My 2 kids are both having trouble with spelling. Can anyone recommend a site or something that is for older kids. A lot of the one's I have found are too easy for them. We still do spelling tests, but thy both need help in this area. Any recommendations? Thanks ladies.
we use the word of the day on dictonary.com and the girls have to spell it, say it, and write a sentence using it.
Some ideas. How about Calvert Spelling cdroms or other cdroms from your library, like DK Spelling Made Easy. The Scolastic Dictionary of Spelling may come in handy. There is also Spelling Challenges for the Nintendo DS if you have that. Flooding them with several different resources all handy seems to work. You could just try a different program from what you are currently using, something like SWO (Spelling Work Out) or VFCR (Vocabulary from Classical Roots). Sometimes kids knowing the root of words helps them spell and sound out other words.
Nellie mentioned VFCR--Both my boys did some of that. It IS interesting to figure out the roots, and they thought it was okay. But as a change I think it'd be interesting for them!
Your welcome! Also, most of them are fairly inexpensive. So you can always try two together. I had troubles with kids not spelling well to.
Ds is 13 and started using Sequential Spelling this year. It is supposed to be helpful for dyslexics both children and adults. And no matter what age you are when you start you begin with book 1 and go from there. Ann
I am tackling spelling a little differently this year. I am teaching the 29 rules of English spelling usage, rather than doing spelling lists. http://www.lewrockwell.com/taylor/taylor79.html
Have you ever seen this link Garden of Praise Spelling Songs. I thought it was pretty neat. Scroll down to see more games. OKOK ...it's for younger kids But I liked it!
I was looking into the Sequential Spelling for my kids as well...I like the concept for sure. You might want to look at that...it deals iwth the root word, but all the words that go with it too or follow the same rules... Looks pretty cool!
I recently got All About Spelling. It is done in levels (not grades) and uses "tiles" for phonograms so its hands-on. My kids are younger BUT I know several online yahoo friends who use it for their older (often dyslexic but not always) kids. www.all-about-spelling.com All the levels are not available yet and I know some used Megawords (previously mentioned in a post) while waiting for level 3 to come out. My oldest is using Spelling Power. I got AAS for my other two. Rhonda C.
