Dd loves the ancients but she hates the SOTW. Hates the book we read. I'll have to say it bores me to death too. I can't find most of the books she lists for extra reading in the Activity book. Any ideas?

I love the activity book and I'd like to keep following that part of it, but I need something replace the little text book and soon. Dd LOOOOVES history so I don't want not do it for too long.

The SOTW tracks along nicely with the Kingfisher and Usborne history Encyclopeadias and others as well.

You could do nicely by combining the questions and activities in the SOTW Atc. book with such a reference book. That was my plan at first until a seller here gave me an offer I could not resist on both the Reader and ACt. book for SOTW 1 together.

It must have been in God's plan because the reader is working well for us so far . We read it at story time at night some nights before I read what the kids pick. We then cover the encyc on the same topics and discuss them with questions in the SOTW act. book during hist. time in school. I also have the kids watch related vidoes on cosmeo. Right now we are doing a lapbook on egypt instead of what is in the act. book because we started before it came.

The activiety book actually tells you which pages in king fisher and usborne track along with it so using those instead of the sotw text is a great fit to still use the activity guide.

I just bought the cd's for the SOTW story book and let me just say it is WAAAY better than me having to read it. Too many names and places that I struggle to pronoun and they just say it like it is no big deal. They weren't cheap but...neither is private school and I figure as long as I am not spending $800 a month on curriculum I'm still ahead of the game. ROFL

We have the Kingfisher Encyclopedia and I do use that to go along with.

I should have said I can't find the extra literature she lists at the library and I don't have the money to order them either.

Maybe I'll get the cds and see if she likes that better. I love history too, but when it comes to reading it, I find SOTW really dry lol. And I've read a lot of history novels and biographies in my time.

So maybe till I get the cds just use the Kingfisher to go along with the activities? Do you think there is enough information in there?

Does your library have the inter library loan thing? That is how I get all the recomened reading for SOTW. I usally have books from 3-4 different libraries. I get the books and then read that chapter for it so we are not going thru it as quickly as planned. I like having everything before starting the chapters.

If you go to the Usborne website you can find the links to the resources that they list in their internet linked versions of the encylcs. Perhaps on some of those sites you will find materials that you can use.

Dang! I would say you could read our blog for your history, but we aren't down into the Aztec and Mayan ruin areas yet!! I don't have any suggestions at all - but I hope you can find something interesting for her. History really is a fascinating subject!!

Are you already home and the one trip done? How'd it all go? Or should I just go to your blog?

I guess I remembered because your situation was pretty unique, even among the differences homeschoolers often have, and it intrigued me! I would've loved to do something like that!

We finished that trip and are getting ready to take off again. Last year, we pedaled 9300 miles through 19 US states and 4 Mexican states. It was such a wonderful experience.

Now we are gearing up to take off again - this time we'll pedal 20,000 miles from the Arctic to Patagonia. We will be volunteering with Reach the World to bring the world to kids in New York City. I am so excited about the possibilities involved here - I am hoping the kids will learn a LOT about their world. We will be linked to either 25 or 50 classrooms via the internet. Should be fun! (Now we just have to muddle through allt his stuff we have to do now...)

Wow, that's cool! I certainly wish you well! What a great learning experience for your kids! Are you going to use the same kind of bikes? With them behind your dh or whatever? Maybe I should just e-mail you and not take over this thread! The history that you will see will be pretty amazing as well! (There, that sort of tied it in! ;)

We got rid of hte triple. On our new journey we will have a tandem and two singles - that way the kids can switch between the tandem and the single. They want a bit more freedom, but this way they don't have to pedal by themselves all the time. We are totally planning to spend a lot of time at all the Mayan, Incan, and Aztec ruins!!
