie- spent 2 weeks there- it was wonderful. Very different from here in the states- but a wonderful experience.

How long have you been in Japan? I would think that would be a wonderful experience for a family- travelling around with the service- what a learning adventure! (Me, personally, I'd get homesick!) But, it's like a never-ending field trip!

I think it's great that you're starting out with something that you feel comfortable using. Over time, you will definitely feel more confident, and maybe want to branch out and try new and different things. This year, we are using such a variety- I would have never guessed it years ago! Homeschooling is alot of fun!

We've been here for 3 1/2 years adn will be here another about 2 1/2. Our hope is to do embassy duty next so we can travel to another country as well. My husband is a Marine, and really aside from embassy duty the only overseas places for Marines are here, mainland Japan, and sometimes Korea.
I really like it here. It is so safe!! The people are so friendly. I absolutely love the beaches, they are beautiful.

    Hi Beth,
We started homeschooling in kinder. and have been doing it ever since.

We started hs because of the ps system. We have friends with kids in school and they told us ugly stories of how the teachers call the students "stupid". Words can hurt.

We feel our boys have learned a lot, we use Abeka and have used it from the beginning. We started using the Abeka Academy dvd part for algeb. last year and this year bought the entire curr. on dvd with their curr. books too. Very expensive but worth. It helps that they let us make payments.

We used the Lifepac last year for the Communication curr.

My boys have no desire to go to public school and we know the ps won't challenge them. This ps is quite weak and if the ps kids inabilities to read at the age of 14 is any indicator of the lack of a quality education, I think we will stick with hs.

Good luck and we are all here for a pat on the back, moral booster or just a good ear!

Oh Settlers I hear you on the PS system! The school here (it's a department of defense school), there was a Kindergartener who made it to first grade thinking the alphabet song, was just that, a song, not letters! There are bullies, the teachers do nothing. They send useless homework home so the kids ENTIRE day is all work, but they learn nothing. It's so frustrating. Then there are the mean teacher.
Heidi, we're originally from Phoenix, AZ.
