Welcome! Glad to see you hear as I am one of the "newbies" to homeschooling here on the board and do so love to hear the thoughts of those who have been doing this for a while. I have a 7 yr old (2nd grade), 4 yr old, 3 yr old and 2 month old...officially we are homeschooling the 7 yr old, but unofficially the others are in on the deal too

Twins age 7, you must be, like, a saint. Dude, I struggle with my 2 children born seprately. I'm impressed you kept going after the twins, you rock!
I'm Jackie, from central Ohio. I'm in my 7th "formal" year here, too! DD11, DD9, and DS5. We use a little bit of everything, and are starting this year into more of a Middle School curriculum for my oldest, who I swear just YESTERDAY was a cute little 4YO who came up to me and asked, "Mommy, when are you going to teach me to read?" Sigh...... Time's going by TOO FAST for me, LOL!
This is our first year homeschooling - well, first week really I'm just setting up our "classroom" - taking over a large corner in the dining room. My dd is almost 4 (next week) and my ds is 21 mos. We'll be having more children, just not sure about the timing. We are moving to Liverpool, England next September (who has very friendly homeschooling laws) for a year while my husband studies to get his masters in Investigative Psychology. We are using the K4 A Beka curriculum. So far, I really like it (only have done 1 official school day). I've been trying to read all the materials they sent me to get a handle on this whole organised teaching thing. My husband and I are very excited about homeschooling our children. My family is supportive. I'm not too sure about my husband's family. I know his mom (a retired elementary school teacher) is not at all - very against it. We haven't really told anyone else in his family - his father (the glue and the sanity of the family) passed about 7 years ago. I'm very excited about finding this forum! You all have such wonderful advice and I'm looking forward to getting to know you all better!
Jenny, may I suggest letting your DH deal with his mom almost exclusively when it comes to homeschooling. If she starts coming across negative, don't get into a discussion with her. Put it off as "his" decision, and tell her all comments need to be directed to him. If you are hs'ing because of religous conviction, he need tell her that he feels this is God's direction for your family. If she can't restrain around her, stay away from her until she learns to control her tongue in the pressence of you and the kids. But do not allow yourself to be drawn into it with her; that will only cause more trouble in the long run.
I understand the MIL thing. My 2 SILs are a ps teachers and I have 3 friends who teach. I didn't make a positive impression when I made my choice. We use a prepared curriculum and mix in some of our own stuff. I have never been happier with my decision. Good to here from you all. I like these forums, I am a member of a few and they help me keep my sanity.

My husband, bless him, has already stepped up and told her we've made our decision. She had been making comments to me about how much the kids love going to school and being with other kids and such in the course of everyday conversation. She wasn't overt about it, but I noticed. It drove me bonkers - mainly because I knew the cause of those remarks. Ben (hubby) is whole-heartedly behind our decision. He is a police officer in our city and has been called to many a public school because of (elementary aged, too) children bringing knives, drugs, or even guns to school. I love the idea homeschool. I do feel led by God and I feel God has given me a joy to do it. I get so excited when I go into a teacher supply store :shock: I'm such a dork :mrgreen:
Welcome! I teach my 8yo girl and 4yo boy. We are into our 3rd year here. I love teaching my own kids! I taught ps for 6 years and loved it. When my first child was born I noticed my interests changing and I really wanted to be home teaching HER! So, I quit and have been home ever since. I can see both sides of the argument of ps vs hs. However, to me, the benefits of homeschooling outway any benefits of ps (those few that there are).
More advice, Jenny.... STAY AWAY FROM TEACHER STORES!!!! They will bust your budget SO FAST, and most of what you buy there you'll never use. I'm pretty good about teacher stores. The one fairly close to my house isn't impressive. It use to be a really nice store when I first started teaching, independently run. But then, Holcombs took it over. There's still lots of nice stuff there, but it's lost its appeal. Plus I know (from experience!) that anything I buy there I probably WON'T use!!! I go there mostly to buy paper. There's another store that's mostly math/science, and I could spend my whole fortune there easily, but (fortunately) it's further away and I rarely get there. BUT... I drool all over all over my new RAINBOW RESOURCES or CBD catalogs when they arrive!!!
LOL! I promise I only bought a few things there - just basic supplies. I won't buy any of the curriculum for a while - since I just started with A Beka and I'll just follow their guidelines for a while :lol:
