Okay here I am Miss Laid Back and now I'm freaking out bit. I do this from time to time and then my free spirit kicks back in and I'm okay again. I'm freaking out because Grace isn't getting phonics and I need to teach sight words and she is going to be 5 Monday and she can't read but I need to teach her to and I find myself comparing her to my oldest who read well at 3!!! Someone smack me and send me back to my relaxed lifestyle!!!!! I know she will read eventually and it will just click one day but this is the one and only thing I freak out about. Once she can read I'll be fine again!

Actually when my kids were in kinder I stressed about teaching them to read. When our curr came in the mail and I looked at the reading program I realized I was stressing for nothing. We stuck with the program and my kids were reading the first day. It will be okay.

It's all in what your mindset is, I guess. Jeannie and her brother both read at 5,maybe 4, but I laid it on thick with HOP. I can't get relaxed where education is concerned.

Lol! Skivvies are what would come between me and my Calvin Klein's, if I could afford Calvin Klein's!

    Tiffany,

Don't freak out!!! My dd surprised me by "reading" or recognizing sight words at 3. Then surprised me again when she never really progressed and I thought I would be doing short vowels until college! LOL. She will be fine.

Thanks for all the smacks back into reality y'all!!!!!!

Seriously this is really not an issue that presents itself often. Anyone who knows me knows how relaxed and laid back I am about pretty much everything. But from time to time I get it in my head that she must read now!!!! But I know that is a bunch of crap!

I think I'm better now. See these episodes don't last long!

I know EXACTLY how you feel! That is how I was feeling the other day with my nearly 5 year old. I think we just all have those days -- and the goal on those days is to just make it through because tomorrow you will be feeling a little more like your relaxed self.

I find my problem with the phonics area, is because I have not decided on a phonics curriculum to follow so I don't feel the same progress I feel in the math area (Math U See Primer)....I like to turn a page and check it off the list! hehe!

Have you chosen a phonics curriculum? Maybe this would help ? Or maybe just a good nights sleep and you will feel better tomorrow? Just know there are many of us in the same boat from day to day.

Also, when in doubt, remember that you are doing a wonderful job with Samantha and you will also do great with Grace. :D

I remember when I started backing off the traditional style of work and started making up some of my own lessons. I wasn't sure in the least if it was going to work. I am finding that it actually works better because it is tailored to Ems learning style. Once I realized she was fine, I found more confidence in what we were doing.

great post! This is only my second year hsing, and I know I struggle with this. I don't worry so much about the academics as I do with behaviour. The is such a stereotype about the way hs child act, my kids instead act like the ps "heathens" that other hser's keep their kids from. It causes alot of stress around here that's forsure. This is definitely a year that I think ALOT about boarding school for my older 2 kids.
