My son hates to read to me out loud. I still have him do it from time to time so I can hear his progress on reading. The whole time he complains or doesn't read to his potential. Is this normal? Also when he reads out loud to me he reads really slow, but when he reads to himself he seems to read a lot faster. Not just a bit but a lot faster. Now I am wondering if he is just skimming the pages and not really reading the whole thing. Or am I just looking to much into this?
DD7 likes to read out loud if she really likes the book. If its something she don't like then its a GRRR lesson. I just tell her that it has to be done and to deal. That doesn't work with her but she just gonna have to learn it's not all fun and games likes she things staying home is. I do try to get books I know she likes so she will read for me but I do get tired of princess. I think we now own every princess story from the orignal stories to the disney ones. She likes all the versions of the princess stories. We even have the Barbie princess books. Though I am sure once my DS3 is ready to read it will be all about cars. Thats only 2 more years away. Then back to princess for DD2. I do reward for reading. DD7 is saving up to go to the toy store to get a new polly or littlest pet shop toy. Also to encourage the out loud thing I got this site from this forum http://www.bookadventure.com/ I haven 't completely check it out, it not for us at least I have a place to get a list of books to read.
My ds (11) doesn't like to read at all, nothing. I had him do his reading this morning, 3pgs and I asked him questions and he had NO clue what was going on. I almost have to have him read out loud. And he is not a good reader. We just took him out of ps and we did everything they told us to do for4yrs and he still can't read. That wasn't much help was it. Sorry there was a little vent there!!!!
Lynne, my son was the same way in ps. He is also 11 and we did everything the ps told us to and he is still not that good at reading. That is why i check the progress with out loud reading.
Is there someone he does like to read to?? I know my neighbor taught in a public school & her kids didn't like doing school work with her, but they would do it with me. Maybe there's someone he could/would read to a neighbor, grandparent, older sibling.
dd is the same way- although she is reading quicker out loud and more willingly lately. But she does read a lot faster when she reads silently. She read a rather difficult book last week silently. She went through it so quickly that I didn't believe her. I didn't let her know I didn't believe her, but I went through the book myself and started asking her questions about it, then I'd find a page here and there with more difficult words and have her read them to me. Low and behold she really HAD read the whole book lol.
No, there is no one that I know of that he likes to read to. Also all of my family has moved away these last couple of years so there is really just us.
I hate reading aloud. It's just me - but I always read at a higher level than expected. My son doesn't read aloud well and my daughter just doesn't like to read aloud.....
My dd & I are both like that. We read much faster silently because our mouths don't have to keep up with our brains. I personally, trip over words a lot when reading outloud unless focus really hard (which is not easy for me). If I try to read out lout at the same speed I read silently, I stumble, stutter, skip words, and am talking so fast no can really pay attention to the story. My dd is the same way. I hardly ever make her read outloud from a book (I'll have her read directions for a worksheet or other assignment) because I know how hard it is for her. When she reads to herself, she can read many chapter in a short time, but out loud it would take much, much longer. So, I make study guides for the books I have her read for 'school' and she has to do some kind of project (she's got a long list to choose from) for any book that she reads, so that I know the comprehension is there & that she really read the book.
