DS will be ready to start 2nd grade math shortly and I'm not blown away by what I've seen. We just finished Using the Standards gr 1. It worked and he liked it, I just didn't like some of the things in it or how it was presented. They also didn't do much with time, money or fractions, which is what we will be working on the next couple of months. I've looked at math u see, math mammoth (growing on me) and R&S. He's a quick one to grasp concepts and move on.
Horizon! Go with HOrizon! hands down I like it for 2nd grade! I wish I had kept my kids all in it. But it is colorful and short sections keep from making it a chore. check out the inside at CBD.com and you will see what I mean. We love it! Let me say that it introduces, and moves on, each day, so its not one that continues the concept , but brings it back. if that makes sence? You get a new concept and review on several other things. as we progress through our 5th grade level I am seeing the different steps to franction work right there infront of us. We have addition subtraction , then reducing, Mult, and divis of fractions, and other numbers and GFC and LCF and then some pre algebra as well. they are in like 5-10 question sections and made to look colorful and easy so my ds enjoys most days in math once he gets going at it. Only think he hates right now is division so I alternate how many he has to do each day in that one, let him skip one or two, to keep him encouraged. But he can do it thats why I can do that! He has so mastered how to do division and so many other concepts with out cramming it into his brain this way!
I have heard wonderful things about Math Mammoth and Math U See. I am going with Math U See for next year for my dd. I have done Singapore and loved it. So, I may do that for my ds. However, I may still check into Horizons after what T'mom said. Oh...I never did answer, huh? Well, Singapore is inexpensive and works well with those advanced in math. You can go to the website and get a pre-test and see some sample pages. It is not colorful though. lol. That so far has been the thing that fit my advancing math student. I myself am looking for a change only because my dd is so visual and I think the blocks and dvds of Math U See will get her interest.
i think Math-U-See and Math Mammoth would probably be a great combination actually! I've got Singapore, Math Mammoth and the Key to...Series.
We use Singapore and Miquon. LOVE both. Dd has liked both. Both take an abstract approach and are not focused on rote memorization so much as learning the concepts and everything. Miquon doesn't look like much if you find samples online, but you REALLY need the teacher's manual to understand how it's taught. The teacher's manual is amazing and you really can't teach Miquon without it.
We use Saxon, but it does do a lot of review. If your son likes to move on, he probably wouldn't like Saxon.
I have used A Beka for the past four years. This year I am using BJ and Math-U-See. I am not going with Math-U-See next year. I am not sure about BJ.
Emma how is the BJmath set up? I was looking at themwhen I chose HOrizon cause I know the layout etc of Horizon and we are happy with it but I was wondering about the way it is set up... BJ math
Basically each chapter or unit covers the same thing. But I do not find Ems getting bored with it. It isn't so much of the same that is overly redundant. So the first unit or chapter might cover multiplication. The next division and so on. They just put the problems into different forms to show the student how to solve the problem by using different methods.
