Im starting homeschool soon. I posted earlier, and since then I did alot of reseach, looked into charter schools and different local programs and stuff, I read all the rules for my specific State (ATL. GA), and I posted on afew other forums.

I have one question left. If I were to Homeschool just me and my mom, Not in a charter school or any local program. Would I be able to get back into public school next year (12th grade year) for stuff like graduation, and the prom (Which my mom cares about much more than I do). And If I do go back will I have a normal transcript? And can I retake classes I didnt do well in last year to raise my gpa?

    thanks again for the help.

Not sure. It will depend alot on the high school from what I knew. Most people either go 9- 12 homeschool or high school. Not both. Contact HSLDA for that question.

IDK if this helps at all or not, but many "support groups" and co-ops that you might look to for enrichment on what you are doing with just "you and your mom" have graduation ceremonies and things. Also, if you still have friends at your local ps, and still continue to hang out and stuff, isn't it pretty likely that you will still go to prom as someone's date even if you aren't attending school there?? If the issue is the transcript, I know that there are groups here in PA that PA residents can join that "track" a homeschoolers high school progress and generate an official transcript that is not unlike any transcript that any ps would generate.
As I said, IDK if this helps at all...and I can tell you that here in PA it could be an issue with the credits that you would be "missing"...but I don't know the specifics on Ga. Good luck to you!

Each high school is different. It is entirely up to the high school and the relationship your public high school has with other homeschoolers. That is what is basically boils down to in truth.

The public hs has a specific number of *credits* they want you to attain in each grade as well as colleges.

So here is Scenario #1: You and your mom keep your own transcript, giving you the number of credits she assigned and then you try to apply to get back into high school, barring any local or state rules, it is ENTIRELY  up to them if they accept you back in that grade with that number of credits. They may not recognize your mom's recording keeping as a bona fide school (mind you its law) BUT that is completely another thing enforcing the law with the hs,kwim? You need to figure that out before...

Scenario #2: is more idealistic..The ps recognizes the recording keeping or transcript of your mother and accepts you back in with the full number of credits or adjusts your transcripts

Another option you have not mentioned is doing high school and college simultaneously:shock: There are high schools that give *dual credit*. Yes, yes, you do high school and already work toward whatever your degree is.

In addition, some schools (Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas) give dual credit AND have a public graduation ceremony for the high schoolers if your mom feels you need that.

Also, as far as prom....a cruise to a nice Caribbean island sounds more *aloof* (gives you something more to brag about) ROFL than a plain ole prom to me.:p 8)

Give your mom some more options and look into those high schools that have dual credit, keep your transcript so its *official* (even though it is if your mom does it) and have a public graduation ceremony for high schoolers....

Have you considered ALL the exhaustive possibilities?

Another down side to going back into high school is that you might want more credits for college, hence you want to take a bigger course load. The public high school may or may not offer that in addition to *advance placement*. Which is letting you graduate early or take a larger course load...

    Need more options????? info??

well that was helpful. Uhh... I'll check with my school first if they'll except my moms transcript. afew more question.... Would i have to do test or sumthing every semester to provide grades to go on my transcript? My state requires I take math, science, social studies, and english, But say if I wanted to add computer science, a foriegn language, and things like that to my transcript, I could do that right?

Sory for bothering everone with all my questions, I really did try to get the info on my own but I couldnt find much.

I'm in GA also. I believe that most ps in GA will not accept a hs transcript but I may be wrong. Your best bet is to check with your school district. BEWARE, they may not know very much either and may behave rudely to you asking. Yes, GA requires those minimal subjects but you can add just about anything you want to your curriculum. Most hs families go above and beyond what is required of them.

    Good luck with this adventure!

One more question... I swear this is the last one. If I decide to just homeschool through 12th grade would it be harder to get into colledge? Would I have to give the colledge the transcript that my mom made? If I do is there a chance that they wont except it?

Ok thats more than one but I appretiate all the help.

You really need to contact HSLDA and ask them your questions. What the districts TELLS you is often times different than what it will REALLY do. They may tell you how difficult it will be to come back, etc. and all the trouble with transcripts just to discourage you from doing it. In reality, they may know that they will HAVE to accept you back.

