How are all your kids doing in school now?

My dd is loving her Teaching Textbooks math (well, as much as any kid can love math! ;) ) I'm so glad I got it for her! For some reason Saxon just didn't cut it with my kids. Oh well...... DD is excited about the postcard exchange! She's enjoying her science: "Christian Kids Explore Chemistry", and is making a Chemistry Notebook with her assignments and Experiments.

My ds13 is moving along in his subjects. He's still adjusting to being in highschool and having more work to do. But he's doing better! I was able to order Teaching Textbooks for him as well, but it was back-ordered, so I'm not sure when it will get here. In the mean-time we are using a Geometry workbook I got at B&N, since he needs some work on those concepts.

I still haven't started our English from the Roots Up. Not sure yet exactly where to fit that in. I may do the Rod & Staff English for them Monday-Thursday, and do the EFRU on Friday???

My oldest will be coming home this Wednesday! My dh is going to drive down to get him, and our dd and ds13 and I will get some schoolwork done and clean the house. :) They probably won't get back until 9 p.m. or so. We will be sending him back on the train on Sunday. We couldn't get enough info. about how to bring another student home, so we'll just bring our own ds this time. Hopefully dh can talk to someone at the school while he's down there, and find out how to go about bringing another student home and getting them back.

I know a couple of people were talking about EFRU---anyone started it yet? If so, how's it going? How are you working it?

They are doing "All American History" together. DS gets more reports and things to do to make it highschool equivalent. We were at the Library on Friday getting books for the reports he is doing. His first reports are on Ferdinand Magellan, Sir Francis Drake, and Sir Francis Raleigh. There was a list in the book, and I told him to pick 3 of them. We had to put some on hold, and they have already come in, so we'll probably need to run to the Library today.

I'm doing lesson plans one to two weeks in advance, and changing them as needed as we go. It's working out very well to help us stay on schedule!

    Okay, so, enough already! :D

Deena it sounds like everything on your end is going great!!

So far Grace is loving preschool work and telling everyone she is in pre-k! We are doing letter of the week, working on phonics, doing Bible stories, going to story time, reading TONS and playing and having fun. She isn't reading yet but she is starting to figure out how to sound words out which is a huge step for her. She also plays games on the computer and watches Between the Lions and Super Why.

Samantha is doing great too. She loves MOH and is actually working on a lesson activity now. She really enjoys making the figures for the timeline.

She also is doing Epsilon edition of Math U See and it is going great. She is doing about two full lessons with tests per week.

We began EFRU last week and to my surprise she like that too! She loves making flashcards. I give her the word and she makes the card like it says to in the book, then the next day she writes the full definitions for all the words on that page. And so on and so on. I will test her every couple of weeks on the root words. She is also reading The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and is almost done with that. For read alouds we are doing Moby Dick because it ties in with our science study on whales. Even Grace listens.

For science we are doing a unit study on killer whales. She loves doing research now that she knows how. I had to teach her how to take notes last year. She will comprise all of the info learned into a lap book. I expect this unit study to take until the end of the month. Then she will pick a new topic.

She is also really enjoying poetry and art and music study. She loves poetry. I think it is her fav. We are reading poetry of Robert Frost now and studying Brahms and Cassat for art & music. For typing she is moving along with Mavis Beacon and we also are reading Shakespear on Fridays.

Samantha is taking drama all afternoon on Thursdays and tumbling on Tuesdays.

Everything this year is awesome and even though last year was good this year is better.

We have some other stuff we're finishing up/working on. That should take another couple of weeks. I think when we finish that I will add in the EFRU.

Glad it's going well with you Tiffany! It sounds like you have a really neat program going this year! Sounds fun to me! :D

We are working our way through the alphabet and it is going pretty well. Except today, of course. It is now 2:00 and we have not done anything. We were planning on getting home yesterday morning, but instead we got home about 9:00 last night. That threw a wrench in my organization!

