Hi guys. I am new to PA but not to HSing. Looking to start a new and very active group with others in the Philadelphia area. I'd love to find others with the same interests.
Katrina~ Welcome to Homeschool Spot. This is an active homeschooling forum. I'm from PA, but not from the Philadelphia area. I'm in the south-cental part of the state, about mid-way between Harrisburg and State College. Good luck getting your group together.
Hi, Katrina!!! Heidi, Crystal, and Heather are all from Pennsylvania., but not from the Philly area. Well, am not sure where exactly Heather is from. I'm from Ohio. A bunch of us are hoping to get a group together in Philly in '07 to see King Tut's treasures!
I've been to Pennsylvania, does that count? Oh, and I hope to be one of the ones that makes it there to see King Tut's treasures! So that's two points for me, but lots more against, since I live in Washington State. Oh well, welcome!!!
Welcome - I am in Pa, about 20 min. from Harrisburg and even sweeter, about 15 min. from Hershey. Welcome to the board!!
Hi guys...I am bursting with ideas for a group. Even an online group where we could meet once a month or so. I have a gifted child who is looking for others to participate in "competitions" with him. We've been in Phila for a little over a week and I am getting a bit down as I struggle to find others who are as ambitious and eager for adventure as we are. I'd love to share my ideas if anyone is interested...
Hmmm, please share...what kinds of competitions is he looking for?? I am very interested in your ideas!
Well, for starters, we are learning about the importance of education, a well paying job, and budgeting. Besides just books, I want them to learn about real life. So, my oldest two want to "compete" against other teams. They are going to look in the want ads for job postings. We will cut a few out, draw from a hat and find out what job they have "prepared for". If the job asks for a resume, we'll make a mock one. After finding their weekly/monthly salary, they will then begin a house hunt. They'll budget bills, groceries, gas, etc all based on the job they have. In the end, whatever team has come out with money in savings and bills paid on time will win. THey will get mock checks and bills. Also, this may make them think twice when complaining about doing work. The harder the work, the better the education, the better the job!!!! Another thing they want to do is compete across country, so to speak. On a map they are given a location (all teams have the same starting and stopping point.) they then have to find the quickest route, calculate time and cost of the trip taking into consideration gas and hotel prices. They will be given a certain amount of money along the way and whoever gets there in the shortest distance saving the most money wins. These are just two of the things they want to do. I have many things I want to do as a group. We have fun just the 4 of us, but I know it would be a lot more fun with a LOT more folks. So, anyone out there want to play???
Katrina, those ideas are great! I think real life lessons - especially handling money - are very important as well. My kids are a little young to get that involved though. They are only 4 and almost 2. Maybe in a few years...
Boy that sounds like alot of fun to me. When do you want to start and where? PM me and we will think it over and I will go over it with the girls and see what they think.
