nonstick cookware

    I have just tossed out several pieces of my Bakers Secret cookware. The coating was coming off, there were rusty spots. These were maybe 6 months old.
    I washed them as usual and didn't use anything but soft plastic utensils on them. I dried them completely before putting them away.

    Anyone else have this problem?

    I've used circulon for years & haven't had any problems.

    Happens all the time so I don't even bother with it anymore - I figure if I have to replace the stuff all the time I might as well buy it from the dollar store - at least then I don't lose so much money each time :roll:

    I don't use non-stick stuff any more, either. I've four cast iron skillets...two 10", one 8", and one 6". Plus two Dutch Ovens...one of them flat-topped with legs for cooking over a fire while camping, usually kept in our camper. My cast iron skillets do better than any non-stick!

    If we are talking pots and pans then no I don't have any nonstick stuff. I got rid of all of those when it started peeling off in my food. It was just gross.

    I had some non-stick stuff for cookies and pizzas and it was horrible. I bought the expensive stuff thinking it would last longer and I had to throw it out after a few months. So I bought the cheap, under $4, stuff and it lasts the same amount of time.

    We buy new baking sheets just about every 3-4 months. It all depends on how many times we make homemade pizzas and what not.

    Oh, I've seen that. I just didn't know what it was called.
    I might just start using disposable.

    I had heard that the non-stick is toxic if ingested. Can anyone substantiate that? I don't use it any more because of that reason. My MIL uses the rubbery stuff now (sorry, don't know what it is called) and she says everything just slides right out without greasing or flouring.

    I am getting ready to be done working for the night or I would look for an article on it now...but it is supposed to be a contributing factor in the early onset of dementia...I will look for an article on it later today (after I have hopefully gotten some sleep!) and I will post it.

    Yes, I heard that long ago.

    Rene, have you ever considered using stoneware for your baking? I'm a BIG fan of Pampered Chef stoneware! I have two loaf pans that bake bread beautifully, three pizza stones (though two are generic; I got one for a wedding present, and another I bought for $5 at a garage sale; the third was given to me.) Also a large bar pan, and several bakers. They are practically indestructable, unless you put one directly from the refridge into a hot oven, or place a hot one in cold water.

    I am so glad every one else has problems with the nonstick, My husband thinks its just me being to rough on them. Baker's secret lost its coating after the first use!

    I used to have a bunch of the stoneware. I really liked it. For whatever reason my pizza stones just started breaking in half while in the oven with pizza on them. I followed all the directions and everything.

    Maybe I can figure out what the problem was. The only thing I can think of was that it was gas oven that we were using that kept breaking them. In this house we have a crappy electric, maybe it won't break them.

    I will have to contact my friend and see if she has any in and try them again. She was telling me how they don't break unless you do something wrong so she made pizzas and the stone broke in half and she had this horrified look on her face. Then we both laughed histerically!

    Who knows it might have just been a bad bunch of stones. I will give them a try again. Thanks for reminding me about them!

    Oh, my!!! Someone else here said they had a defective stone once. Do you bake FROZEN pizza on them? If so, you need to put the frozen pizza on the stone and LET IT SIT while the oven is preheating. You need to do this with anything frozen. My one pizza stone I've had for over 12 years. It DOES have a crack in it, so I know it won't last forever. Pampered Chef stones come with a guarantee.

    Yeap, one pizza was frozen. My friend, who is a Pampered chef consultant, showed me how to bake them and boy was she made when she heard it crack. It was hillarious. (for me more then her)

    We broke 4 in 6 days I think it was. That is why I was wondering if it was a bad batch from the manufacturer. She is going to bring me another one when she comes this way. I will try them again and see how it works.

    I wondered too about the rubber stuff. I looked at it in Walmart. About $10 or less for the nice thick ones. It says freezer, microwave, oven and dishwasher safe.

    I would recommend Wolfgand Puck's line of pots and pans and cookware that is available...I believe at Kohl's, but it could be somewhere else. My mother got be a huge boxed set of pans and pots for Christmas last year and they are wonderful. They do NOT have any teflon or nonstick additive in them, but they are great. If something sticks all you have to do is put it on the stove for a couple minutes on high and it flakes right off. They also have a lifetime warranty. They're great!!!

    I use stoneware for a couple things as well. I've got a few items from Pampered Chef that are great.

    I am a Designer for Home & Garden Party and we sell the bakeware as well (like Pampered Chef). I'm told that it's made at the same place as theirs is, but my customers say our prices are a good bit lower.
    Jackie~ I'm the one who had the pizza stones break in my oven~ both a Pampered Chef stone and a Home & Garden one. And, both times, they were used properly. As a result, I do not push the bakeware, though I often think I should buy some of the other pieces and use them. We sell alot of nice pottery/casserole/serving pieces that I just love- they are so easy to clean, because they are glazed- they just wipe right out. I don't have a dishwasher (it's me!) so clean-up is important to me.