    Okay, ds 5th grade has
Science ( Considering God's Creation) we love it! The teacher Manuel has exact what to say, infact some of it I just read off to him, in lecture format in our "5th grade Science room" the den.
Then we go to Spelling, ACSI colorful and all we did good last week, he got an A on his spelling! YEAH!
he had only a couple easy mistakes but I give them star words so he actually came out with a perfect score!
Then English 5, bju, it is a lot of work on prepositions and such, things I am struggling with keeping track of and wondering how he is doing. We do the one page together then he does the second one alone, and he is doing them right for the most part so we must be learning something!
Math is Horizon 5th, He does it well but hates doing it Lol, math in general is a pain to him this year not because of the curric, but because it means writing out numbers, though I am letting him do more in his head as the days wear on!
Then History we LOVE! Exploring American History the bju one, the little brown book? WE are doing one chapter a week and then studying the character in that chapter all week. Last week was vikings! Thatw as a blasT! we made a viking ship with legos and little vikings for it and everything!
I am finding time is different each day though with him... he has been fussy this year where he was not so much till the end of the year before so we are cutting back on games he has been doing... he has nintendogs and has so enjoyed each little cyber pup, but its too much and I made him stop that till friday now too!
Dd, has been using her Apologia Science, which is usually second class but today was first, She has a 6 week schedule or lesson plan set up. She is following it to a T! Doing homework even! after that one bump that turned out to be a lab project btw, I am finding I need to be more attentive and pay attention where she is at....
She is following the set up perfectly but I shoudl know what she is learning haha,

For Math she is working on her Algerbra , I found out she is not having any problem with it, she just hates it, now she has incentives to finish her books so she is doing the math? GO FIGURE!

For History, EHW is working grand!
She reads the lessons herself, and does one of the choices of Bible or Grammar questions a day. Plus a weekly paper. Or well she works on it weekly but its actually the Nation project and she has questions to answer on it each week, she got to choose what to do, and this one is for the whole year!
she got to choose a nation and answers the questions regardign time periods we are studying.
She is reading her CSLewis book well too!
has it figured to how many chapters she needs to read a day to finish it when she needs to !
I still need to get that SPanish from church and art is going slow, but HOme Ec is on her schedule so she followed that,
PE will start up soon regularly as well.
thats about how we are doing
I would say over all we are good but have some holes to plug and figure somethings for schedules in ds's classes,

DD7 is liking how we do Language and Spelling. We are using Horizons Spelling and First Language Lessons. We have Horizons Math and she is liking that too. She's just cruising along, some days we do have a GRR moment but its working. Unit studies for the rest. She enjoying the idea of not having workbooks for every subject.
DS3 and DD2 are enjoying their KUMON books, Starfall.com and stuff from EnchantedLearning.com
DD2 keeps wanting to do school thru out the day even when I am working with DD7 or cleaning.
Some days we get up and go to 'school' or we play all morning and do 'school' in the afternoon. I have even done it in the evenings.

homeschooler06, That's the way my dd was when she was 2. Her first words in the morning would be "Let's do sku!" :D

Sounds like people are moving along fairly well!

TMom, Didn't you get the HomeEc dvd thing? I am curious about how that works and how your dd will like it! Is it just for girls, or for boys as well? DS16's school requires HomeEc and Auto Mechanics for ALL students! :D DS13 is wanting to go to that school now as well, of course. He wouldn't go until he's a junior, if he does go. So I want him to be prepared just in case! What grade(s) is that for?

Jen, Oh well, back to the drawing board! ;) (That's what I say when my plans go awry for some reason!) Sorry you got back late! We have things we get behind on as well. But we can make up for it fairly easily by just adding a little bit extra each day or something like that.

DS13 wants to go with dad to pick up ds16. So he is doing extra work tomorrow. He did some extra today as well. He wants to have Tuesday's and Wednesday's done by tomorrow (Tuesday) evening so he doesn't have to do any on the road! Good incentive to get his work done! But I won't let him rush through (as he tends to do) and not do a good job!

Hope things continue to go well for you all!

