Which SOTW are you doing? Did you get the Activity book?

What are you using for Greek? We are using www.greeknstuff.com My ds13 is in Book 3. Actually we're reveiwing it now, and hope to get to Book 4 in a month or so. Just today dd10 asked if she could take Greek also. I'm not sure she really wants to, or if it just looks neat to her when her brother writes the Greek words on the white board for practice??! :)

My ds also wants to take Hebrew (he may want to be a pastor when he's older, so he figures it wouldn't hurt him to know some of this stuff now). ;) I haven't found any very good sources for someone his age to learn it, though I'm sure it must be out there somewhere!

Sounds like we have sons close to the same age! My ds13 is doing R&S English 6! He was way behind, and I couldn't find anything that clicked until I found R&S. So now we are playing catch-up, which is okay by me! I do think R&S is kind of advanced, if you've never had it. They have a regular way of doing things, so once you get the hang of it, it seems to flow more. Have you thought of trying him a level or two back, then work your way forward from there? The lower levels explain it all very clearly, and go over it a little more slowly so they can catch on and retain it better. just an idea.

My ds is also doing the Apologia Biology. What field trips are you taking? I'm not sure what would go with what he's studying. We got the book late, so we are only 2 weeks into the program. We got the schedule for it off of http://donnayoung.org under Apologia Science. It's been VERY helpful for us! We also got the companion CD which has a lot of good helps as well!

We have EFRU, but haven't started it yet. It's Latin and Greek root words that they learn. We're starting in a couple of weeks, when they (his sister, age 10, and he) are finished with another thing they're doing.

What math are you doing with dd? Have you tried Horizons? It's supposed to be a good one!

Hope things continue going well for you!

I am thinking about going back a bit on the English, he just doesn't seem to have mastered his grammar enough to move onto the writing part that the Grade 8 has. With the Apologia, we are using the Donna Young schedule too(I love that site!!!) In Module 2 the experiment 2.1 suggests a field trip to a pond. DS is a nature buff so this is right up his alley!(He looked ahead in the book to all the experiments)
With DD we were using a Modern Curriculum Press,(I got from a PS teacher friend of mine when we told her we were HS this year) but it was used so in about a month(when we have gone as far as we can with this) I was planning on using McGraw-Hill. She really like the workbook type learning. I have not tried the Horizons. DS did SOS though and we had a really bad year,so(even though they are 2 totally different learners) I have been reluctant to try the AOP again.

Yeah, that's pretty neat! Do you guys have that companion cd? It's not much to pay out, and it has been very helpful so far. DS did really well categorizing things today, and he said he really didn't understand it before watching the cd! Boy, for me, it was almost worth it just for that! :D

I think you guys are a bit ahead of us. So we'll see how we progress....

Deena, Rachael is doing a report on one of the explorers. Actually, all three are, but I'm expecting Rachael's to be more in depth. I'm also expecting an outline for her report; she learned that in the English class she took last year, so I'm trying to keep up those skills!

Home Ec to me would include:

Cooking: This to me includes meal planning, nutrition, food safetyas well as knowing how to follow a recipe and make adjustments. Reading a nutrition label, comparison shopping, buying "prepared" food vs. "homemade"...anything like that. The 4-H food projects are really good in those areas. I would strongly recommend them. You can purchase project books for a reasonable fee ($5 here in Ohio), and don't need to be part of 4-H to do so.

Sewing: Again, 4-H has good projects. I want my children (male and female) to be able to do basic sewing. By that I mean they can sew on a button and fix a hem or torn seam. I don't feel the MUST be able to sew a garment, but I won't discourage them from learning.

Child care: Rachael has taken the babysitting class from Children's Hospital. I think that's an important part of Home Ec. I want all of my children to understand safety factors in relationship to young children, an idea of what is age-appropirate play, things like that.

Basic home maintainance I think I would classify as Home Ec, too. That would include house cleaning, changing light bulbs, knowing how to deal with a blown fuse, etc.

Laundry. Am not sure where that fits in, but that's also home ec!

Deena I think it is included in the CD, it has video peices to it.. dd is going to show me tomorrow what she thinks is that stuff you mentioned up there.
I taught the kids at Get Real (recovery) Bible study tonight, they had a million questions about heaven, Jesus, sin, etc. Thank the Lord I knew most of the answers and the rest I could refer to someone else telling me something, and even say I really don't knwo about that!
One kid wanted to know if there would be xboxes in heaven!
he then asked about the other options, and was totally seriously listening to each answer, asked if his family would be together that part was sweet, but all that is to say... I am glad we are studying biology christian wise because I had some answers that I would not have had! Plus the History we are using, helped too! Because it starts in the begining!
One girl started the question with what is God like?
What is anyone using for Bible curric for kids? My son knew the answers because he has been doing Life Paks for bible since day one, plus reads on his own , ds10.
I was a proud mama! Glad I homeschooled!
