Hi Everyone! I'm Carrie, mother of 7, h'schooler for 12 yrs now. Oldest child is in junior year, youngest child is almost 3 yrs old. I appreciate a message board using this format! Easy to use, easy to read, easy to search, easy on the eyes. I live in the middle of nowhere in Georgia. 15 minutes to closest city. 25 mins to cities large enough to go out to eat. Nice and quiet! Unfortunately it is expensive top go anywhere. We use a variety of materials in a variety of ways. I don't follow one specific method either. I have just discovered studying history chronologically. I love history now. I am frugal, crafty, and opinionated...but nice. I love roller coasters. Fall and spring are my favorite times of the year. I hate lima beans. I love planning, but fail to follow through. :| I love the AWANA program because I love God's word. Thanks for being here. Carrie
Welcome to the board a wonderful place to be. Hi I am Kris I homeschool for 3 years two dd's who are in the 5th and 7th but doing alot higher work. Hope you enjoy the board.
hi, I'm new too. I don't mean to hijack Carrie's thread (Hi Carrie!) but thought maybe it's a good intro thread... I am HSing my daughter. She will be 4 in October and doing some kinder and some first grade work... I know that's young but I can't slow her down. "studying" is her favorite thing to do. Since she is so little everything we do is child-led I don't want her to feel pushed at all so we do lots of games, videos, computer games, books and the girl goes through workbooks like they were the best candy in the world. I also teach enrichment classes at an elementry school. I heard about this forum from someone in A to Z teacher stuff.
That's great. Some kids beg to learn. My oldest at 3 was begging me, "Mommy, PLEASE teach me to read!" By first grade she was reading at the 6th gr level and comprehending at 4th. However, my 3rd born was very late to learn to read. But by the time he was 12, he read and comprehended as well as my dd did at the same age. It is good to let the child give you clues about what is exciting/challenging/stimulating. I would love to hear more about the enrichment classes you teach. Carrie
Yeah, Sami started this when she was two and the Librarian said she couldn't have a card because she couldn't write her name. She took it as a dare and never stopped. I'm using 'teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons' She begs for more lessons everyday. Enrichment is the afterschool program parents pay to have their kids go and its a popularity contest for what classes go or stay. My classes are: internet safety for 1st-3rd grade- They learn all the 8 safety rules for being online and they earn an internet Driver's license. Internet Explorers -- kids who finished internet safety learn to research the web by finding online games and completing puzzles from them. Zoom Club - I have two classes on for k-2 and one 3-5th it's from the PBS show ZOOM I pick a diffrent activity from the ZOOM website for each class. They make stuff like model rockets and rubber bouncy balls and castles made completely of marshmellows. In other words we make a huge mess and call it science! This year I'm starting to teach Microwave cooking for 2nd-5th this one is really new to me so I'm testing our recipies... Classes start next week. I think my Boss called it "Kids in the Kitchen"
Hi Carrie and all the newbies! I'm Missy and I hs my 8yo and 4yo. This is our third year. We also use a variety of curriculum but I love Scott Foresman for my third grader. Syele....the enrichment classes sound awesome. I bet the kids really enjoy them! Do the parents get to pick the classes or do they just attend all that are offered? I would love to hear what things you're cooking up in the "microwave cooking" class. Keep us posted!
Hi Missy. The kids and parents are given a course catalog and they have to register for classes... reminds me of college. Classes are $20 a classes and meet once a week for 8 weeks. If a class is full they can't get in so they all try to be first to register and if a class dosn't get enough intrest it gets dropped. I'm nervous cooking won't fill up. *praying it fills up* The first thing we will make will be cupcakes. Assuming they turn out well when i try it myself. I'm a single mom trying to keep my kiddo home with me and work at the same time. If classes go empty I have to find more income. Enrichment is great cause Sami is now old enough to go with me... classes are free for her if I'm the teacher and next year she'll be allowed to sign up for the kinder level classes at 1/2 price since I teach there. She is SO excited that she gets to go to the school for classes.
Another long lost buddy (AWANA is one of my passions) 7 children...WOW! I'm Brenda, I live in New Brunswick - close to the border of Houlton Maine. We have three boys 13, 10 and 7. Truth be told, I'm not sure if we're home schooling this year or not (I want to, but my husband still doesn't 'get it' - LONG story). All of our boys are ADHD, one has Tourette's and also ODD amongst other things that seem so minor in comparison. If I do home school this year, I will be using a variety of curriculum choices but most of which will be Christian based...
Just wanted to say welcome to the boards! :-D I am hsing mom to two teen boys, oldest is a junior and youngest is in 8th grade. This is the start of our 6th year and we also use an eclectic mix of curriculum. Looking forward to "talking" with you more!
re: enrichment classes The enrichment classes sound like a good idea. Teachers and substitutes in our area get paid to work in "aftercare." I think they treat aftercare like a study hall. Boring! Maybe I could ask my local school if they are interested in doing something like that. I love teaching and our family needs money too.
http://www.hillrise-enrichment.com/ is the website if you want to know more about the enrichment program
Welcome Carrie and Syele! I'm Anne, I teach my 7yo ds, who is in second grade. We've been hs'ing from the beginning, so we are into our third year now. Blessings,
