I took the little quiz at the find your spot sight. It gave lots of places in Utah, and Washington, and low and behold it came up with Lancaster, Ohio!! I agree living in a hurricane prone area isn't great at times. Last year is the first year we've has such a real problem with it. Being hit every 2 weeks, with 3 of them, was way to much for us. It was so stressful, and of course not knowing if we would have a house to come home to really pushed the stress level up! We had a nursing 9 week old baby, and I had an unplanned C-section, so staying without power for over 15 days wasn't a good option. Temps were in the high 90's, along with 100% humidity, and rains. Hubby decided we should't take the time to empty the fridge and freezer when we left for the first one. Let me tell you - WHAT A BIG MISTAKE!!! It took nearly a month to get the stinchy odor out. With the second hurricane it was emptied as soon as we knew we were leaving. We were thankful to have stayed with family in Ohio!! If we do move to Ohio my hubby would be so thrilled. He grew up in Ohio and loves the changes of seasons, of which there is next to no change here in Florida regarding the trees. It has been hard trying to decide about a move, as I mentioned early I have nearly all of my family here in the town I live in. I pray GOD will make the answer clear when the time should come to move. Vicky, good luck with your decision.

I am not 100% sure...it has something to do with being able to make laws for the "common good" and morality (HA- what a joke these days)...I have never really seen a difference, but I know I have heard of many people speak of it (especially anyone with any kind of a criminal record at all because apparently in a Commonwealth such as PA it never dies whereas in States minor offenses kindof "go away" after a number of years or at least will not be brought up on a "quick search"- of course major offenses never go away anywhere though.) The other thing is that in the Commonwealth common laws are observed and they often are not in states...here you can apply for a marriage certificate and be denied because you are legally married to someone else and you never knew it- the government can declare you married if you apply for things togeather and things...I have heard of that happening a few times too...an example of this was a woman whom i used to work with. She was engaged but had not applied for the marriage lic yet or anything. In preperation and anticipation of their lives togeather, her and her fiance had "joint credit ventures" such as interest yielding bank accounts, car loans, and a home. Things happened and they split up. A year later the fiance contacted her because he had applied for a marriage lic to marry someone else and was denied. They had to file divorce paperwork.
Like I said, it has never effected my life, but I know some people want to move out of the state or will never move here because it is a commonwealth...

Well, I'll put in a plug for Iowa or Illinois (only two states I have lived in). I have always been right around where Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri meet along the Mississippi River. We have all the seasons in moderation and it seems that just when a season is supposed to change on the calendar it shows up right on time :D. Today is has been a beautiful fall day!

Aside from Des Moines and Chicago both states are pretty rural. There are smatterings of large cities throughout each (30,000+) but it doesn't take long to drive a few miles and see fields and pasture, timber and river bluffs. Everything is cheaper here, too. I have a friend selling their new 2,000 sq ft. ranch style home on 28+ acres for under $150,000. We just sold our newer ranch home on 2 acres a year ago for $50,000. The taxes in IL are generally cheaper but their schools tend to be poorly run, unless you are in a Chicago suburb. The school disctricts there are wonderful to work for (I have a brother who is a school psychologists near Chicago). What position would your husband be seeking?

As for soccer....my kids don't play but our city has a Rec Plex and a YMCA that has year round team sports with a hundred different leagues to choose from. There is a Civic Center right on the River that houses everything from orchestra's to plays to circuses. There is also a brand new library going up by the Arts for Living Center. Our city has about 30,000 people.

Now I'm off to check out that website and see where I "wish" I were living....

Vicky, my door is open if you ever get brave enough to come visit...

Hey! We're in the middle of harvest season for potatoes - what an awesome time of year. Once the harvester's have been in and out of the fields, people are allowed to go into the fields to pick up left over potatoes. We did this tonight (for the fun of it and to keep two boys busy) - you should see the size of these potatoes - some tiny, but some as big as footballs... another benefit of where we live. It rained earlier today and so the fields were still wet - what a mess but what a blast we had (especially Noah - when he found BIG potatoes) :D

Brenda, I found St. Andrews on the map. Sounds like a wonderful place!!! DH and I both took the quiz. I had two or three in Alaska on my first page; he had two from Florida, LOL! Actually, there were a few on his that I could agree with, most notably those in Tennessee and western North Carolina. One was only 20 minutes from the Great Smoky Mountains!!!

