Octoober is fire safety month (last week was the official week for it I think) Yesterday we got a real lesson in fire safty when we had a kitchen fire as I was preparing lunch. I was going to heat up some chicken strips on the stove, and let the oil start heating, but a fire cought and I was turned around doing something when the kids yelled FIRE! I thought it was a greese fire at first and just tried to cover the pan with a larger one to smother it, but it didn't help. I tried to use our little fire extiguisher but didn't aim it under the pan where I now think the fire started, probably from build-up on that pan that goues under the burner to catch drips. We had to call 911! We are all ok, and the only loss was our stove and some of my Coke Cola wall paper next to where the stove was. (my husband rushed home to see what was the matter and when he looked at the plug it may have been a short too).

So I just wanted to remind you all about teaching the kids about fire safety.:!: (FEMA has coloring books free for kids that they can also learn from--my oldest 2 had just got done doing this Tues.)

WOW! Glad that you are all ok.

We talk about fire safety all the time. The kids' windows are set so that if they can't get out the front door that they can unlock them and go through there windows to the neighbors truck/house. We drill them every few weeks about what the escape routes are and how to know if your door is hot and so on.

We have had our fair share of stove fires. This last one was interesting! We had flames shooting up around the pan. Good thing my husband already had the big lid out to cover it!

Glad you are okay. We went on a fire safety field trip last week. It is very important to know what to do.

yes, Trish and I went to the fire safety day in a near by town. It was fun and good for the kids and us too. Look in the newspapers and call local firestations. They will usually be glad to talk with and let the kids tour the station. Our local fire dept will do that with open hearts. Trish and I have done that trip too. Also the local EMS station will give a tour. Call yours.

Thanks all for the concern, I just ordered our stove. this one is a smooth top so no messy drip pans to deal with! The kids are still talking about the fire, I'm sure they will remind me for the rest of their life of it. (I still remember the one we had when I was little-- fire started from ash taken from fireplace my parents didn't believe me when I told them until our house started filling up with smoke.)
My youngest son stil woners if we are going to die from it.

Oh, Amy, I'm glad you guys are okay.
I bet the little ones will be worried for a long time, poor things.

You will like your smooth top. It is a lot easier to clean, and there are less expensive cleansers available now. Same as the pricey stuff they tell you to buy, but a lot less ensive.

Keep careful track of the oven, though, if it's self cleaning. Try to not let it get messed up.
I haven't used the self cleaning cycle, but I'm told it stinks up the house. You also have to keep the pets away from the fumes.

Glad all is well....and that you get a new stove!

I didn't realize that about the fumes, Becky. My dh just did that cycle for the first time on ours (several years old) and it did stink when I came home from work. It smells like the first time you use a heater...like paint heating up for the first time, kwim?

Our local fire department has a traveling fire house to teach kids what to watch for concerning safety and then they get to practice from laying on a bed, seeing/smelling smoke...they crawl to the door to check for heat (which it is hot when they touch it) and then they crawl to the window, open it and climb out. Way cool!!! 8)

    Bad Luck

You all aren't going to believe my bad bad luck this week, First the fire burnt up the stove:neutral: now I just went to take the clothes out of the dryer and the clothes in the washer to put in the dryer, and the clothes were still sitting in water, my first thought was one of the kids knocked the button and shut it off, but I put it on final rinse and spin and it did a little something, but still the water isn't draining, and I think that the motor is shot:shock: I can't believe it, 2 downed appliances in one week :!: I am starting to think it could be the surcit braker or something getting surged, I'm not smart about things like that and dont know if things like that can happen. My husband is a good fix it man but not electrical.:-?

Well, you could get a washer like mine. You'd end up saving money, plus since I posted what you can't use you won't ruin your clothes like I did.

We think its just the pump. We will have to call a service man asap (just not sure how soon that will be) We have had trouble with that machine since we have had it, we have had the repairman out 3 times but its been for the dryer. Now the warrenty is up. We didn't go with the flat top stove however we felt like that sales man was trying to swindle us. So we got a referbished one somewhere else, its like the other one we had. The odd thing is there is a light in it that doesn;t show through the front, because the door of the oven is solid, no window, but the light is always on, like the fridge, ther is no button to turn it on or off, but I did figure out its like the fridge because I finaly found a button on the side that makes the light go off when you shut the door. ...... Wierd huh. (I did figure out that it did once used to have a window in the door and it probably shattered because I found glass in the part under the oven where you can keep pans)
