Do you go by the normal, done in may/june, back in august or do you go right on through summer? This year i was going to do a little during the summer...we go camping so much i thought those would be our off weeks, but other than that keep up a light, but still some kind of work load. What do you do?

We started this year in late July/early August and should "finish" by the end of May. This is not what the ps here in VA do but more the schedule of the kids old Dept of Defense school. We did do some "lite" school in the summer but mostly spent time de-schooling. Schools here in VA run Sept to mid-June.

I plan to have the kids do math and reading at least a few days each week most of the summer just to keep their skills up.....I remember being annoyed myself to have to start over in math every school year so hoping we can avoid some of that (review is good...but too much kills my kids enthusiasm).

We'll be going all the way through, but summers will be more for hitting the 'lighter' subjects and reviewing the core subjects. So, summers are a bit easier-going.

This year we're going all the way through. I'll let you know if that was a good idea or not in September. LOL

I have tried in the past to go through the summer, and found it simply does NOT work for me! My goal was to do a little in the mornings, and then spend the afternoon doing Phys Ed (ie: at the pool!). But then, the kids go to camp for two separate weeks, they go with my parents for a week, we might go on vacation, etc. And when we WERE home, all kinds of things kept interfering. So we now follow the school year, but I reserve the right to have them do some writing/math/history/whatever off and on.

For sd we go until she finishes the work for the year (she is in high school). I do not plan anything additional except reading since she normally goes down to her mom's for a few weeks. When we start with dd I plan on doing at least a little but nothing too structured. I will probably do a lot of science over the summer and then a few things here and there.

This is our first year so I have no past experience to go by, but I am planning to continue schooling through the summer. I like the idea of being able to take days and weeks off whenever I want or need to instead of scheduling long periods off.

We are planning this year to go by the school year August to May but ds is only in K. The only exception to this is that we plan to continue his phonics/reading instruction year round as this is such a vital skill we feel he should practice year round.

There is no possible way we could school during the summer. My oldest is Miss Social Butterfly and most of her friends are either in public or private schools with summers off.

She goes to two summer camps and will possibly be flying to Nebraska with her best friend and staying with the friend's grandparents for a week, plus we will be taking about a 10 day vacation. We also go to the pool at least 3 times a week.

The only thing schoolish she will do is read.

We begin our school year the day after Labor Day and end sometime in mid May. Last year she was finished by the first weekend in May. This year it looks like May 16th will be our last official day.

We plan on doing something fun as a celebration of finishing the year. Last year we went to the Kemah Boardwalk. This year we will either do the same or spend the day at the beach. Whatever we do will be a surprise!

We take the majority of the summer off. I enjoy the time off and so does Ems. We do cover a little bit of work here and there but not much.

We do a light work load in the summer. I dont want my kids forgetting things. I have a hard enough time starting school up after spring break let alone after an entire summer of being off.

We normally take summers off. I may do some reviews and some fun outdoor learning stuff but that is about it. I am thinking of doing a unit study this summer.

We school every month except July. This allows us to take a week here and there when we want to.

We haven't officially started yet, but I am planning on doing a light load through the summer. Like previous posters, I like the idea of being able to take longer vacations when other kids are in school. If that means taking our schooling into the summer a bit, then I think it is worth it!

we did some school last summer and will do a full schedule after a 3 week break in june. That is because we are moving in dec and we will be taking a month or so off.

I'm planning on schooling through the summer but nothing heavy. Just mostly Math, spelling, and reading for my 4th and 5th graders and math reading, and phonics for my 2nd grader. We haven't officially started spelling with her yet but we will next year since she is JUST now getting used to her phonics and her reading has finally taken off. That was the most important thing for us to work on this year. Now I think she is at a 2nd grade reading level. So we've come a LONG way and I don't want her to loose what she's worked so hard to learn. But we will still have a fun summer with a short break every month.

I will be schooling into the summer and will be taking Jan., Feb., or Mar. off. At least 2 months during that time. Hubby will be coming home and schooling will be far from our mind.

I feel like I didn't do enough science this year, so I thought we could make it fun and do it through the summer- I give them a little math here and there to stay fresh, and they love to read, draw, write, etc on their own, so I won't do much if any of that. The boys have each found some day camps they want to do, and we love to play outside in the summer- we live in the mountains near rivers, trails and lakes, so we take full advantage- and we like to spend time with our ps friends.

we take some time off in the summer just to be us. But, it gets so ding donging hot down here we start up earlier then normal as it's to hot to do anything outside, then we take more time off in the winter to enjoy the time outside.