I took the quiz and it said that my perfect spot was MS, and TN. Thats funny how my own state came up at least 3 times on the first page.

Are you considering just moving upstate, Vicky? Would that settle the concerns? I lived through a tornado that caused a major phobia and I HAD to move to a house with a basement....well, God didn't let me move until after I had given that fear of mine to Him, but now I have a basement and I feel even better ;).

What is upstate? In MS everything is the same. No matter which part you live in . I have lived in the hills and in the delta. MS is pretty don 't get me wrong. Last night hubby wondered if we sould invest in our own generator. He doesn't want to move, from MS. The kids really like being close to Granparents. They also voted to stay in MS. I guess I am out voted. I guess we will be staying :(.

Maybe next summer we can plan a visit to some of your states. The kids want to see Williamsburg and Washington DC. I want to see the falls I lost its name, you know the ones in NY. I hate when my mind slips. Hubby wants to see the NFL thing in Ohio. So just maybe we can get to see some of the places. I might not get to move from hurricane alley but I can visit.
Kris I know just what you mean. Packing up trying to remember every important thing. Trying hard not to lose your mind. Finding yourself scrambling round because you just know that you have forgotten something improtant. Then you lose your cool and start fussing and crying because your scared. I know I did when Katrina came our way.
I was fighting a cat trying to fit two scared, big cats into one kitty carrier, because I couldn't find the other one. Trying so hard to make sure that I remembered my important safe with all my papers in. The car being so full you hardly had room to breath. With two cats a turtle and a child and everything elese that we needed. The truck full also with the dog and the other child and hubby. It was raining and I was bleeding from the cat, crying because I thought I might not see our house or horse again. I hated leaving him but we had no room and no where to put him. Just seeing my daughter the day we left was enough to make you cry.
She cried herself to sleep that night. The next day we did school, played games just to keep her mind off of him and the hurricane that was outside. We tried to get back home later that day the wind and rain still coming down but not as hard. We couldn't get there because of the power lines and the trees down. We were able to call a neighbor and see rode down and checked on him and the house. Waiting those 10 to 15 minutes for her to return my phone call was horrible. And when she did call back and report that he was ok and the house was still standing and looked ok to her and her husband. Was a weight lifted off of our shoulders. She slept that night excited because we were going to try to get to our house the next day.
So I know how you feel. I am glad that Rita turned away from you. I hope we don't get another one. The MS Coast and the LA and TX Coast don't need anymore hurricans this season. New Orleans don't need anymore rain.

I would vote to move to the western part of North Carolina -- It has snow (not much but if you want more it is a short trip to the mountains - oh and a short trip to the beach). We have different seasons. If fact the leaves are starting to turn beautiful colors now. Soccer is played a lot of here. The school districts are that bad. My oldest son loves school.

ps - I'm orginally from New York and NC is far better. Vicki it's Niagra Falls and it borders NY and Canada. It is something to see if you ever get the chance.

Vicky, in the meantime, we'll pray for you about it... There's still warmer places to be that would be safer than where you are now...

Thanks Tammy I couldn't thank of the name. I have been racking my bran trying to come up with it.

I think I might have to move by myself. My family really don't want to move from MS.

    Thanks Brenda.
I just had to tell my story about how I was getting ready for the hurricane. Usually weather doesn't bother me. I am one of the crazy ones that likes to watch the lighting. I was raised to respect the weather but not be scared of it. We always sat on our backporch and watched the lighting learning to tell how far the storm was. My daddy always has loved to watch a good lighting storm.
I really don't know why I acted that way during this one. Maybe because it was a 5 at the time.
My parents house where we went is 20 miles from us. During the storm we sat at the door watching the wind blow the trees almost touching the ground. (My mom and I took turns teaching that day.) I wasn't even scared just concerned for my home and horse. I guess being with my parents and family I felt that I was safe.
That would be the only thing about moving, I will miss my Mom and Dad and brothers and their families. We are a very close nit family. We may have our different views on things, but we always are there for each other.

Niagara Falls is really something~ if you get the chance to go see it~ you'll all enjoy it!
We've been to the Football Hall of Fame in Ohio also~ I believe it's in Canton~ it was a nice museum, if you like football (I'm not a sports fan, but my hubby loved it).
I wouldn't want to leave my family either~ I'd get too homesick for them. Maybe you can get them all to move!
