(learning language arts through literature) Has anyone used this? It looks really interesting and I am learning that not all is as great as it sounds. So, I am asking the advice of you great ladies.
I've used the old set with Rachael a while back. I really liked it at first. It was easy to use, but as I did more and more, I found other things I liked as well, if not better. But it worked very well for me when I was using it.
We used the Gold edition for high school for a year - I liked it but my daughter is REALLY picky about what books she will read and she wasn't all that interested in some of them.
We're using the second book now, and we really like it. We did the end of the first book last year (Joy was already reading well and didn't need all of the phonics in the beginning part, so we read through the word lists until we found words she didn't know how to read and started there.) We just started the second book a week or two ago, so I can't give you a very comprehensive review of it, but so far it is working very well for us.
I used this for a year and a half. I just loved the concept and was really trying to make it work, but it didn't for us. I would recommend using a supplement for grammar, if you use this.
It didn't work for us either We have used the 1st & 2nd book (blue & red book)I really loved the concept of this program too and thought it was working good for us, but I think it just did not work for my oldest whose in 2nd grade. We took a break from it for this year and now he is doing Sonlights language arts and we are really enjoying that. My K ds is still doing the blue book for LLAtL, but I will be switching him over to Sonlight next year also. You may want to look into Drawn into the heart of reading by Heart of Dakota publishing....that program looks pretty neat also.
I guess I am the odd duck as I have been using is for nearly 4 years and the kids really enjoy it! We have the OLD texts used - the spiral bound, black and white, 70 pg texts! I agree that more grammar is needed, though, so we have been supplementing the whole time - I try to work it in with what ever aspect the text is covering - so I get out the adverb worksheets when the text does adverbs. this year we are using them with Voyages texts by Loyola - we spend three weeks using the writing part of Loyola, then spend 2-3 weeks on a grammar element. That is when we use LLATL - to continue the writing when we do the grammar. The kids like it because it is quick and to the point, and the only thing they gripe about is the dictation/copywork on day one. I hope this helps!
Umm... I'm using the ones my sil gave me. LOL They're probably the "old" ones since her daughter is now 16.
He-he!!! You're using the FREE ones, then! Those are the best!!! Basically, they added more bells and whistles and then raised the price.
