I got a magazine from Scholastic yesterday. One of the stories in there was of a teacher who let her K's paint with a dead fish, using it to make prints!!!! The kids were to paint its side, then press it on the paper. There's no way....
I have seen that before on a show called "Donna's Day" that used to come on PBS. I don't care to do that but more power to anyone who wants to do it.
My undergrad degree was in marine biology and before we dissected our firt fish we did make prints of it. Trust me this is not as gross as the dissection! Not only is it an artform but a very useful study tool as well. We used the prints afterward to check measurements (length of fins) etc... I still have mine in a small frame. This would make a cool Father's Day gift if Dad is into fishing!
....I have a cousin with a degree in art (she is now a professional glass blower). When she was in college she made a print for my dad and he proudly displays it in his office...right next to the mounted deer .
I had an old kids craft book given to me and first time I fliped through it I came across a photo of a kid doing that fish printing. :???: at first I thought oh it must not be real, but it was!! *yuck*
I have a thing about touching fish, dead or alive. When I go fishing someone else has to take it off the hook for me. No thanks! I have done painting with worms before with the kids. I wouldn't do anything like a fish though. Many kids have them as pets and I wouldn't want to confuse any of my kids. I also don't want them to get the idea that that is what we do with animals.
Actually they did that in a class my dd took. She made a "eeuuuwwww yuck!" face at furst, but finished the painting with no problem. The kind of fish used are bigger than goldfish or something like that, that kids would have for pets. None of the kids in that class considered it something to be done to fish or other animals. And they were still "fresh", not nearly as yucky as I would have pictured it! It wasn't as bad as I thought either---better than eating them imho (I do NOT like the taste or smell of fish)!!!
He he! You put them in tempra paint and let them slither around on the paper. There are other versions too. You can just dip them like a paintbrush as well.
I'm callin' PETA. Jen, that's nasty. What's next, cockroach painting?? Let them scurry through watered down tempera?? How about frogs hopping from shallow dish to paper, to shallow dish, to paper??!
I'm actually all for animal rights. I can't hunt because I would start crying and feel bad if I shot something. I don't even want to tag along with the hubby because it disturbs me. I'm not against hunting, I just can't do it myself, I don't have the heart. For some reason I didn't think of that when we were doing the worm painting. We washed them off and put them back in the dirt when we were done. No harm done I don't think. Hey Becky, are you by chance a vegetarian? Anyone here one? I ask because I've been looking for some good healthy vegetarian recipes. We're not vegetarians but I don't eat very much meat. Not as much as the hubby at least.
Frogs I put in the animal category. I could never do that to a frog. Cockroaches I put in the "icky and insect" category...yuck. Don't care what really happens to them.
