I have a 9th grader that doesn't seem to be doing that well for some reason with the Apologia Biology. He's very smart, so not sure what's what. We just have the book, maybe I should've gotten the cd's?

Anyway, I was just thinking the same thing buddy! Where do we go from here?! What's your older one using?

I'll be watching to see what people say....aside from Apologia...

Well, I know your frustration....we just started our 3rd Science of the year.....Apologia is my new friend (I hope).

We started with Considering God's Creation which is good but not for us (at least at this time as newbies).

Got the girls SOS (3rd and 5th) because my youngest wanted science everyday (or so she said). Oldest wanted LifePacs but agreed to SOS because I wanted one less thing to grade and she hates science either way so LifePacs weren't going to make her like it any better.

They were doing fine with SOS but not "liking" it as much as I had hoped (even my daughter who wanted MORE science).

I had been interested in Zoo 2 but thought we had to start with Zoo 1 and we had no interest. Steve R. helped me realize that we could do Zoo 2 as long as we covered lesson 1 of Zoo 1 (avail on the website although I decided to buy the book). Since joining the Elementary Apologia yahoo group (which is wonderful for info), I SO WISH I had checked into it earlier...would have saved SO MUCH $$ and so much frustration for all 3 of my kids.

I had planned to use Apologia for middle & high school (assuming HSing is still working for us all ).

Anyway, you might check it out if you haven't already www.apologia.com.

    Another option is Noeo www.noeoscience.com.

    Good luck!

Oh yeah, Noeo Science, that's a good one. And Real Science 4 Kids looks good. My dd will be in 7th next year, and I'm looking at those two for her. But they're so expensive! :(

I'm not sure if they have highschool level say, for my ds. Gotta figure out something for him!

    Deena,

Why do you think Apologia Bio isn't going well.....is he a science-type guy....I was not a science kid. Did fine but can't remember a thing. I'm hoping to find something that doesn't leave my kiddos with the same feelings (even if they aren't all science-y kids, kwim?)

I think the book may be too dry for him or something.

On his last 3 tests over modules, he's gotten 54%, 56% and 70%. He's been GREAT in science up 'til now! He swears he's ready, I ask him questions, he does all the work.... I don't get it! :(

Like I said, I'm not sure what's wrong, because he IS good at science. I may start looking around and find something else, I don't know. I don't want him to get a complex and think he's not good!

    I guess I'm stumped!

I hope you can figure out a solution...I understand not wanting to give him a "complex". That's why we're trying this new Zoology. I'm hoping to an least get the oldest DD to got from "hate" to at least "tolerate" science so that when she get to middle school science, its not miserable for both of us. She's the type to do decent in any subject but I'd rather not deal with the whining drama of it

Hope you figure it out....maybe Steve could offer some study tips if you want to make what you already own work better for him.

I might not be much help . I find out about what they "should" or "want" to learn about and I go find all kinds of resources for it. I use the internet, library, any where I can get information. Our Science is pieced together to make it fit us. Like I have this book of experiments and my son goes through it and picks ones he is interested in and I put together the rest of the information. I guess you would call it a unit study or something like that. Sorry if I wasn't much help.

You know I think that might be what our problem is with Apologia too. We're using 7th grade Exploring Creation With General Science but I'm thinking now that we are getting past the creation of the earth stuff in get more into the "life" part it might get a little better. I'm kind of concerned about using the physical science one for next year because it's been so "boring".

Deena my ds11 is sort of the same way. I can review it with him and he will tell me everything but then I give him the test and he doesn't score as well. I've just learned to not panic over it. I know he's learning it but just doesn't test well. We're using abeka but it works for us. He enjoys it.

We're on the Elementary Apologia Yahoo group which doesn't include Gen Science. I'm pretty sure there is one though. Maybe search at the yahoo groups homepage or ask Steve R in his thread about Science....since he teaches Apologia at the online school, etc.

Yeah, we did A Beka Science for a few years, and my boys liked it. Maybe I should head there and look at their highschool science, thanks!

I guess the reason I'm stumped right now, though, is because he's always done well on the tests before this year! He has never had test anxiety or done poorly on tests!

I feel we're missing a step or something!

Is that what you're feeling Kris? That you're missing something that might make it work, but can't quite grasp it?

Anyway, maybe I won't do Apologia General Science with dd next year after all. She's loving science so much right now that I don't want to chance a problem with it!

Kris, like I said before, look at Noeo or Real Science for Kids. I think they're good for your dd's level, and maybe more "fun"?!

Boy, I tell ya, you think you have things figured out, then something like this happens and throws ya for a loop, huh?!

Yea, Deena, I feel like something is not there, like where. I am with you, my dd always did wonderful in science. Use to be her favorite subject and this year it's like the light bulb is off and wouldn't come on. I will check them out thanks everyone for the help.
