Ok ladies, I need some self reassurance! We were recently at a HS display where I picked up a DVD about HS'ing. While I feel confident that I could HS my kindergarten daughter. I am not so sure about the latter years of middle and high school. I have a high school education with some college. I don't have a degree in teaching (or anything else), only work experience. I'm just wondering how many of you have the same or if the majority has some sort of teaching certification?

High school graduate here with some college and a handful of classes on Early childhood education. I used to teach Pre-K.

I have no teaching degree or special certification.

You can do it! You will learn along with them and figure out what is best for your children. The teacher's manual can be helpful, but your common sense goes a long way.

High School... some college..... specialized degrees in Webdesign/Webmater.... and I think a couple other specialities - LOL.

I was scared - my son starts Alegbra this year little by little and it's scary for me - exciting for him. Go figure... but I did tutor Alegbra in high school so I'm not as worried... and like ABall said... there ARE teacher manuals!!

Highschool and some college here also. Most of my classes in college were English, Lit and history. I had planned a major in English Lit. Never happened though lol.

I don't think I could teach middle school if we were to continue. We aren't continuing next year and I have noticed some huge holes this year now that we are getting ready to put her back into school. Probably not a big deal if we never planned on putting her back in school, but they are a big deal since we are. SO now we're playing catchup in a few areas.

Thank GOD my mother is a 2nd grade teacher I'd have no clue what the girl should know going into 2nd grade- or what she should be doing really.

I have a college degree but it has nothing to do with teachng kids. So that doesn't help me much. I am planning on using lots of helps. Like the teachers manuals, the lessons with dvd or online, and my family who happens to be filled with microbiologist, and english teacher, a math man, and a parametic who knows way to much about our bodies. I think with their help we can figure out just about anything.

I have an AA in general studies (just all the gen eds that regular colleges make you take) and 3 years at a University. But my major was Theatre, so take that with a grain of salt ;).

I'm also a substitute teacher for the public schools, and I can tell you first hand that even certified teachers are using teacher's manuals that tell them what to teach, when, and how.

    Don't worry about it. Really.

That is our view entirely. My businessman dh calls it "outsourcing" their education. I'm a bit different in that I have a bachelors and masters and used to teach high school math and physics. So that stuff doesn't phase me. But art, writing, foreign language, fine arts?!?!? How does one do that?!? So, they take art classes, and piano lessons. They use Rosetta Stone. They volunteer at the local national park.

I don't believe one person CAN teach it all.

    Just my two cents.

I've got you all beat! High school and NO college! :)

Most of us don't have teaching certification mommy32. What's needed is curiousity and flexibility and you don't need any form of higher education to get that.

    Me too...just high school.
I use teachers manuals where I need to (like maths ..LOL)
Its a learning experience for us all.
We cant really "outsource" as much as we could back in Oz (where all the family are)
Certainly not a lot of "help" or love for home schoolers over here...we go it alone

I have high school and 1 semister of college. I am learning right along with Elijah. We are doing some math that I didn't understand, let alone know how to teach. We use the A Beka dvd's and the teacher taught us, then we worked the problems until we understood and went on. You can do!!!

Oh yeah? Well I'm a high school dropout with a GED, so :p

(haha, to be technically correct I shouldn't even say "high school" dropout because the last grade that I actually earned a pass from was grade 8 - while I was registered in both 9 and 10 at different times and different schools, I rarely showed up and never earned any credits. My teen years were a ..... bit of a mess.)

    Well said! :)

High school graduate and then I went to a paralegal school where I took law classes and graduated with a 4.0. I loved college!

In our hs next year I will have a kindergartner and 7th grader. I plan to hs all the way to graduation.

Some college, mainly in teaching and Travel related certificate type things, but I have not completed either, I do have a good idea of travel related, geographical stuff, and history of flight so that helps a bit.. and the creative stuff we learned in teaching classes was good. I want to continue my education here eventually and add some more!

College degree --- started as a biology major but ended up majoring in English with minor in Classics/Logic/Philosophy. I was an English teacher/department head for 5 years on the secondary level. I took a couple of graduate level classes.

My husband's an electrical engineer; so we figure between the two of us, we have the major subjects covered. :)

I tend to believe, however, that as long as one is willing to research and learn themselves, then they can usually cover the ground they need to with their kids.

That's what I believe, too. I have a BS with a double major in Psychology and Sociology. I almost completed a minor in Children's Ministry, but didn't need a minor with a double major. It would have required an extra semester, another class, and internship. So, I ditched the minor. :) I planned to go straight through for a Master's and PhD, but met Dh and decided marriage and family was what I really wanted.

With a degree, I still learn along with my children, especially history. I believe if you can read, you can learn!
