Like others have mentioned, we take off the federal holidays because DH has it off (Army family). He had off today so we did too.....I really would have liked to have done something but it was kind of nice to have a lazy day....I read a book....ALL DAY (except for laundry and meals)....and taking our 7 yr old to the dentist for a baby tooth that just wouldn't come out despite MONTHS of being wiggled....monitored by the dentist and wiggled some more.

We don't always take the whole day....I'll usually sneak in something educational but we didn't do that today.

We do about the same as everyone else. We take days off as we need them for fun days or for field trips. DH works 2nd shift at his job so a lot of the time we will take the first half of the day off to go to a family activity then we will come home and do school work after daddy has gone to work. We usually take off the whole week for Thxgiving and 2 weeks for Christmas and an extended weekend in April for a spring break.

The rest of the time we try to diligently work hard at learning.. but it is not always at home! One of the reasons why we love to homeschool!

We are taking off tomorrow for our (Columbus Day). and going to amish country. I don't think I am going to take off for every holiday. And I'm not sure about taking two weeks off at Christmas... Does anyone take off that long for Christmas???

we usually have about a week to two weeks, it depends on what we are doing, and in the past if we were done with our book 5s in Life Paks we got that as a reward. Considering there were 6 months left and 5 books to finish it was a good plan!

I think we will take a week and then be off New years day!!! Its my first year so I'm not sure if we will have done what we are supposed to or not, hopefully we will. We are basically working on math, reading, and history.

We take them off sometimes and other times we do not or we do a half day. It depends on how we feel. I also like to give my ds extra time to spend with his ps friends! I work for the school district in a neighboring town and sometimes I just want one of my days off to catch up or do my own thing, like sleep in!

Do you take regular holiday days off?

    No, not necessarily.

    - Do you do school on federal or national holidays?

    Yes

    - How do you decide which ones to take off and which ones to school during?

We work around my dh's schedule and generally take off time when he takes off time.

    - Do you take more or less time off than the local schools around you?

We take off a lot less time but do a lot more feild trips and things like that.

    - What do you do on those 'free days' ?

Field trips, free time ;-), or we often take off around the major holidays to make holiday preparations.

Do you take regular holiday days off?
Yes - we work to 9 or 10 week terms with 2 or 3 week breaks, and then 6-8 weeks off over christmas

    - Do you do school on federal or national holidays?

sometimes....if it is a significant day to us, we take it off. If it is a meaningless public holiday, we sometimes school on it. Sometimes we use these days to catch up days when I have had to do something extra for work (which means holiday for the kids)

    - How do you decide which ones to take off and which ones to school during?
    see above!

    - Do you take more or less time off than the local schools around you?
more than the public schools, who often have at least one 11 week term each year. I just find that the kids get frazzled, and it just isn't worth it.
    less than the private schools.

    - What do you do on those 'free days' ?

sometimes nothing. sometimes structured things like tennis club, or swimming club, or summer string school (music), or science club days. there are lots of things on in the school holidays here that are not available during term time. sometimes we just go to the beach, or a bush walk. My problem is never finding something to do....it's fitting it all in, lol

We take off 2 weeks for Christmas, but that's because it's a busy time for us. We have anywhere from 5-8 Christmas celebrations we do each December. We have a large family & unfortunately parts of it don't get along. So, we have to celebrate with many different parts. Plus, my son's b-day is the 23rd, and we take all our b-days off.
I usually assign dd some work to be done over our Christmas break. I don't want to try to do all of our regular work on the few days during that time that we actually have to ourselves, but I also don't want her to have 2 full weeks of doing nothing. So, I'll assign something small & have her still work on Math & reading daily. This will be our first Christmas doing semi-structured work with ds. I'll probably at least keep up with reading & math. Those are really easy to fit in to our day, no matter what's going on. I'd love to take less time off, but unfortunately we're just too busy during that time.

Yesterday was Thanksgiving, the plan had been to do school work but grandma wanted to spend the day with the older 3 , that was more important than school work so they had the day off. Christmas we are taking 2 weeks off to prepare for the holidays, celebrate etc. We just took 3 weeks off due to baby so we will be doing school work on all other holidays as long as they are home and not with a relative visiting.
