I never knew the difference between ink jet and laser printers, well except the price difference. Well I so want a laser printer!! I just need to figure out how to convince dh that I need it.
For what I pay in cartridges, I could have bought a really nice laser printer already.
I mean to get 2500 pages out of a 1 toner that is about $45. WOW!! Now I only get like 300 pages out of a $30 cartridge.
Well I really got some convincing to do!!!
Do any of you have a laser? What kind do you recommend?
    thank you for any tips.

I don't have a laser, but if you put your setting on "fast draft" when you print, it saves ink usage. :)

I use fast draft for everything unless it *has* to be better looking. :)

I do not have a laser printer. But I do set my printer to fast draft. It does help. My other printer had a setting for ink saturation. I do not think this one has that setting.

I do not have a laser printer. Like you, I wasn't real sure on the difference. Like the others have mentioned I use fast draft. I use it for almost everything. When you have new ink fast draft looks great anyway.

I get way more than 300 pages out of my ink jet cartridges , BUT only if I refill myself. The cartridges only come with 1/3 of the ink they will actually hold. I refill myself ($10 for enough to refill 2 1/2 times) and the ink lasts much longer. I also use the fastdraft option. Unfortunately, I have never been successful with the color refills.

I have a laser! The difference is amazing. The model we bought came with a 1500 (it actually produced more like 2000) copy toner cartridge and lasted us 6 months with lots of reckless printing. I just bought a 2500 copy replacement for $80 but haven't had to install it yet.

Our previous printer was a Lexmark. It cost about $60 for brand name moderate yield color and black cartridges and over $90 for full yield color and black cartridges. The full yield cartridges would only last a couple of months.

Our laser printer is a Brother DCP 7020 monochrome all-in-one (scanner and copier as well). It was selling for $229can but we watched the Staples flyers and waited until it was on sale for $129. I also cashed in some airmiles for a $50 gift card to Staples and so it only cost $90 after tax.

I searched for it on Google and found it as low as $150US at Amazon.com and cartridges are only $41US. I did a lot of research before we bought and it had lots of good reviews and I've been completely satisfied with it.

The only downside is that it's monochrome (color lasers were out of our price range) but we're really not missing color at all.

    Dawn,
That is what I want! I want to carelessly print. The only plus about mine is it is an all in one. I love that part, but hate the price I pay in ink.

    Pam,
Are your cartridges the refillable ones? Or do you do the drill trick? I have been trying the drill trick thing, because your not suppose to refill the lexmark ones I have. It is a mess!!!! I cannot figure out how to get it to not drip out of the bottom. So, by the time I am done I have black fingers for days. LOL

I don't think mine are technically refillable. I have an HP all-in-one. I have to poke a hole in the top to inject more ink, but I can refill many times before having to invest in a new cartridge.

The DCP 7020 is an all-in-one too and does much better quality scans then I ever got with my Lexmark.

Update. Dh got home from work today. (yeah, I hate the weeks he is gone) I told him about the difference and why I needed one and as soon as I told him I could get like 2000+ prints with one toner, he told me when we get caught up w/in the next few months I can get one. Yeah!!! I knew if I told him it would save me money by spending a little more, he would give in. LOL
Now I am off to research and find the one I want, since they are so expensive I better do my research well. Hopefully then I won't have to replace it for a while.
