Does anyone know a good book to teach some reading skills?

My 3 year-old knows all her alphabet since she was 2. And her little brother (2 year-old) knows all his alphabet too.

I'd like to start teaching my 3 year-old how to read if that's possible.

So if anyone would like to share infos on any good books or resources to teach a pre-k how to read I'd appreciate it :).

    Thanks in advance,
    Ning

Two books that are often suggested are Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons and The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading.

The advantage to trying these first is that the are both found at your local library. You can give them a try and see if you like either or not before spending money on another program.

Other options to add to what Amie said:

    www.starfall.com

    www.letteroftheweek.com

Also, Hooked on Phonics has some intro kits that can be bought at Sam's, etc.

At 3, my son did care about letter/sounds, etc. so I didn't do much more than trying to introduce it.

    LeapFrog DVDs are great too.

There are LOTS of full formal programs...usually in the Kindergarten sections of curriculum providers.

www.rainbowresource.com is a good place to look at lots of options. It doesn't include Abeka's programs which can only be bought from them.

Sing, Spell read and Write is great, too, and is VERY interactive with poster, flash cards, etc. Very engaging.

I taught my son with 100 easy lessons. I might do the same with my 2 yo, but I will definitely get sing spell read and write, and use that, too. It's a phonics-based program, and helped my first son with decoding.

I used 100 to with my boy, You can easily do it with both I think. My 2 yro has learned alot with them as well.

One thing somebody mentioned a while back was using dr. seuss books. the hop on pop book has a ton of the same things as 100EL just in a fun book form. If you kids will read it and listen they will learn a lot from them. The other books are the same way as well.

My boy seems to go in spurts some times the letters intrigue him, other times the numbers so we switch when his mood does as well.

I was going to suggest Dr. Seuss, too. Hop on Pop is a great place to start. We also used the Bob books (http://www.bobbooks.com/) with Joy. She liked them. I have seen them at Half Price Books.

We use Reading Made Easy by Valerie Bendt. You can usually pick it up for around $35. It is very gentle and thorough. My son loves it! I have not tried it with one so young, but if you think they are ready, then it is an excellent program.

I just posted on another thread that we are planning on purchasing "Rocket Phonics" from www.criticalthinking.com They list the ages as PreK-2
    The program is $99.99

This program is endorsed by John Taylor Gatto, which is what convinced me that it must be good!

I bought Reading Made Easy by Valerie Bendt, but my daughter is underwhelmed with my homemade flashcards, and the books "script." I am a big Valerie Bendt fan, but when my daughter saw me pull that book out she would always say "NO!" And she has already learned most of her letter sounds from Leap Frog videos - so I don't think that it's because she's not ready.

I would personally would not use any other books being that she is 3....100 easy lessons etc, etc, etc.

I taught my daughter to read when she was 3. I used Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. Try it out at the library first! I really loved this method of teaching reading.
