My friend's father is going to be home alone for a week while they go on vacation. He's not into traveling very much anymore. I am on the volunteer to bring him dinner list, and she said that he likes turnips. I've never even eatten a turnip, and for sure don't know how to prepare. Does anyone have any turnip ideas?

I will keep an eye on this thread. I have never used turnips before and am interested in seeing how people cook them.

I've only eaten them raw, right out of the garden. I was never brave enough to try them cooked. I can ask my mom if no one else has suggestions.

Raw is the only way I've had or seen them as well. Sorry!

    yuck, raw turnip??

(okay, i suppose i shouldn't knock it until i try it)

I love turnip cooked - but I'm pretty basic in the kitchen so I don't have any fancy recipes for ya.... all I do is peel it with a knife, chop it up, boil it until it's soft, then mash it like mashed potatoes.... the kids like to eat theirs with butter on it, I like mine with ---- okay, don't be grossed out because I put it on practically everything I eat --- ketchup. :p

Oh, my MIL often does hers mixed with carrot - turnips and carrots are cooked, then mashed together.

Someone will prolly come along with a fancy recipe for it...

Now you have me wanting turnip for supper.

I usually cook and mash them with a bit of cream, a bit of salt and some brown sugar. The brown sugar makes all the difference.

    Two other things I do...
-chop them and add them to stews
-chop them (as well as carrots and potatoes) and toss them with olive oil, salt, garlic and oregano and then roast them in the oven.

My MIL mashes them with carrots and they're great. They're both sweet and compliment each other.

    Allrecipes.com has a a bunch of recipes!

All this turnip talk has me itching to cook some! LOL I need to go out today. Perhaps I will stop at the fruit stand and see if the man has turnips.

Thank you everyone! I've got a starting place now. I'm going to head to the grocery and see what I can wrangle up and my family will be guinea pigs tonight!