Personally, I would discourage you from HS'ing for just one year like that. I would suggest that you make a commitment one way or the other.

you can do community college now, but a university you may want to ask what you need to do, plus, check the homeschool law about that.

A lady at my church h.s.'d for a year or two and when the boy went back there were no problems at all. She said he really needed those two years away from school.

With dual enrollment- aren't there specifics to be met first??

Well, last time, I checked we have no limits on the number of questions we can asked here:razz: :D

The more you know, the better equipped to make life altering decisions..I for one, don't mind a bit your questions...

Yes, Jackie is correct...the hs will say one thing, but in reality as I mentioned before, the law would be different. When it got right down to the *nut and bolts* the high school can either respect it or not.

What type of college education are talking about? A tech school, community or advanced degree?

Most colleges welcome homeschoolers and the wonderfully detailed transcripts that are kept by their parents. The transcripts can contain so much more information than high school transcripts.

You can put in mentoring services and community help as well as your academics on your transcript and really personalize it. The college has so much better idea of what you can really do and the type of person you are.

To find out how the college would view your transcript, you would need to be in touch with the college.

This information is the same even if you were in high school;-) For one thing, each college requires a different amount of credits in different subjects.

You would have these same questions even if you were in public high school. Sometimes it's hard at this age to decide what you want to do versus what you end up doing, kwim?

Some prefer 22 to 25 credits or more and even less..

So don't base your life altering decision on any one college.

In addition, some homeschoolers hire a consultation service. This consultation service are homeschoolers (basicall young adults)who have been through high school and with advance degrees to help guide you through all the loop holes.

You pay them a consulting fee and they help direct you to colleges and high school that offer courses your interested in with the most number of credits and/or dual credit. They also know how long you can store those credits in case you need to space out your schooling.

I know we have them here in Texas and I know they are not limited to helping only local homeschoolers.

Their knowledge is beyond helpful. They know what courses each college in the U.S. offers and you can put together a degree with courses from different colleges by doing this online. Its amazing what they know and how they put this together.

By talking with these young people, it has helped me to realize that if we want the time to approach an advanced degree we have it. College does not have to start right after high school.

You have choices: It can start with high school, right after or it can wait a while.

So the question to you is : What type of college and/or profession?

Crazy, did you look into one of those programs through the mail, like Thompson Direct, that offer a high school diploma program of study?
The down side to that is it's not free.

a lot of home schooled kids go to comunity college and get credits for college and they are advancing thier home school learning at the same time. Especial in a particular area like chemistry or job relate class like metal shop or something like that, I don't know all the specifics, but i know some of the teens in my hs group do it.

Well I wanted to get into a four year university and I want to be a computer programer. I have nice amount of experience in programing (for my age) and my main goal is be a game programmer. If I cant get into a four year colledge I would probably go to a tech school and get a degree in game design.

I think the community colledge is a great idea because I love to learn about programming. I guess I'll contact afew of the colledges I want to attend after highschool before I make any more decisions.

    Those are excellent goals!!!!!!

Here is a link that most Texas homeschoolers have marked..HOWEVER, it applies to any homeschooler.

It lists the colleges that have accepted homeschoolers, gives them a rating system of how easy it was and in addition answers in HOW to do it..

    http://www.jsoft.com/archive/taffie/teens.html

    Have you seen this link?

Click on the link about *colleges that admit homeschoolers*. Right away, I saw the University of Georgia in Athens accepts them as well as two others when I just glanced at the comprehensive lists.

Clicked on the whole sight as it gives tips on how to enter, to preparing your high school to testing..

I know some universities in GA are very pro-homeschool. Kennesaw State University is one of them. You could try contacting the college you are interested in and see what they have to say!

You are very welcome!! Yep, it looked like a great university and I think it received a high rating of ease to get in.

Yep, the whole link for *teens* is good. Be sure to click on everything.......

My humble advice is to stick with one way or another.

Of course, you know I'm *biased*:p Homeschooling has it for me all the way because another huge , huge reason is the flexibility.

Most teens I know, including my nephews and nieces that are homeschooling teenagers love money:p .

They like the fact they can work, make money and do a full course load.

I dare say that hsing is harder in hs than ps for most devoted hsers because they want to get so much done...

    Keep us posted...