Yeah, I can hardly wait to have ds16 home again!!!

We have fnished the first two chapters of "All-American History" together, and started the third yesterday. It's going fine for us, though I still prefer MOH. We're also a little more than half-way through Foster's book, "The World of Columbus and Sons". We're reading that as background.

Teaching Textbooks is working for us so far! Though Rachael didn't do as well on her second test as I would have liked (83%). She's keeping up with her science (Apologia) which is more than I can say for Phillip and Faythe (Great Science Adventures: The World of Light and Sound). We started EFRU also last week (and thank you for reminding me that I needed to do that this morning!!!).

HOWEVER!!! Having said that, we're currently on a halfl-day schedule. We spent yesterday afternoon at the County Fair, with both girls doing Nutrition Skillathon. Rachael got an A-grade, and Faythe got an "Outstanding" (which absolutely amazed me, since I think Rchael did a much better job on her project!). We were up late last night making Orange Chocolate Chip Breat (Rachael) and Pineapple Cream Muffins (Faythe) for the Baked Goods Auction today. Finishing up projects have taken highest priority, with Faythe finishing hers YESTERDAY morning!!! Well, tomorrow we can go back to our full schedule!

Deena, we were racking up the costs so I went with the life paks seperately for the home ec, I chose two for now that are related to her designer stuff. They just happened to turn out to be set up with lesson plans on Donnayoung too! SO I printed it out, and have her doing it 2-3 days a week so the two books will last one semester. Next semester we will do something else.. either more of the same or whatever.
The one thing I have noticed is they seem geared more to girls, we skipped the books that deal with dating and such, make up is mentioned in one and things like that.
she we have done four all together nwo because we did two prior to this year.
I think for teaching boys, are you looking at cooking and stuff? OR sewing as well? There are some good books that teach these seperately and after the life paks I am planning to choose one stricktly on sewing, and then teach her to follow a recipe on my own, though it does touch on that in the levels we have breifly.
I think that Geekymom has the DVD and started using it with her dd.. she may have more to day on that, I mean CDrom, ?

I don't know exactly what is "supposed to be covered" in Home-Ec. I'm not sure what the requirements are. Hmmmm, I'd like to know more about the Home-Ec cd! But yeah, I don't want a bunch of girly stuff! There must be something out there that covers a variety of things in a decent way for boys as well! ANYONE KNOW OF ANYTHING?

Jackie, I like SOTW and MOH better too. Although I like that these are written at a higher level than SOTW, so I don't have as much work to do to raise it to ds's level! My two checked out a couple of books to read on their own for background. You know, it seems like an awful lot for highschool, as she recommends doing almost all of the "For Further Study" things. But that's way more than my ds can keep up with, along with everything else! I'm having him do one thing right now. Are you doing any of the "For Further Study" things? I'm also making up tests on my own for ds to do. One test per unit. That helps bump it up a notch as well.

Tiffany, Thanks for the well wishes! DH and DS13 are leaving in the morning to drive down to get DS16. We are all looking forward to having him home, even for a few days! We'll be picking his brain on how things are going! He's not much of a talker though, so we'll see how much info. we really get! While the boys are gone, DD and I will have a girls day! We're going to HAVE to go to JoAnne's and Michael's! :D

Deena when I was in Home Ec, something I took each year of highschool just about from 8th grade , we learned cooking for half the year, then sewing the second half, the first year,
then we learned cooking and childcare, as the school I went to had a special deal with local school I got to go help teach kindergarden a couple days a week.
For sr high I did cooking and child care at a school with day care in the home ec room, it was in Wa state and the class was made for this, cooking areas looked liek a t v show set! SO COOL!
So I am teaching mostly related things to this.

