When my older two were small we would go to the commisary on the base and they would pick something like kiwi for their treat over a candy bar and I learned back then what a big difference in price there was.

I've not seen the prices of fruit as too high right now. I bought an 8 lb. bag of oranges for 4-H snack, and I think I payed $4.99 for it. I also bought grapes also for 4-H snack, and paid I think $1.19/lb.

Our fruit prices are pretty high at the grocery store. We are members of a produce co-op, so most of out fruits and veggies come from there. We usually run out of fruit before the next co-op day, so sometimes, I will buy a bag of apples. We half a share with our neighbor, so my half is $12.50. We get A LOT for that $12.50!

How about some bean dip? ;) (a play on a thread awhile back...)

I LOVE strawberries, oranges and bananas dipped in chocolate---especially in white chocolate!

Actually, I was thinking about chips with the bean dip.... I've handed out plenty of bean dip since then!

Cream cheese and almond ball... with crackers.... This thread is bad for me. Where's the strawberries? Those go well with BOTH cream cheese AND chocolate!

No kidding, the grocery ad said 2 little containers of blueberries for $7!!!! Strawberries were 2 for $5 But then this fall nuts for baking were about $9 a lb.

No wonder most people are putting on the lbs. its hard to eat fesh and healthy stuff if its more expensive.

I'm assuming no one has bought anything much on E-bay................ mostly because everything else is so high for the necessities.......... (wich effects one that runs an E-bay store ;) )

You laugh...but that is so scarily true it almost feels like conspiracy!

Like if we weren't run down and sick all the time then the drug co's would have no where to pedal their wares!

Oh...btw...do you have an Aldi near you? www.aldi.com we have one...I talked the mgr and I go on the day when they first put out the produce...and it's nice and fresh and good quality stuff. Ours is really a good Aldi. I can get Strawberries for $1.99/pint, vine ripened tomatoes for $2.49 for 20 oz, A HUGE bag of apples for $2.99, bananas for .39 a lb...etc...you do have to buy it on the first or 2nd day...but we've always had good luck.

We also have a bulk place aroudn here that is ridiculously cheap called "Produce Junction"...we went in about 3 weeks ago and spent $45 and could not fit everything in our fridge! I want to do it again, but I need to find someone to split the stuff with because it is just too wasteful not to be able to use all the stuff before it goes bad. I'm thinking of relearning the fine art of freezing and canning so I that I can put up some of my own stuff...heck if it's gonna be that cheap!

I would look around and see ifyou could find a coop or something like that! :D

Krista, no Aldi's here wish we did, I love alot of there things there. Miss the store.
Wow, Jackie that is good price.

Yesterday I paid 1.99 a pound for grapes.
ornages are 99 cent a pound for small ones.
bananas are 59 cent a pound.

think I will stick to my choc. they tell me it's good for my heart. Unless someone is lie to me. But, I can't see why they would do that, can you.

I find that sometimes Target (if you have a Super Target near you) has cheaper fruit than the grocery store. You just have to watch prices. I think I'm going to look into buying more at Sam's, too. We are buying more in bulk as our children get older, so I need to compare their prices. I loved Aldi's when we lived close to one. There really is no competition here with only one grocery chain. At least their prices are cheaper than what I was used to.

I'll be picking strawberries in a a few months! I also buy a 30 lb. tub of sour cherries (pitted!) and split it with my cousin. And I pick apples in the fall to make applesauce and apple butter with.

I have not enjoyed the raised prices of the produce either. When we were in FL, there was a big flea market and they had a whole area with produce. The prices were pretty good and I would shop there pretty often.

It's too bad we don't have anything like that here.
