Ok, so a lot has happened in the last three days. DH went back to work from his most recent lay off... sort of. His boss asked him to do a couple of jobs this week, but beyond that we don't know. At least until April 1st, when this boss wants DH to completely take over one branch of the business. He'd be salaried at $500 p/w which is much more secure than the straight commission he was making before, but most weeks he could have made that in 3 days. And if he's running that branch he'll have a heck of a lot more to do. To be fair, though, there were other weeks when they had no jobs at all for him. But that was before anyone actually cared to promote that part of the business. Now he'll have an advertising budget and be able to actually promote the stuff. So really, the $500 p/w could end up being a really crappy deal. Then again, it's security.. AAAAAAAAhhhhhhhhhhh. To top it all off, a job that I applied for a month ago contacted me today (AT&T). They want me to come test on Tuesday. Starting pay is 16.50 p/h. BUT... they have mandatory overtime. And there is no calling in sick. My BIL works for them and used to do the job I'm testing for. He had to apply for FMLA days when he had the Flu. It was crazy. But if I do that even for a few months until we build a solid emergency fund, then DH can work with his dad in his counter top business. He won't commit to that right now because being self-employed means when you don't have work, you don't get paid. That's rough on a family. Even though he would most likely make a lot more than he's used to making (based on how much his dad has made in the last year), the security is not there. But if we have a few month's worth of living expenses in savings he can do that and know there is a safety net if need be. And then the director of Eli's homeschool academy called me. Their drama teacher is not returning next year. She knows my background and asked me if I'd be willing to teach there. It's a paid position, bringing home about $50 a week. In addition to the pay, you also get free tuition for up to two children. You also get free childcare for little ones. My middle son would be old enough to attend, so I'd be saving $55 a month on tuition. The "school day" is 12:30-4 on Monday's. So really, that's dang good p/h when you add everything up. What I'm thinking right now is this: If I get the job at AT&T, then I can work there until August, pretty much saving everything I'd make (after paying off the little bit of debt we have outside of my student loans). Then DH could go work with his dad at any point and know that we'd be just fine if they didn't work for a week or so. After August I would work for the academy and still add a little to our income without interfering with homeschooling. It sounds like a great plan... now I just have to get hired at AT&T. This could really be a turning point for our family. Not just to get us out of the no income rut we're in right now, but also help get us out of the low income rut we were in before DH was laid off. So my prayer, first and foremost, is that God's will be done. But I also really want the job at AT&T...lol.
