Grace will be in kindergarten next year. I have never taught K before. What do you think? This is all I have.

    Math U See - Primer
Phonics - either Explode the Code or Abeka ( I haven't decided yet)
Handwriting - she will be doing copywork like her big sis (she already has really good handwriting so we may move on to some cursive)
    PE - ballet and tap

Am I suppose to teach social studies and science at this age? If so what do I use? I am totally open to suggestions!

Tiffany, it looks good. I know when I did science in that grade just did lots of hands on. The girls loved it.
Also, Social studies. well that could be anything you are teaching the other one just put it down her level kwim.

For Social Studies you could learn about national & religious Holidays & your community. Maybe do lapbooks for the holidays, and see if you can take field trips to the Fire Station, Police Dept, etc. for learning about the community.
For Science, maybe do nature studies. Learn how things are different in different seasons; take nature walks, looking at the different plants & animals; if you have a garden, she could help you work in it.

I think it looks great. I agree withthe others about science and history. Just teach her about her surroundings- the flowers and trees, the bugs, holidays, the community, etc.

A beka has a book called Community Helpers. It talks about police officers, pasters, etc.... Basically people who help in the community. It is very simple and has color pages and scriptures. You can teach all this without the book. It is very basic and great for her age. Take her on a fieldtrip to the fire department of police department. Teach her about enviromental hazards, waste, pollution, basic ecology. Go for a walk and discuss trash that is in the streets and what it is doing to animals. All this can be taught without a book and it is important and educational.

That looks great! I'm doing Kindergarten next year too. I'm using

    Horizons Math (K)
    Phonics Pathways
    Handwriting (K)
And a fun K science experiment book for now and then.

    Simple and fun!

That looks good! At that age I'd keep science informal with lots of silly experiments and chances for observations. Social studies...I'd just read books to her.

Can she join in with her big sis for History and Science? That's what I'd do.

Looks great!! That's basicly all we did this year, Math (Abeka 1), Phonics (Abeka Letters & Sounds K) and handwriting. It's nice to see you keeping it simple. I think too many people go overboard for K and 1st grade.

Thanks so much ladies for your imput!

    Much appreciated!

I was kind of thinking along the same lines as you guys for history and science. Maybe some lapbooks, silly experiments, and perhaps a little garden or something. I was thinking of a field trip to the police and fire stations too.

Sitting in with her sister this next year won't really be an option because Samantha's science will be on cd rom and the age differences are too vast. Sam will be in 7th.

    Again thank you so much!

Yeah, I would just go with her interests for SS and science. That will be the most meaningful at this point.

Sounds like a good basic plan. I would add some fun things in; some read-alouds and follow up any interests she has with some books, craft or a lap book.

That sounds really realistic. We used Abeka phonics for K and loved it. Actually, phonics is the only thing I like in Abeka

We are doing Kindergarten this year. We used Singapore math. I did a different letter of the alphabet as a theme each week. Some weeks we did the same letter twice. Everything else I pieced together with lap books and online resources. I'm a little anal, so I keep a plan for each week and a list of the books I used. If you're interested I can email you a couple.

We did the following field trips:

Apple Orchard just before harvest time
    Air Force Museum
    A Farm
A place that did gun safety (can't remember name offhand)
    Mammoth Cave
Cincinnati Zoo (we have season Passes)
    Boonshoft Museum
    National Parks
Veteran's Memorial (our town has one)
    Union Station Museum
Indianapolis Children's Museum (we have season passes)
    Germantown Dam

We were selective about our season passes, and those passes give us reciprocal passes at other museums, zoos, etc for 1/2 price.

I think you have a great plan! Deciding between Abeka and Explode the Code can be tough. Both are good programs.

    Great choices
I just ordered my stuff for kindergarten too...

    I decided on:
Hearts of Dakota's Little Hearts for His Glory

    And will use with it:
    Singapore Math
Teach your Child to read in 100 easy lessons
    The World God Made (science)
    History for Little Pilgrims
    Reason for Handwriting (K)

Looks good to me (and fun, too!)

We did K last year...for science and social studies we did the stuff mentioned but hear are a few more suggestions:

    • Address and phone number (state and country, too)
    • The 5 senses--hearing, smelling, tasting, feeling, seeing
    • Made sure we had directional phrases down, ie up/down, farther/closer, left/right, bigger/smaller--which container holds more/less, ect.
    • Ordinals (first, second, third...) This might be in your math book
    • Days of the Week, Months of the Year
    • The Four Seasons

Hope that helps (I'm a detail person--I love specifics, lol!).

JenL - we are doing the lett theme this year for prek altough yours looks much more organized than mine!

Spinning - I totally forgot about teaching our address. She knows her phone number but maybe I ought to teach her our cell numbers too. I plan to do days, months and seasons as well.

I was going to say 5 senses...I taught this in K during student teaching. I'm trying to think of the others.

I taught mine cell with a 1 & area code!!! I didn't even teach home number because I always have cell with me.
