St. Patrick's Day always reminds me of this story and I thought I would share. 5 years ago this week, we made the decision to pull our oldest two children out of ps (they were 6 and 7). Being the deligent new hs Mom, we were doing story starters everyday as a journal activity. On St. Patrick's Day, I told them to write using the story starter, "If I had a pot of gold, I would....." My dd7 wrote about buying a castle and being a princess.

What my son (6 at the time) wrote made me cry and changed our family. We were young and busy with 3 kids and dh building a career. While my dh and I had both been raised in Christian homes, we just did not have time for weekly worship. We did the obligatory Easter and Christmas services. My son wrote, "If I had a pot of gold, I would buy a church so I could learn about God." As you can imagine, we started attending Sunday services the following Sunday.

That is hands down the sweetest story I ever heard in my whole life! I will be using your story in one of my children's sermons one Sunday soon. Thanks for sharing it here. You have touched my heart today. I love kids and work with them in our church on Wed. and Sundays. I always tell them how blessed they are to be in church and how some kids never get to come. Your son brings my point home in a very honest and real way. He is wise beyond his years. Beth

I still get a little teary eyed when I tell that story.

I can point to 4 times in my life where I thought, "OK, God is trying to tell me something and I need to listen." This was one of them. As my sister says, "sometimes God has to use the big stick to hit you over the head with!"

Beth, feel free to use the story with your Sunday School. My minister said he would save it until he was somewhere else since he did not want to embarrass Blake, but I think it is too sweet to keep to myself.

Thank you. I was going to pm you to make sure you didn't mind, but I thought it would be okay since I would never use names or tell where I know you from. I told my sister the story (she is our youth and education minister) and she loved it. She agreed that our children at church as well as our adults need to hear it. Thanks again. Beth

I read that in Ireland, St Patrick's Day is a religious holiday for some.
