I just had to share this with all of you:
My son (4 1/2) has been interested in learning about maps and the states that comprise the USA. I have a huge map of the US on our wall and for a day or so we looked at the states and he asked a few questions...but never for more than a couple of minutes....WELL -- just the other day, he came up with a learning method that he loves.

He uses his laser NERF gun, to "shoot" different states...whichever state the "bullet" hits is the state I tell him about. In reviewing, I will say, "Hit ____, remember..this is the state that ______" He absolutely LOVES to do this!!! And he is retaining much of the info. Actually, every morning he has asked if he can play "shoot the map"!

My husband laughs and says, "Yep, we sure are teaching him the country-boy way!" Haha!
I don't think they could use that method in PS!!:D

OH fun! I never would have thought of this. My boys got wall maps for Christmas, we haven't put them up yet (what is the best thing to put them up WITH???) but I think this will be implemented here quite quickly :)

I have a purple staple gun. I use that thing to hold just about everything in the house. Didn't relized how much I use it until I had to take things off the wall.

Hehe, That sounds just like my boy too, We used his pop gun to shoot letters off the fridge. We have also been known to have skeet shooting when we memorize verses. After he gets one right I toss the note card in the air and he shoots it.

At least I am not the only one. :)

That's awesome ladies!!! My DH is on the "no toy guns" kick, but someday I'll convince him of how silly that is and we'll be able to have that kind of fun, too.

I would have never thought of it. Thanks!.

This is fantastic!! You certainly can't shoot NERF guns in PS! Your son will never forget this. Thanks for sharing.

This sounds like a lot of fun. Can I just say that homeschooling is the best. I love that we can do things like this. I'll bet he is learning so much and he is learning his way.

    Way to go!

Another thing to consider when hanging your map. If you can possibly position the map on a north wall then you can also incorporate the directions north, south, east and west in with it. North is at the top the direction you are facing when looking at the map; south is at the bottom so when you are facing the map is directly behind you; east is to your right and west is to your left.

Thanks for the additional great ideas! We are also thinking of shooting sight words! We use to "fish" for letters..and have done some "fishing" for sight words. I used a dowel rod, with a string tied to it and a paperclip at one end. I hid behind a chair and attached a notecard with a word on it..he had to "read" it to me.

I had to share the shooting idea with my ps teacher friends...they said they didn't think they would get away with trying it! What a shame!!! Haha!

we ahve done fishing for words, and creating sentences with what we have, I even bouth a game to do that, and Discovery Toys had a fish for letters game to teach upper and lower case letters, we had that in my "kit" box and used it wiht all three. I was an educational consutant for them back when I had one child.
