My ds 13 is doing Apologia Science Biology with a "tutor" I guess you could say. She makes a lesson plan for her students to follow and they meet with her about twice a month. She wants him to do a cell model. I really have never done this. I`m really not sure what to do. I think this is something she is doing on her own, because I cant find it in the book. Has anyone done anything like this before? I need suggestions, or pictures ( I`m a visual learner) It is due next week and I`m at a loss. The paper she sent talks about drawing or 2 or 3-d models. He has done a drawing, but I`m not sure how to proceed. I hate to ask her and look like a total idiot. She is very educated. Help!!
I'd ask. I'm sure, if she's done tutoring like this before, that she's been asked again and again and again. She would probably rather have you ask than muddle through all confused, or wait until a day or two before and call totally frustrated.
Well.. I would ask, too! Don't worry about the fact that she's been educated. I'm sure that people have asked her before! For my ds10, to draw models of something, I have him draw it from the top, then from the side (as in a building or something..). Maybe you could have your ds draw a cell in a basic format, i.e. the cell wall, the nucleus; and label the parts? I wish I could be of more help, but I'm not clear on what she's wanting. I can't upload any photos yet.. but a simple cell model would consist of a few circles, one inside of the other; the outside being the cell wall, the inner circle being the nucleus. Does the tutor want a specific type of cell? You could probably google to find some pictures. I always use Wikipedia for things like that, which helps. Sorry I can't be of more help.
I have done Exploring Creation with Biology twice with older teens, as a tutor. I do not remember anything about this particularly. I would ask her also what her expectation is.
Hi, I found a really cute model of a cell that you can make. Type in jello cell model and several sites will pop up. We did it several years for a co-op a few years ago and it was a big hit. Clarynda
Clarynda, how cool is that!!! I did a search and found the links you mentioned. One is even with Enchanted Learning!!! Here it is: http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/animals/cell/jello/
I emailed the teacher and she gave me some suggestions. I ran them by my ds. Then we surfed the net a little and found a lot of different pics and his mind got to working and he came up with a cool way we had not seen. So now we are working on it. I will try to post some pics when we get it done.
We are doing Apologia Biology this yr too. Dont know if it would help you or not but there is a web site where you can get lots of helpful things. www.donnayoung.org
Here is a picture of his model. Also a drawing that he did. We made the model out of corn sryup. The floating things are candies. It did not turn out as well as I would have liked. Everything just started floating around willy nilly. I didnt want to do the jello thing because that seemed to common. And I didnt want to look like we were just copying someone elses. But he got a great grade on it. So I guess that is all that matters. He said a couple of boys in his class made theirs out of Legos. Why in the world didnt I think of that? We have so many around here its unreal.
I would get some multi coloured clay either oil or playdough and make the cell parts, rather organelles with that. Most of these can be made with little rolled out pieces into shape. You could then make a 2 dimensional model buy laying them out in a shape that represents the cell wall (make the cell wall from two colour layers or ropes of clay for accuracy). If you want to get fancy you can dryout then suspend the parts from a mobile with fishing line to make it 3 dimensional. Then drape with a plastic bag or two. The ziplock model above is great also, use two bags however. Hmmm if making a plant cell what to use for the wall??
We did use two bags. Im just glad its over lol I got a lot more ideas after it was said and done. So when my next one comes along we are prepared.
I Can give you a suggestion for a Cell Model, use Play dough! we did this with younger kids for thier Science about brains and they made modles wiht playdough, you have colors and can do the whole thing that way. Look for a picture with colors, and then get that color play dough, have your child do it via that. I love it!
