I posted here for the first time a week or so ago and was totally clueless about homeschooling my 9th grader who got suspended until the end of the school year.

Thanks to all the info everyone gave me, I went to my local library and checked out a bunch of books on homeschooling including Mary Pride's Complete Guide. I am so excited about homeschooling my son. I'm also considering homeschooling my daughter who is in the first grade this year. She does really well in school, but after looking at homeschool curricula, I realize how dumbed down public school really is!

My son really wants to go back to public school in the fall, but I'm thinking I'll keep homeschooling him through high school. I called the high school to see if I could borrow his textbooks, so I could keep him on their curriculum. The vice-principal flat out told me know, "it's against policy." Then he promptly went and cleaned out my son's locker.

So I've ordered a world history textbook and Saxon Algebra 1/2 which is was what he was using in school. I was if anyone had any recommendations regarding science and Literature/Language Arts textbooks?

Also I wanted to ask, do you make up your own assignments and tests to give to your kids? Or do you buy like the teacher's book that corresponds with the textbook?

The only teacher's book I've ordered is the Saxon Algebra 1/2 answer key and tests because I am very horrible at math and I absolutely have to have all the answers!

I just want to say what a great forum this is and I truly appreciate everyone's input!

Well, I see from your other posts that your son was in a Christian school. You might find out what they were using (even if they wont' let you use it). Some of the private schools use curriculums that are available to homeschoolers as well and you may could continue using them.

Rod & Staff is a Christian publisher that has excellent Language Arts materials. (I haven't looked much at their science.) And, a side note, the publisher doesn't have a site - this is one of the Anabaptist bookstores that they've authorized to sell their materials. :)

Answers in Genesis is a fantastic Christian resource for science.
I've also checked out this site for some fantastic science resources, including those offered by AiG.

I don't have a high schooler, but maybe those Christian resources can at least be a starting point for you. Be sure to check out eBay and other places for the best value!

Can you give us a little more information as far as what is to be covered for the rest of the year in the subjects you still lack?

WHAT? Aren't they required by law to provide an education to every child? Suspension does not remove that responsibility; I thought that school districts provided tutors a few hours a week to deliver assignments to homebound kids regardless of why they were homebound. In which case, the student would be using the textbooks. Seems to me that the vice-principal should be grateful that you are saving the district that expense and doing it yourself. Having said that though, he probably did you a favor; you will be better off with the HS materials rather than the textbooks. IMO, Textbooks drain the life out of even the most interesting subjects!
