I saw this posted else where and I thought what the heck. Why would you supplement a complete program? I am not just taking about one person here and there I mean a lot of people are doing this. Example Supplement MUS with Saxon Singapore with Saxon Rightstart with BJU Rightstart with Singapore MUS with Singapore TT with Videotext ( now that seems crazy to me, the price of both of these is outrageous!) then they supplement with Miquon, Horizon, all of them. Now I can see buying some extra workbooks/worksheets, but buying 2 full curriculum's for one year. That seems bonkers to me. Math is pricey as is why would you make it even more so? :? I think my son gets enough math with one program, he would hate me if I made him do two a year. So, could someone please try to explain this madness to me??
I don't. My eldest uses Alpha Omega Lifepacs - and even though we've contemplating changing for next year, she said she'd rather keep it. It's nicely paced and she's doing well...why fix what ain't really broken (yes...know...bad grammar). My youngest uses MUS. Still don't supplement, I'd rather him concentrate on Mastery of his lesson and not distract him (he'd easily get distracted). Now...I do try to find real life examples and make non school moments into teachable moments so they can see how Math is a necessary life subject. Also, I like playing math games and stuff with them, games that use adding skills, subtracting skills, counting skills, etc. HTH.
We use Singapore and Miquon together, I also supplement with base 10 activities, other worksheets as needed, ect.
okay, I don't really understanding supplimenting either, cause I buy one boxed set usually and if I need to do anything I get one of those cute little Scholastics things.. well then this year came, Horizon stands alone to me so the most suppliments are using visuals of mnms, jelly beans or what not and that sort of thing... scratch paper stage is where we are with my two homeschooling kids. For History I bought a lesson book that I knew I would need more on because Ilove that there are videos and so many books on US history use as well... I guess the closest we have is my dd is doing Algebra1 and it is not always easy for me to explain it in a way she understands so we watch math videos online and get the clues we need together sometimes. If nothing else she will go out for math next year because I see my limitations there. OR we will use Video Text. I am not one to do more work than nessacary. I guess I am one of those who thinks that more work is not going to help my kids, if they get it it willbe with more work on my end and less on thier end in the long run. IF they don't get it, I am not teaching it right.... So if I supplimented a teacher text that would be a good idea maybe? ALso if one bought a book then realised too late that it did not cover certain aspects, that would be a reason to suplement as well wouldnt it? I am happy with my Horizon for grade school age, and wish they went further!
Teacher mom, that is my thoughts also. I don't consider adding a few things as supplementing. I just am so puzzled at the whole thing. It is not just math they do this to. It is everything. So, lost.
I sometimes use extra activities to reinforce skills, but never two curriculums at once. I couldn't afford to buy 2 curriculums for 3 (soon to be 4) hs'ing kids.
I use Singapore, Key to and Math Mammoth but I'm not following the three curriculums. As we cover one thing we simply go to the curriculum that covers something best. Singapore for basic operations and word problems with MM for extra practice and Key to...for specific topics like fractions or decimals.
I do the same as dawninns. And I teach it in different ways too. I think it's important dd learns to do it more than one way which is why I went with what I did. Both Singapore and Miquon are not expensive and both cover things at different times but teach in an abstract manner. The base 10 set came with an awsome activity book so we throw that in there, plus I use different games, cuisenaire rods- which we don't use right now, ect.
I guess I'm supplementing, but only because I'm dense and make poor curriculum choices. I use HOM for fact practice, then Houghton Mifflin for regular math. What I should have done- instead of panicking- was to stick with BJUP math. I was worried it was too slow. See? I'm dense. And I'm not a good judge of curriculum.
I use one program. However, I will supplement with worksheets or what have you, if my child needs extra work. I don't supplement an entire program...just things that I think need extra attention.
We generally don't supplement. My kids all use Horizons. My oldest has done Book 1 of Keys to Fractions (and we have the other books waiting in the wings). This was more to break up the monotany of Horizons for her and hone a particular skill. She could have done without it but it was a nice break for her. If I added anything else to my 2nd graders math, she's freak out. As it in, she generally only does half the problems per lesson anyway. She dislikes math but does very well with it. Half of each problem group is plenty and if its not done correctly, she knows she'll do the other half. So far, she hasn't had to do this. I will add some games soon for multiplication but I don't really see that as supplementing....more like cementing concepts . My son is almost finished with K....another 15 lessons to go. I might so some extra activities before moving on to Horizons 1st grade but honestly, I think he's ready to move on. My good friend Kim (missinseattle) uses 2 (as she mentioned above) and I like the way she does it, but it wouldn't be a good fit for me working with 3 different kids, 3 different levels and 3 different learning styles. I do better tweaking one program but might have to adjust down the road. We do have manipulatives that we might add to "spice" up concepts, etc.
I use only MUS. However, sometimes for holidays I will print off worksheets from the internet that have decorations. For some reason my daughter hates to do a regular worksheet but if it has holly wreaths and Christmas trees on it it is suddenly fun. Go figure.
Like Tiffany, during holidays I will find word problems relating to the holiday and at their skill level, even if I have to make them up. Other than that, both of mine use Saxon. One in a while, to break it up, I'll supplement with some units from "Real World Math" workbooks published by J. Weston Walch. I have three: Math of Food, Math of Building, and Math of Sports. We also do math related games, and lots on 3-D shapes. Carol
OH well we do play math games and stuff but I don't really cosider that part of school , unless I need a break and he needs work on school time,
We supplement with fun math workbooks that I buy at the Dollar Tree or Kmart. Kiddo loves the cartoon characters (makes math fun). We also do very practical math in the kitchen (outside of regular school time).
We use Horizons for math. I bought the manipulatives that go with Saxon elementary math and we use those with the Horizons. I will occasionally find and print out worksheets for added practice or to give a different approach if needed.
No. My son uses a MCP workbook and I have the miquon books (and cuisinare rods) for when he is struggling with a lesson. He did NOT like the Miquon workbook at all. We also use lots of other manipulatives.
I do not supplement. We use MUS, and I used Horizons last year. I do think that Horizons was in some ways more thorough in covering lots of different things. They incorporated more money in and more time in and things like that, but that is something that I easily do on the side, not something that has to be part of my math curriculum. I will be honest and say though that sometime I am afraid I will forget all about it and then it will never be taught. Will I have a teenager who doesn't know how to tell time!
Don't worry - I'll be lucky to have a teen that isnt in remidial math. She hates math so much and it is a struggle most days. I've tried lots of things to make it more fun but nothing works. If she just gets basic Alegbra down by the time she graduates I will be happy.