Well, ds13 is a very good cook! He's done that a lot! I could probably count what he does as home ec, then, huh?! How many credit hours of home ec does one need? 1/2 or 1, or more?

so far so good with our schooling. Although there are days when my 11yo seems to think that just because he did his 2 classes at the ps he's done with school for the day. (in comes the attitude and the arguing to get anything done) 11yos does love tapestry of grace and he's doing awesome on math u see gamma. Science we've changed that a bit. Now he's just doing a worksheet about a scientist each week. (scientist detective from concidering god's creation) This quarter at ps he has speech class so we backed off on writing assignments. next quarter will be art then 3rd quarter computers and finally 4th quarter: electronic science. 4th quarter will be his science, we won't do any other at home. He loves his PE class.

    We are having "moments" LOL

Both kids are doing great with LifePacs Math (grade 2 & 5)
Daughter rocking right along with LifePacs Language Arts (grade 2)
Son - just got language arts grade 3 to fill in a TON of holes left by public school (he's in "grade 5) but I also picked up grade 4 so we can move right into it. Using LifePacs

Science - slowly getting into Apologia Astronomy - and mainly it is because of schedule issues - same with SOTW history.

Both are doing AVKO spelling and doing alright with it. I'm going to go back and give a small quiz soon which should have been done last week. BUT we haven't had a good solid week without interuptions which is fine we'll work through it and moved today's lessons to Sunday and stuff like that.

I almost can't wait until Winter when people leave us pretty much alone since our farm is closed and most of our stuff gone :)

I believe it is one year , so 1 full credit? Cause we did sewing half year then cooking half year, or visa versa,
and sewing can consist of hand sewing, cross stictch is done by sailors at sea you know? Keeps thier hands busy and them awake on watch!
Then there is simple stich sewing and sewing machine of two projects, one we did was a book bag, and one was a shirt.
So I am doing purse for dd out of old jeans, and then for ds I will have him do a back pack, thats pretty easy to do actually these days!
they learn to sew straight with paper and lines, just like you use for learning to write

Catherine's loving the Math Mammoth multiplication. I don't get it but we never touched on it last spring and now she's got the concept down and is loving it. She's also working on Calculadder drills to speed up her addition and subtraction.

She's doing review in grammar so we can get back to Easy Grammar 3/4.

History, SOTW with LOTS of extra resources is going really well.

I finally found a foundation to teach science from without a curricullum through a workshop at How to Teach Science. Instead of concentrating on planets or air pressure the focus is on key skills like observation, thinking skills and writing clearly. Also scientific rules, latin and greek roots for deciphering jargon and working up from atoms and elements of the periodic table. I'm loving it.

We're going to start art by working on drawing and also art history (it should roughly correspond with SOTW)

Our language in going to be Greek. I want to learn to read ancient greek and Catherine's keen on it as well so we'll see how it goes with that.

For my son, nothing formal except two days a week at preschool with my sister. Catherine had her years of unschooling and I think Harry should get the same. :)

Hi, it is so nice to see where others are in there schooling!!!
DS13 is doing great with Math-U-See Algebra 1, but I think that I am going to do the Teaching Textbook for next year.(I think that it would be more to his learning type). He is doing Apologia Biology and is progressing right along(looking forward to the field trips that are coming up!) He is having some trouble with English- we are using Rod and Staff grade 8. I think that I am going to have to find him some Grammar text to supplement with. We just got our North American History in and he LOVES it(more his style). We use the McGuffey's Eclectic Speller for Spelling and he likes it ok(English and Spelling are his weak subjects) We are reading though the Narnia Chronicles for his Literature and I have to force him to stop reading so that he can get through his other work, lol. We did the Learnables Spanish, but he is finding that really boring(he said he wanted to to Japanese this year, NOW he tells me!) Is the English from the Roots up more Grammar based? Is it a daily work or just every so often? He really needs supplement for grammar.

DD7 is in love with school(I love this age!!) We are using mainly Rod and Staff curriculum with exceptions of Math and Spelling. We can't seem to keep enough math for her. She would do it all day long. We usually School for about 5 hours a day. Then to housework and fun.

I really love hearing about what works for all of y'all! There are not alot of HS around here and so finding a site that I can find out about other's HS experiences it invaluable!
